Snow Patrol – Crack The Shutters Lyrics 15 years ago
"And in a naked slumber, I dream all this again" is a great line that no one's mentioned yet--falling back asleep after early morning sex and reliving it in light dreams.

This is a beautiful song and I would definitely agree that it's better than Chasing Cars, though perhaps simply because Chasing Cars was quickly overplayed.

It's also a great song to have sex to.

Angie Hart – Blue Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree and disagree, so I have to comment. I think this song is more chronological and--obviously--about Buffy's relationship with Spike and Angel.

I definitely think the warm skin/wolf grin line refers to Angel, not Spike...perhaps Angelus. The fell into the moon part to high-tide/inside is also about Angel and the Suprise night. Especially how she talks about dew--waking up the next morning "and where were you?"

Alix Olsen – Eve's Mouth Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is amazing. I adore the chorus the most; "I'm whole/I'm body/I'm heart/I'm mind/I'm soul" which embodies the message of this song. The issue is, these are all famous women that we don't see beyond the context of their stories. And Alix is saying that each women we reduce to paper-cut characters are whole people--whole women, which sends a message to society in general that we are all whole, despite which caricature/stereotype that we're reduced to.

Ani DiFranco – Shameless Lyrics 17 years ago
jess-ka:

i don't think it's as crude as it sounds; ani is more lyrically talented than that. i definatly think the line has a double meaning, but i generally think that it means that she's got this relationship now and she can't stop talking, thinking etc about it. Like, she can't shut her mouth because she has something she wants to talk about, something she wants to do.

Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend Lyrics 18 years ago
This song WILL NOT get out of my head.

Argggh...no matter how much people complain about Avril, this has to be the catchiest song ever. I'm losing all my indie cred.

Ani DiFranco – What If No One's Watching? Lyrics 19 years ago
Saying this is an anti-god song is oversimplifying it. While that is [debatably] arguable, I think it's more about "being cool." We're always worried about how we're perceived. Not just God-wise: we tend to live as if someone is constantly judging us, looking at us. We design our lives as if we're the main characters in some trippy serio-comic indie film. We design ourselves so that the audience loves us...we worry about if we're on the "right" side.

It's a waste of time. We're so worried about being right that it doesn't matter. Living your life as if someone's watching is okay ("I'd play the good guy in every scene") but it's ridiculous. Because in the end, we have a obligation to try to make the world better...and it doesn't matter if years from now, we'll be remembered and adored, forgotten, or hated. This song is about being clear and honest and living for yourself...because living like someone's watching is a waste of time.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Better Days Lyrics 19 years ago
...Should I mention that I'm an old school fan of the Goo Goo Dolls too? I mean, is my opinion on their songs only taken seriously if I know every song on Hold Me Up by heart? :-P

Personally, I don't know if this song is "cheesy" so much. Cheesy, to me, comes off as sickingly sweet...and I don't think it's that way. I think this is one of the most touching Christmas songs out there. I do think it's on the edge of Christmas, but I think the religion in it doesn't matter so much.

I'd argue that the child in the song IS Jesus...but not Jesus The Son of God, Jesus the Human. I think it's more along the lines of...Jesus was just a person who saved us, and if we just stop and help the people around us, there are probably thousands more children who are capable of it.

Besides the Xmas references, I think it's basically a really good song about moving on and changing. At this point, we're forgiven. The "bad" stuff is done and over and in the past...and we're on the brink of a new beginning and desperately hoping that can be better.

Modest Mouse – Bury Me with It Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about the fear of change. As someone said, hummingbirds can hover in the air, beating their wings but not moving in any direction.

I think this song is about seeing change, seeing things move in different directions and resisting it. An example would be the suit that's "getting tighter and splitting at the seams" but is kept "out of habit." Even though the suit is wrecked and useless...we can't let it go. And even though it doesn't serve any purpose anymore, there's still some attachment to how it USED to be...so he wants to be buried with it.

It's about how you don't want to change, even if that change is inevitable.

And now everyone eats dinner together. :P

The Cure – Last Dance Lyrics 19 years ago
Regret and nostalgia.

He's with a person that he's still wildly in love with--but she's not the same person anymore. And while he remembers over and over how much fun they had and how beautiful she was--and still is--he knows that he can never recreate that love and passion they had then.

It's about regretting change and missing the past.

Garbage – Only Happy When It Rains Lyrics 19 years ago
Shirley Manson is being serious while making fun of herself at the same time. "I'm only happy when it's complicated" is apt...but "I only smile in the dark" is a snarky, grim look on how she knows it's ridiculous to be this way. By taking the feeling to a couple extremes, she shows that she knows it's stereotypical and pretty stupid of her...but the pertinent phrases she uses in certain places shows that she's not just poking fun at the "goth" kids.

NOFX – Re-gaining Unconsciousness Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with milkman also. The baby analogy is trite and overdone and juxtaposed with the awesome lyrical content of the rest of the song, it doesn't stand up.

Hah, what makes you think she's stuck up? She could just be really dumb or racist or something. I'd hate those qualities in someone more.

Oh, and it takes me about three minutes to get up in the morning, and I'm female.

Dogs Die in Hot Cars – Pastimes & Lifestyles Lyrics 19 years ago
I relate this song a lot to ignoring something about yourself that you should embrace, but you're unsure about the reaction to it. It seems like the main character in this song is denying some things about his/herself that they would be better off knowing...yet looking for a place that they can a) be accepted and b) keep their secret at the same time.

I might be way off base, but I don't really care.

The Spill Canvas – Lust A Prima Vista Lyrics 20 years ago
I disagree with Dutch_Courage. I think the song is about using someone plain and simple. I see it as there was a relationship at one point and the girl is still semi-enamored with the guy, but he realizes he can't stand her...but he still lusts after her and she puts out, so it's better than being lonely.
I definatly don't think the "guy" in the relationship wants a relationship or anything more than just fucking.
I love this song.

Nine Inch Nails – We're in This Together Lyrics 20 years ago
I feel like taking the actual meaning to this song--his grandmother, heroine--kind of defeats the purpose. Everyone finds a different meaning in certain songs and people are allowed to be lame and take this song anyway they want. The box to add a comment here doesn't say "What does this song really mean" it says, "What does this song mean to *you*."

Anyway, I feel like this song is really raw and desperate. It's about a relationship with someone that's falling apart at the seams and slowly being ripped into pieces. And they're going through crap and he's trying so hard to hold on to the person but it's being destroyed anyway, regardless of how hard he tries to make it work. The emotion he puts into the song is just wonderful. It's about codependency and being ripped away from something you need.

Blink 182? Bad stickboy. No Dinosaur Jr for you.

I've always thought this song was about Lou Barlow and J Mascis's relationship and all the inner angst in the band at the time.
