Death Cab for Cutie – Meet Me on the Equinox Lyrics 16 years ago
Not my favourite Death Cab song - which in itself is odd as several of those poetic/lyrical masterpieces jostle for top place. The lyrics here seem a bit more clumsy than vulnerable.

I personally can't stand the Twilight Saga and was a little surprised on hearing that one of my favourite bands (seriously, check them out live - totally worth the £17) were doing the song for the latest "film". Still, preferring to keep an open mind I've listened to the song several times now as the focus of the lyrics is not the movie per se. Apparently the band were "treated" to an extended showing of the sequel - which might explain why the song sounds a bit like a last minute project.

The lyrics might have worked with a different tune/tempo. That's what's annoying me. Gibbard has mentioned that the song is about compromise in a relationship and how it can save it and destroy it. Equinox describes the half-way points between December and summer and summer and December. These half-way points are natural and so are those in our interactions with each other. So, this song does have a lot to offer for the poet, naturalist and philosopher alike. Sadly the execution has been too much like the theme - compromised and a bit half way.

Lostprophets – Sway Lyrics 16 years ago
I really like the instrumental at the end.
The song seems to describe the thoughts of a moment. Possibly the first with any clarity for a long time and it's the stillness of the scene/view and the wordless sounds of the world that are providing the backing track. It seems to reiterate what has been sung and the importance of realising that life has changed irrevoracbly and whilst its unsettling; eerie and maybe downright painful, (it's not unwise to think that way) don't forget to see it for what it is. Also there's beauty all around you to remind you just in case you (and we all do) forget.
Does that even make sense?

The Killers – Goodnight, Travel Well Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great equilising song. Everybody dies and everybody will know people who have died/will die. This song is so wrought with pain and grief and as some one who has lost friends and family it's especially moving. In particular it seems to be somebody who was a role model and looked to for inspiration -
'Every word you spoke, and everything you said
Everything you left me, rambles in my head'
In the end all we're left with are unanswerable questions and memories to sift through. That's my garbled interpretation anyway.

Linkin Park – New Divide Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of those songs that reminds me of why i love this band: written maybe with one purpose but with as many different interpretations as there are listeners. To me there's something very finalistic about this song 'Fate had finally found me' the dramatic back drop 'lightning all around me' and strange/broken dialogue make it sound like the very last fight/argument between 2 sides. That argument that both sides know theres no return from. Yet for all the storm raging outside your so caught up in what's dying (any kind of relationship, an era etc), that you don't notice. You wish you could forget that the relationship had never happened for all the damage/guilt done to both sides 'wash this memory clean'.
Havent seen the film yet but will definately do so after hearing this. A good soundtrack is always worth it.

Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 17 years ago
A tremendous song and very moving.
I think this is to do with the war in Iraq and the MASSIVE protests that went prior to it and the protests that were totally ignored, patronised and condemned by our governments (the carnival of idiots on show) who didn't seem to realise the position that taking us to war would put us in in the long term - or they just wouldnt admitt it. They also justified themselves on an untruthful basis (a carnival) It seemed like everyone was taking whatever the American newscasters (the Fox that became god) where told to say as fact. Also the soldiers being sent to a war they didn't believe in and again the Govt gives support to the soldiers for a war they themselves would never fight in or send they're kids to fight in ("if you love me why'd you let me go?") There's a lot of anger in the song and it fits the theme and the lyrics beautifully.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
This could apply to many a fallen ruler but i'm going to be brave and go for specifics. To me this song is a reference to Tony Blair and his decline in popularity/power. He started as a charismatic leader, capable of debating the hell out of anyone in the Commons and he was cheered in after the Conservative Governement (the old king) was voted out in 1997 after they had been in for around 17 years (i forget the exact number). But as soon as 9/11 came and he took the uk to war, that changed. The song on the album is followed by Violet Hill which seems to chart the whole sham which was the creation and is the mutation of the war in Iraq. The Catholic references could be to do with Blair himself being a Catholic although considering this to be non-profitable during his tenure. In the last years of Blair's Labour Government there was a lot of dissent within his own party and from the people who'd pushed him to power before as well as distrust (never an honest word) and annoyence from the British Public as well as various extremist groups he had managed to piss off because of Iraq and Afghanistan("Revelutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate). i may be wrong but the whole pattern of the song seems to fit with the history of the Blair's Govt here in Britain.
It could seem so dull (although it's quite pivotal) but i love the way that Viva la Vida makes it sound legendary and like something you'd see on a Napoleonic canvas. It's ingenious.

