Just a side note in regards to the Dostoevsky... I was reading a collection of his works, one of which is entitled, "The Dreams of a Ridiculous Man". Some of the excerpts fit quite nicely with this song. "And no doubt I should have shot myself had it not been for that little girl." "Should I feel shame for that action or not? These were idle and superfluous questions for the revolver were already lying before me, and I knew in every fiber of my being that it would happen for certain, but they excited me and I raged....In short, the child had saved me. " "And do you know what? Well, granted that it was only a dream, yet the sensation of the love of those innocent and beautiful people has remained with me for ever, and I feel as though their love is still flowing out to me from over there. I have seen them myself, have known them and been convinced, I love them, I suffered afterwards." "Often I wondered how it could be that I, a boaster and a liar, never talked to them of what I knew, of which of course, they had no notion - that I was tempted to do so by a desire to astonish or even to benefit them." "Could my petty heart and my fickle, trivial mind have risen to such a revelation of truth? Oh, judge for yourselves: hitherto I have concealed it, but now I will tell the truth! The fact is that I...corrupted them all!!" "I shall make some slips no doubt, and shall perhaps talk, in others' words, but not for long: the living image of what I saw will always be with me and will always correct and guide me. Oh! I am full of courage and freshness and I will go on and on even for a thousand years! Do you know, at first I meant to conceal the fact that I corrupted them, but that was a mistake - that was my first mistake!" "Never mind, I shall go and I shall keep talking, I won't leave off." "If only every one wants it, it can all be arranged at once. And I sought out that little girl...and I shall go on and on!" |

| Rilo Kiley – Asshole Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song seems to me that this dynamic is more than a one-night stand and holding up the expectations of it being something more than it is. I think it's about the frustrations of people waking up next to a person, who has changed and finally realizing that the person you were sleeping next to isn't the person you once thought. That, they woke up an asshole, and you can't believe the luck of it all. And they promise they'll change, that you'll change. But no matter what, even if you hate them, you'd still do anything for them. At least...that's what I get from it. :) |

| The Sound of Animals Fighting – The Heretic Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Actually, and I just saw them earlier at The House of Blues in Hollywood, he specifically says Pumpkin. I couldn't believe it either, but it was crystal clear - he says pumpkin. SHE may say bumkin, but he says pumpkin. They opened with this song (which is my favorite off the album) and Matthew sang it acapella, which actually took away from the song, unfortunately. But because he was the only one singing and with no music, it was easy to hear him annunciate. It's definately pumpkin. But never once was "flesh is heretic, my body is a witch, i am burning it" said, until Act II was sung. Amazing show though. | |

| I think it's somewhat of a love song and a predation theme. Perhaps he was feigning for younger girls and then had sex with them and forgot about them. But this one is "more than meer lust". But, it's unlikely. I'm just trying to give my favorite track the benefit of the doubt. Many psychologists believe predation, rape or the like (perhaps just having sex with many young women) is all about control. "Can't you can't quell this need for submissives?". Also, I think it's "low lothario", it would go with the theme of "gentle gentleman". | |
| Cursive – Retreat! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I agree with Neobonzi, that if you're(God is) absent so often, just leave us alone. The conflicts of opinions and beliefs of the true God and what he wants (Judism, Christianity, Islam...)cause wars because of you, confusing lives and we're better off without you. That we only have problems because of your appearance and disappearance. That if you made us then just let us be. The "lord let us go" at the end is so powerful and amazing. | |
| Cursive – Hymns for the Heathen Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Well not setting up the mood, but resolving it and explaining it. First hymn: Opening the Hymnal/Babies (the son of God complex). Second hymn: Dorothy at Forty (the prodigal damsel). Third hymn: Big Bang (the tree stump of knowledge) Fourth hymn: Bad Sects (passion of the chaplain). Fifth hymn: Flag and Family (brute kiss of Judas). Sixth hymn: Dorothy Dreams of Tornadoes (Sodom falls to ashes [her world coming to an end, the use or tornados ripping it apart]). Seventh hymn: Retreat!! (the church of yourself [since the lyrics refer to being left alone by God]). Eighth hymn: The Sunks (horse of the apocalypse). Ninth hymn: At Conception (emmaculate exception [a priest having a woman get an abortion of his baby]). Tenth hymn: So-So Gigolo (demons of Mary Magdalene [reffering to being a prostitute of sorts]). Eleventh hymn: Bad Science (bible belt tightens). Twelfth hymn: Into the Fold (lecherous shepard). Thirteenth hymn: Rise Up!! Rise Up!! (hiding in confession). Fourteenth hymn: Hymnals for the Heathen (the afterword). |

