I dont think this song is about drugs. I think this song is not being arsed with society. The whole song is pointing towards dropping out of modern life, dont follow the tv, dont give a shit. He sings that every day he wakes up and feels down because he just wants to be trapped in himself but he know he cant so he has nothing to lose. |

These lyrics are wrong. It's "turn OFF and drop out as one", turn ON makes a massive amount of no sense at all. Did i mention that this song kicks ass? I was dragged to a shitty nightclub last night and i could get the way Phil sings "I hit the BOWence" outa my head. What a singer. |

Well here's what this beautiful song is to me:
It's a guy whos very depressed and alone, thinking the best of his life has past. from the start he's dreaming about killing himself. And it gets to the end and he finds himself happier in death, nothing to fear and doubt.
I find it such a depressing song, it's beautiful.
Thats just how i take it.

You could take this song literally, "Jail". Someone in the family has been murdered "our lives capsized" - lots of people affected. "One man gives back" - injustice. "Why don't you kneel before me?" - wants revenge. At the end he says "one day you'll find me in the corner more sublime, but still i never died before." Perhaps saying that he;s sure he'll understand the justice one day, but he didnt have to die. Just a theory. Beautiful song. |

Hey, well...firstly i prefer the version off "live on two legs" by a good way, the emotion is pouring off him, i really aint that fond of the album version. I use it about a friend of mine who has been really ill for months and im the only guy left for him. he's my best friend and i use this as looking at him slipping in and out of depression, coming and going from the old him to the new him. damnit eddie vedder is fantastic. |

Yo, well to me...well... i got a friend. he's like totally ill. not been able to leave his house for 11 months, he has lost contact with everyone else apart from me, he's my best friend, known him since i was 5 and noone knows what's wrong with him. He's seriously depressed and refuses now to see and cure that isnt 100% as a failure. They think its probably a psychological problem causing it. Id like to play him this song. Fits well. See also "Off he goes" for similar thoughts. Dunno why i decided to tell u all this but, mah, this song is my voice. |

No-one has commented on this song? Has to be my favourite song of all time, no other like it.
To me it's about a guy who, through unfortunate circumstances and an addiction he has lost everything he once had and can no longer really see the point of life.
The first 2 verses are just a guy who sees everything as the same, he no longer sees any new joy in life and he knows it will be almost impossible to find his love again, who he still has fond memories of (verse 3). The fourth verse is about him falling prey to his addiction again and the 5th about his 1st experiance that led to it. The 6th is soon after with him recovering from his latest "hit" and commenting on how dealers must have hard hearts to allow people to ruin their life as he has done. The final verse (expressed beautifully with the desperation in his voice but typed wrong here, its overturn tables, disconnect cables) is him having lost any will to live and noy knowing what the point of life is anymore.
Fav song ever...love it. So much desperation. Gotta love that Bob. |

To me this song is about a guy who is sick of modern comercialism but doesn't have the will to fight it. So "I just question, our modern needs" is him saying how he doesn't see why people have to buy all the modern fashionable contraptions we're told to and "I will walk with my hands bound...with my shadow flag into your garden, garden of stone" refers to how he doesn't have the will to fight it, having little self-control, so he will venture into this place which maskerades as beauty but is false and cold as stone. Well, at least that's how i read it. |
