| Greg Graffin – Talk About Suffering Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| greg graffin didn't write this song. It is an old tune written by doc watsons(if i am correct) and recorded first many years ago. If he had written this song i think he would have written it a more satirical style and it would not feel sincerely written. Now what buisness greg has covering it is his own, but i'm clueless myself | |

u guys are all retarted!!!!! except for the guy who posted b4 me he was quite wise in his retrospect... i think it is talking about how we go overboard trying to relieve pain and we are allways looking for another way to get better. to be at peace and be fine with yourself and the way u are would be wrong. a lot of people always think they need something more like a drug or money or some might even think that it is love that they "need" to keep going. at the end he says he heart fails everytime and so maybe all this stuff that we are doing just makes it worse or doesnt help and we just need to learn to be content |

i know many of u have already posted on the relationof this song to the bible verse in Proverbs 9. i have something to add that i didnt notice in anyone elses evaluation. so far most of you only post where says "stolen water is sweet" because it is in the song. Dustin relates even more to the passage if u look back a few verses... "13 The woman Folly is loud; she is undisciplined and without knowledge. 14 She sits at the door(and she calls from the doorway, stolen water is sweet) of her house, on a seat at the highest point in the city, 15 calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way.16 "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgement. 17 "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret(lets drink it in the darkness) is delicious!" 18 But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave. I take it that this woman(folly) is sin. The narrator is struggling with sin and knows its wrong but finds it so appealing "i know its nothing but lies, but they sound so sincere; i find them too hard to hate." Now this leaves the question of who this woman opposing her is. I think that Dustin is still refering to the scripture passage.( the first part rather, still chapter 9) "1 Wisdom(the other woman)has built her house; she has hewn out its seven pillars. 2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her maids, and she calls from the highest point in the city(and you! my true love. you call from the hilltop). 4 "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgement. 5 "Come eat my food and drink the wine i have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways to live;walk in the way of understanding. Just as the other woman was Folly and did not have wisdom...this woman IS wisdom. she is telling everyone to eat her food(become wise) and realize that sin keeps pulling at us until eventually it will take us down "and I’m almost sure that I've been here before, that this is not the first time I’ve stood in front of this door, with an overwhelming feeling that i shouldn’t go in, but it seems this is a battle that i never could win." Near the end he sees what he has done and asks "What have i done? is it too save me from this place? from the "depths of this grave"(refer to vs 18) before closing i would like to say i think its very intresting how these very message boards reflect the conflict of Thrice and the title of "Christian Band" While these boards are made for us to discuss the meaning of the song. many of them seem to get carried away into arguements over whether or not the lyrics are refering to christianity or a simple social condition. sides are taken of those who believe in god and have a faith and those who do not have faith or do not think that these songs reflect messages with christianity. but each sides dont seem to move eachother as they are stubborn to learn from a "nonbeliever" or a "christian" do u notice the resemblence? if thrice claimed to be a christian band. out of many peoples stubborness they would, sadly, not be as recognized. but by stating no faith they can still write about what they want and there is no bias towards or agaisnt them. so if we all just made our points without having to state what we believe ourselves , and at the same time took what everyone has to say into account then this messageboard would be more helpful to everyone. but if u are looking for what i think the overall meaning of the song is. i think that Dustin is making an illustration to Proverbs 9 and showing that sin is somehting that pulls people in even tho we can tell it is wrong. people are even shouting to us not to sin, but we indulge in it none the less. until finally we are trapped and "buried" with sin and we cant get out. this is my first post on this sight and i really hope that after reading what i just said, it doesnt make u think differently about this post. Thrice is an incredible talented band, both musically and in the messages of thier songs. - monkyinatree90 |