Alanis Morissette – Bent 4 U Lyrics 19 years ago
Under an illusion that looks like love but with hindsight, clearly isnt. You've tried everything to please this guy even changing the things that make you undeniably and unescapably you, heaven only knows how much and who you've lost as a result and suddenly the paralysis has lifted and you've had enough and are "done".

Alanis Morissette – Sister Blister Lyrics 19 years ago
In answer to the message of this song: AMEN TO THAT! The way I look at it its about the crime its is to "disavow a sister", how women have had to fight tooth and nail to get where we are and still have ground that is untaken and yet we waste our time sabotaging each other by backstabbing, slandering and competing over men. This song is definatly stirring and one worth A LOT of discussion and worht using in discussion.

Alanis Morissette – Sorry To Myself Lyrics 19 years ago
This is one of those songs where i had to fight back that little lump in my throat when something hits a spot that i'm not quite comfortable with looking at yet if that makes sense. Its beautiful and i reckon that every woman should step out of that comfy zone and listen to it. We do give ourselves so much crap it is ridiculous. it fits well with sister blister too. how we also give each other loadsa crap and that is also quite absurd.

Keane – Try Again Lyrics 19 years ago
"Lay down your arms and i will lay down mine, rip back the time we've been wasting"
Resonates with a lot of people. maybe 2 friends, both too similar and both have tried at being lovers? Maybe the friendship is what is needed more here "God i wish you could see me now, you'd pick me up and you'd sort me out" - sounds like something a tough friend would do. However - the idea of an addiction (whether substance relatd or just habituality (is that a word?)) does add another dimension the song. Thanks mojo_pin1 :-).

Keane – The Frog Prince Lyrics 19 years ago
One of the things i really love about this album is the reference to various fairy tales in various songs and via various lyrics. Its refreshing to see inspiration being drawn from other sources. I loved this song the from the first notes in the intro. It really works well and the lyrics are stunning.
Its a warning and a story in one. Kinda like a warning to a close friend who has unwittingly morphed into something that maybe only you as their friend can still recognise and see right through the new disguise and although you dislike what they've become you care about them far too much not to warn them but its easier to do it via metaphor. There are notes of what too much power will do to someone and that the only way to reverse its effects is to "let go brother, let go."

3 Doors Down – Kryptonite Lyrics 20 years ago
Have you ever been the strong one? Or felt like you had to be then had your suspicions justified? Well thats fine. Have you ever wondered what would happen between you and a person who sees you as the strong one and feeds of that strength if that person saw you at your weakest? What if your weakness was to do with all ways having to walk tall for someone? Its concerning you so you take a wander "i took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind" but the wander hasnt helped and your still worried about the issue of you being someones superman and fearing that the someones going to bolt as soon as they see you crack and break. By the way, I love this song. Its one of those that you can jot down in a boring lecture and it then seems less boring. Probably just me :o)

Radiohead – Talk Show Host Lyrics 20 years ago
this song is amazing. I was 12 going on 13 when i first heard it as part of the Romeo + Juliet masterpiece. It was my introduction to Radiohead and non-pop (just in time too. Not to discount an entire genre. that brasses me off). At 12/13 I was a high school social outcast. So yeh i get it. You're desperate to be someone else. Not the little loser rumaging through her naff bag to find her packed lunch. It was the first time i'd heard/payed attention to a song that (be it by the music or the words), resonated with where i was beneathe my skin. Uncomfortable, angry and in desperation. Also, it got me interested/slightly obsessed actually with good lyrics in music.

