| Randy Newman – Rednecks [Version] Lyrics
| 8 years ago

This one is brutal. It's hard for me to listen to because of the repeated instances of the n-word, and it's got even more of that trademark Randy Newman sarcasm than most of his songs. It starts out as a parody of Southern "redneck" white people who are proud of their racism, but then points out that even in the North, racism is alive and well, especially in our biased "justice" system that incarcerates black people at five times the rate of whites.
Lester Maddox was the segregationist governor of Georgia in the late 60s. He owned a restaurant where he refused to serve black people. He was seen as an "old country boy" who had never held elected office before becoming governor with the support of the KKK. |

Replying to myself to say more about the Cuba part: Maybe Pitbull is dropping the endings of the words here, and it's really "En Cuba las cosas estan duras" = "in Cuba, things are hard," meaning it's a hard place to live, but also probably still talking about his dick. |

These lyrics are much better than RapGenius's, which doesn't even have the Spanish parts transcribed.
For people who want translations of the Spanish parts:
"En cuba la cosa esta dura" = "In Cuba, the thing is hard" (Is this just talking about his dick, or does it have some other meaning?)
"En L.A. tengo la Mexicana, en New York tengo la boricua" = "In L.A. I have the Mexican girls, in New York I have the Puerto Rican girls"
"Besitos para todas las mujeres en Venezuela" = "Kisses for all the women in Venezuela"
"Y en Miami tengo cualquiera" = "In Miami I can have whatever (women) I want" |

It's "Carti at the wrist" apparently, as in a Cartier watch, not "cardiac wrist." |

I know this song is really about God and stuff, but to me it will always be about Doctor Who Series 5, specifically Amy's relationship with Rory. She doesn't want to exist in a world without him ("Amy's Choice"), "if you're not really here, then I don't want to be, either." Later, she lives in a world without stars ("The Big Bang"), and she's the only one that believes in them. The whole season is about how belief, memory, and love can keep a world alive, can keep a person alive, can even bring them back to life, and Amy and Rory's relationship is the backbone of that. If I knew how to vid, I'd make a vid about it, set to this song. |

Man, I don't even care about the moral issue, because this song is sexy as hell. |

I assumed it was that many days since she found out he was cheating on her, or since their relationship started being not as good as it was. |

huh. I never looked at the lyrics before. I guess this is about the things people hide about themselves in order to get into a relationship, and the dreams they put aside because they don't think the other person will share or understand them. |

This song is so sweet. "Paint it Black" of course is by the Rolling Stones. I can imagine the boy and his girl listening to the song and discussing how meaningful it is. But not on this website. Heh. |

To me this song is about people coming together in extreme situations. Even people who aren't normally considered "shy" can get scared of approaching people they like. But during a time of crisis (like the threat of war), it can be great to just say "I've got nothing to lose" and do the thing that you've been wanting to do all along. This is my favorite Smiths song. |

My favorite Iron & Wine song. To me it conveys a sense of profound joy and love that comes out of the knowledge of death and impermanence. Life and love seem more precious when you know that they will eventually be gone and only memories will be left. |

This is actually my least favorite I&W song. It seems a bit sappy and comes too close to cliche for me. The verses are fine, but the chorus makes me shudder with how saccharine it is. |

This was the first FF song I heard too, and I fell in love. It was the single version, the one with the verse at the end where half of it is played backwards. I have this dream that someday I'll be able to play those parts forward and figure out what the verse says. Then my life will be complete. |

I agree that it's "devils of fame," not "devils of faith," and I also think it's "musical graves" not "musical grace." And Emmylou rocks. |
