i agree with all of the other comments on the song. that is what the song is pretty much about. but i also like to take it in lieu of my own situations. this song reminds me of a boy a dated. we ended up breaking up on good terms because we thought it was for the best. and i know i have to let him go (and i want to) but sometimes when you seem him you just kinda of...melt...and it's contradticting. you know you have to forget them, but there's a deeper part of you that wants them still. holy shit. this song is beautiful. this song can be taken two ways: literally or metaphorically. literally... just read the lyrics. it's self explainatory. metaphorically, this song is about a person leaving someone, and that someone doesn't really want them to go. though they realize it's just not going to work out, one just wants to see that they were worth something, and that what they had actually was worth their time. hence the name of the song, "settle for a slowdown". just amazing. i can relate. the best way i can explain this though is through personal experiance. i dated this amazing boy, but we broke up for reasons. and we're still pretty good friends. well he already has a new girlfriend and seems to be forgetting about me, and though i miss him, i'm not asking him to come back... i just want to see him have some type of nostalgia for the thought of us, or to know that i was important. |

i've been a Coretta Scott fan since they were passing out hand-made flyers at shows in the basement of the STA station. *laughs* they are getting so popular, i love my hometown boys. this is my all-time favorite song of theirs. and i don't know what you guys are saying about not being able to find it's meaning... you just need to look at it in basic form. this is about "the scene" (emo friends and loves) that happen as your growing up. the poison apple and self medication parts are about drugs for sure... the "my sons no faggot" verse is about emo boys and their friends (cause the kiss and wear tight pants and shit) the "my daughter's no slut" part is about the girls in the scene giving away their love and bodies... then caputeing the reputation of slut. most of the song is about ignoring all those problems, though. and about growing up as a teenager. when seth preformed this live at his last show *tear*... it was the most beautiful thing EVER. they give great hugs*heart* loving you. |

i heard this song and fell in love. i was already a huge fan for fftl's 1st album and ep. then i heard this. it sounds nothing like them.. and yet it's so incredible. this song is so sad. sonny put so much emotion into this, it almost hurts just listening to it. quite a few of fftl's songs are about vanity... Waltz Moore, Failure by Designer Jeans, parts of Dead Baby Kickball... and when their so depressing like this (and he is THAT amazing)... it makes me wonder if there's any hope for people like me. |

hmmm *holds out flat palms and weighs which song meaning is closer to being right* girlfriend breakup, or band breakup. thats a toughy. i have arguments to contradict each answer though. at first, you think of girlfriends.. cause thats what you'd just assume from a band. but then you think about the bands break up and metaphors that fit the lost singer. then you read the "better off alone then i would be in your arms" and think, "oh, for sure a gf break up".... but then also.. you see pics of sonny kissing other GUYS and stuff, so it could still be the old singer.... and then you read about the lamp being thrown through the window, and you say "what the fuck..." my opnion in to make your own opnion. your song meaning may be diffrent from others, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. even though the band wrote it about a paticullar thing/person... apply it to your own life. it makes the song a WHOLE LOT more interseting... not that it's not already... it will just mean more to you. i know, that was cheesy, lame, and probably something you won't listen to, but hey, everyone intitled to their own opnion, right? |

hmmm. this song didn't catch my interest the first time i listened to it... but i don't think i listened close enough. i'm still trying to decipher the meaning... but a hint for all of you still confused... look at the pages in the cd booklet. every lyric has a picture to go with it relating to the song in some way. they are kinda hard to figure out at first... but here's and example. on the *Hard To Say* page, it has this man with ear-muffs on and band-aids across his mouth with another mouth bursting out his scull... sorta looks like its scearming. well this could be the fact that he wants to tell "someone" how he really feels, but he can't and it's all building up pressure in his mind until he can't take it anymore (the mouth bursting out) and he's trying to avoid what people tell him (ear-muffs) and everything he ISN'T saying/telling is really hurting everyone... and he's trying to make it better (healing wounds with band-aids). well, on the *A Light With A Sharpened Edge* page, there's a row of men lined up with these awkward looking masks/disguises on their heads. looking at this could mean that he's trying to break away from that crowd and be himself once again or for the first time, wether that be from his old habits or his religion or anything else you may come up with. i know it's kinda a stretch... but i thought it was worth looking into.