Crowded House – Together Alone Lyrics 20 years ago
Beautiful. Makes me cry. A lot. Love the use of vocals here. It really makes oyur spine tingle. There's something very tragically reassuring about this song. Anyone got any ideas as to where it comes from? Only recently (as in last summer) started listening to crowded house and love their music. Together Alone ia an amazing album.

I love this song. Its just right. Soothing and disquieting at the same time. Everytime I listen to it I get the feeling that I've missed something important, either in the song, in my own life, or with regard to the world in general. Its a very inspiring and definatly one of my favourite tracks.

Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm liking this song. Its a bit to close at some points though. See, I'm going to uni in September (A-level results dependent) and leaving my life for the last 12 years behind. Its quite scary and its quite painful actually. So yeh, I get the "drenched in my pain" line. You waste so much time wishing that you were somewhere else and grown up. Then, its suddenly dawns on you, you've grown up, your about to be somewhere else and nothings gonna be the same. You know too much, you've seen too much and you forgot to even say goodbye. Its a widely effective song (if you get my point).

Placebo – Daddy Cool (Boney M. cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
They put this song in the toyota advert. Damn adverts! I like it, I like that its crazy and mentions crazyness (ala moi...).It could be kinda wierd though considering the "she's crazy about her daddy, oh she believes in him..." lyric. Still, good tune and I like it.

Placebo – The Bitter End Lyrics 20 years ago
I guess I knew that this relationship wasn't going to end all rosey. We're going nowhere now neither of us would feel a thing if it was ended, or would we? we've argued too much, said too much and seen too much. However "anesthetised" we feel now, the end will still be bitter. Yet we'll still be seeing each other. I love this song!

Linkin Park – Crawling Lyrics 20 years ago
I would just like to say that a band whose lyrics, for me at any rate, have helped me to momentarily vocalise the hell that supposed "friends" and even my so-called best friend put me through for at least five years of my life at primary (thats kindergarden, or first school) and the main years of my "life" at high school, is at least worthy of some recognition for doing the same for countless others who have been through the same or worse. To denounce an entire genre of music shows not only narrow mindedness but apparant ignorance and possible sheer arrogance. This is coming from a little British lass who loves some (by no means all) nu-metal, ADORES indy and actively salutes and pays homage to the original rockers that brought my generation the beautiful evolutiionaryu story that has become the rock genre. I love Guns N Roses with a passion (raised on that music!). But any respect and love of such artists amounts to nothing if the offspring of their ingenuity and genious is either ignored and/or degraded by low level insults and (as previously mentioned) sheer (possibly fearful) arrogance. I agree with Tyran's rant at RichardLG's bad spelling after his comments at listeners and enjoyers of nu-=metal being stupid. They cant all be "Dumb Americans". Why? I like some of it (as said not all), and I'm British, from Northamptonshire (not London not every British person lives there funnily enough) and value open mindedness and humility. Oh, and OldskoolrockerJTS (appropriate name btw), how in that list of apparant greats (metallica just want money, havent you noticed that yet?listen to their original views on mp3s), how did you forget the giants that were Queen, Pink Floyd, the Clash and that are the likes of U2?? See no obsenities. None. Not one and as good a spelling as I could manage. Am I still stupid?

Keane – On a Day Like Today Lyrics 20 years ago
Its when your with somone you've known for years, a best mate,or family member for example. You know you keep screwing and they know it and its that moment when you look at the person and know they know. You want to tell them whats going on and you know you need to but you "cant find the words to say"and you "don't why" because you know you NEED to tell them or a great relationship will be lost. A now-or-never type moment. The frustration and longing are in the lyrics, the vocals (so beautiful!) and the music itself. I adore that instrumental. My favourite song on the album and (in my opinion) the best.