| To me, this reminds me of Red Handed Sleight of Hand, how he says, "this is the blood on my hands after I wrote this album...I'm on the ugly organ", again setting up the mood, to some extent, of the album. The Fourteen Hymns I believe refer to the 14 tracks on the album, and what each represents, that all of these songs are his hymnals of his own ideology. Kasher is a genius. | |

| I love how it's tied into the a few of the other songs, just like Red Handed Sleight of Hand for The Ugly Organ, and the repetition of "..the worst is over" in Stayling Alive and A Gentleman Caller. Kasher is fantastic. The meaning of the song so blunt, yet poignant. Beautiful. | |
| Cursive – Dorothy at Forty Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Maybe I'm completely off but it seems like Kasher made this song like more of a satire. That we should stop dreaming and just accept the fate of everyday existance, even though it's completely benign. In the other songs he talks about how no one is the "chosen one", there is no point into fantasizing you're something more than you're not. It's almost sad, it just seems that he's resigned himself from dreaming for bigger things and just settling. I think Kasher's got serious issues with the church (obviously) and all the false ideas of being unique and special, since it seems it didn't happen to him or anyone else he cares about. But he is very special, he's a great musician who's given us all a lot, but I guess for someone with a lot of demons, that's not the resolution they want. Sorry, just going off on a tangent. | |
| The Academy Is... – Checkmarks Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Well, maybe I'm just being blunt this sure seems to me that the narrator, or what have you, is having a fling or what not with someone he was previously with. If you read the lyrics and interpret them in literally, it seems like this whole song is about getting head from her. "So there you are, and here I stand, As far as I remember you weren't half bad." Talking about he is getting ready and remembers how she was at the said action.."You get me out of the rain, you get me out of my clothes. You hope I don't make a sound, you hope that no one..." Undressing and hoping no one knows that they are doing what they shouldn't be. Nothing worse than getting walked in on."So suck your so called pity down. Hey, that's not so bad, is it? So take your cold, cold heart and drown and don't forget to take deep breaths." In the crudest way, she's sucking her "pity" down while going down on him. And it's revenge for him in sorts. And the deep breathes? Well that action I've been reffering to needs to take deep breathes."Big words, recycled phrases, and the bittersweet taste of other boys on your lips."Seems to me that he is reffering to their past and her excuses and her premiscuity. Bitter taste on your lips? C'mon.Do you miss looking up from the floor at my face on a stage in a crowded room? Well it's not the same. I bet you're still a sucker for those famous faces.Obviously reffering to her affinity for famous guys, but not particularly a groupie, but perhaps an ex-lover. He's getting back at her both lyrically and physically. He was just another notch/checkmark on her bedpost. At least that's what I get out of it. |

| Neon Blonde – Crystal Beaches Never Turned Me On Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think this is a satire (as are most of the songs Johnny is affiliated with) about the average stay at home persons being obsessed and consumed by the bullshit soap operas on tv. | |
| Toby Keith – The Taliban Song Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Who ever you are countryboy9, you sound like an ignorant jackass. I find this song hilarious and I am a liberal. This song has nothing to do with Liberalism or anything of that sort. It's a country singer making and singing on a song on The Bob and Tom show and being incredibly silly. Pussy ass liberals? The only pussies in this world are ones who can't accept other people. And no, don't take my words and say I am accepting and supporting the Taliban. They should all rot in fucking hell for what they've done, but as for Liberals in America, I see no connection to this song. People are so ignorant. |

| Motion City Soundtrack – L.G. FUAD Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Easily my favourite track on the album. | |
| Metric – The Twist Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I believe it's about finding solace and comfort in, "the rhythm of a strangers skin." She knows better yet continues to do it, even after she is caught. ("Friends and family looking in to my only hiding place") I'm sure there is the alcohol abuse in there somewhere too. But there is definately a connection she feels with these men she has sex with and it's what keeps her alive. Or at least, that's my interpretation of it. | |
| Showbread – The Bell Jar Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I wonder if this song has anything to do with the brilliant novel by Sylvia Plath? | |
| From First to Last – I Liked You Better Before You Were Naked On The Internet Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I'm late to comment on this... :( I saw these guys last month live, and I must say their live peformance is very entertaining, but they tend to butcher their solos. But regardless of that, this song is my favourite on the album. I'd have to agree that the song is short, just like the relationship the song is about. Probablly another romance gone sour due to the other person fucking it up. Lovely none the less. | |
| Eisley – My Lovely Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This song is beautiful. I personally can't give any insight into this song, but the lyrics are amazing. If I had to guess though, I'd assume it's about falling for someone and feeling incomplete without them near you. | |
