Drive-By Truckers – Zip City Lyrics 19 years ago
Driving somewhere and you're not really even sure why; that in a nutshell is what being young in America is all about. It's easier than dealing with the boredom. That last line, I ain't got no good intentions, is a killer. Why is this not the biggest band in the world?

Laura Nyro – Wedding Bell Blues Lyrics 20 years ago
Like a lot of Laura's songs, this one is really about womanhood in a way that I can't comment. But musically its one of the most fantastic compositions that a human being has ever created. It's immediately infectious, but at the same time you can hear it over and over again and it doesn't get old. Laura is one of a kind, she had a beautiful voice, a eclectic if not eccentric taste in lyrics, and most importantly a sense of melody that far belied her years. She wrote this song when she was 19. What did you do when you were 19. I got drunk in the basement. Most of us probably did the same. Laura wrote some of the most beautifully recorded songs we're ever likely to here. Let's thank her for that.

Patsy Cline – Crazy Lyrics 20 years ago
A real knockout of a song. Willie Nelson wrote it, but her performance is really what breathes life into the song. A spectacular example of an American song that becomes so iconic that vitually everyone can sing along with it, even if they don't know who sang it. It transcends genres and generations like only the best songs will. Its every bit as timeless as "Hey Jude".

Whiskeytown – Under Your Breath Lyrics 20 years ago
Like most Whiskeytown songs, its about a doomed relationship. The singer knows its going to end and things have gotton strange with their lover. Really, its saying that sometimes its easier to hear nothing at all than face reality.

Whiskeytown – Bar Lights Lyrics 20 years ago
Desperate. Anyone who has ever hit on a girl in some bar with hopes like stars in their eyes of going home with her knows what this song is about. My guess is she never answered his call. "Call me up on Sunday, it won't be anything" pretty much sums it all up.

Lucinda Williams – Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about the Replacements, an unbelievably good band from Minneapolis in the mid-eighties, and their singer, Paul Westerberg. The lines "You've got a sense of humor/you're a mystery/I heard a rumor/you're making history" not only evokes the style of lyricism the Replacements used, but comments on them in a way that could only be appreciated after their demise.

Yazoo – Only You Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is prominently featured in the finale of the British television show "The Office". There are only two seasons and one 90 minute special, I'd encourage everyone to watch it. It brings more significance to this song than Yaz ever could.

Uncle Tupelo – Chickamauga Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about a civil war battle, at chickamauga, thought by some to be the bloodiest of the war. Jay Farrar probably wrote it after reading a story by Ambrose Bierce about the battle, of the same title. In the story, a young child out wandering at night stumbles upon a battlefield littered with grotesquely mangled bodies, some still moving and alive, left behind after the battle. Its a story that everyone should read, and isn't hard to find on the internet.
