interesting ideas darth, i quite agree!!! i think the song is beautiful too.. unexpectedly so considering the subject matter... it's not the most glamorous of topics is it? but damon just has a magical way with words, he really does. i can get into the mood of this song so easily.. what a fantastic writer. "good morning lethargy" indeed! ps. i think the annie hall line is so sweet :) |

well... i hope nobody gives me any funny looks for this one, but i think this really sounds like a song about an abusive man!! i know that sounds odd.. it seems like damon doesn't write about these topics blatantly and in that sort of self-pitying "woe is my lot" way... i think this is an attempt, though, at tackling something serious. -he's hitting his head against the wall... he'd do it to you, he'd do it to me?? and the chorus could be the receiver of the abuse telling a friend that he doesn't need sympathy or help because he knows there's a world beyond that relationship, or home... i really didn't mean to be a captain bring-down, but i do think it's a reasonable idea! :) |

hahaha... okay i know this is really mean, but, what if it was about his younger brother who also used to be in a band? WOW... everyone has much more eomplex and impressive answers that what i came up with... ... i always thought it was a perfect description of a narcissist or some other type of manipulating jerk. (because of the wedding reference i always pictured it as one of his girlfriend\'s relatives but really it doesn\'t matter lol)... especially the parts about the person \"stay[ing] frozen to the spot\" and \"the pot will call the kettle black\"... just reminds me so well of a mean-spirited but ultimately cowardly person.. like a \"bully\", as thom says.. once you really stand up to them they don\'t know what to do. just my interpretation though, i like everyone else\'s as well |

i agree with that idea, lisalynn. makes the most sense to me, i mean he mentions "charlie" after all. (but i don't want to sound presumptious with that, because who really knows what his songs are about except elliott??) really sad song, anyways.. i really get that feeling of frustration listening to it.. the feeling of being stuck in a bad relationship, having to listen to someone's inane, pompous ramblings.. just my interpretation though! :) |

dorareever, i like your interpretation, i don't think it's bullshit at all :) the bridge part very much strikes me personally as something about suicide. the rest of it, in my opinion, is about a harmful relationship(s) and how he desires to break away from it... "a bad connection that only goes one way". and the "sick exchange" that "struck him as wrong" could refer to any type of unhealthy dynamic between people.. but yeah, concerning the upbeat nature of it, and the happy way that he sings about "division day", it seems like the person in this song has been able to separate himself from the past and the person/people.. "...moved him along closer to divison day". love this song.. it's liberating |

just an idea, but it could be about a parental figure? i won't assume it's his stepfather, because who knows.. don't mean to overuse that idea, but it seems like a lot of his songs do have something to do with this apparently heinous charlie guy... my interpretation: he doesn't want to be "bossed around" by someone who he does not respect or accept as an authority figure.. he's an inconsistent parent that "blink[s] on and off"? this also fits with the handshake part.. he despises the smarmy parental attitude that his stepfather is doing things all "for his own good".. he sees it as fake and even malicious. i do agree that the alcohol reference is probably quite correct.. could be symbolic for any way of numbing out the painful relationship, but due to the whisky reference.. probably booze. just my take though! nobody kill me, please.. |
