Wow, just wow. This song is so beautiful. Elliott must have had a real gift, to be able to write a song like this that expresses completely raw emotion. Its like so complex yet there is so much simplicity. The harmonies in his voice and the music just puts this song over the top. Elliott was an amazing songwriter and he will always be so missed. |

this is in reference to A Lack Of Color's comment earlier on the line "all you can do now is watch the shells" meaning gunshells. i dont think its talking about gunshells, but literally talking about watching shells. I think because of the next line, "the game looks easy, thats why it sells" Elliott is talking about a game of chance in which an object is placed under 1 of 3 shells that are then shifted around and the player must then guess which shell the object is under. The lines are very straight forward, this game looks very easy so people buy into it, but dont realize it takes a lot of concenrration in watching the shells. Im not fully sure what this is a metaphor for but probably in relations to the context of the song may be talking about buying into the music industry and big record labels. |

| i agree with Stuffclq, i think he was using son of sam as more of a concept then accually telling the story of son of sam in the song. talking about failing in most relationships in his life. and in the line "son of sam, son of a shining path, the clouded mind" it also kinda seems like elliott is relating to son of sam's state of mind by saying the clouded mind. mmm like many of elliott's song a beautiful melody complimented by very twisted lyrics | |

i love the lines: "A little less than a human being A little less than a happy high A little less than a suicide" i agree with what was said earlier about how nobody really appriciates how human elliott really was. im not really sure if this is what the first two lines meant at all but the way i interpret it is from personal expeiriecne. i think it relates to have really big ups and really big downs, like never just being content. also when it says "a little less then a happy high" is chilling for me to hear, because its so sentimental. in the way that even when being high your still never genuinly happy, which proves to be so much more depressing. but im probably way off here. gives me chills everytime i hear it. |
