I think the answer lies in the chorus. "Break! Away from everybody Break! Away from everything If you can't stand the way this place is Take, yourself to higher places" I think it is about breaking the mold. What is that mold, you might ask? I think that mold is the stereotypical rock n roll mold that most bands fit themselves into. The whole black and white with skulls charade if you will. Even after watching the video, looking at their album art, they are definitely breaking this "mold." The addition of pinks and purples is a visual representation of this message, to break away from stereotypes and carbon copy molds that society makes for you. For you to break away from it all and to do what you want to do. That is what I think this song embodies. Basically the summary of the chorus is "Be yourself. If you don't like who we are, you can go **** off." The line of "start the fire" is a Billy Joel reference - To start the fire, to start something contagious, to break away from old trends and start anew. |

I feel if you aren't a true LP fan, hell, even a music fan (or someone that can appreciate good music) then you probably won't like this album. A lot of people can't accept change, especially when the product has been great for nearly eight years now. Minutes To Midnight is Linkin Park showcasing their ability to grow out of the shell they've encased themselves in the day the Hybrid Theory EP came out. MTM is a more mature sound for LP (and I don't mean that because this is the first album they wrote with any profanity in it). With Given Up, it's this new-energy that opens the album...and I love it. The clinking keys, the clapping, the solos, it's something you wouldn't expect from a Linkin Park album. That's what makes it so great. Because it's still the same guys, but they have evolved their music to a much higher level. |
