| The Decemberists – Shanty for the Arethusa Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
'We've emptied out all the bars and the bowery hotels' Might be a reference to the Navy Press gangs which sought out men to crew the ships (mostly against their will). They'd often raid bars and hotels and merchant ships to get men. Possibly not in this context, I just like the idea :) |

| Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think Elliot Smith too. I really like the last line 'I hope to see you soon in some other form'. Apart from seeing him after death, it could refer to seeing someone else who was inspired by Elliot out there making music too, and inspiring people in turn. Or Someone else who is very good at it, being hailed as re-inventing the genre, when all they are doing has been done before. | |
| Wolf Parade – I'll Believe in Anything Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Here follows a long, convoluted and tenuous explanation: It doesn't really fit into the whole naturalistic ideology that seems to be a theme with the album but I think the line 'If I could take the fire out from the wire' could be about gossip. There's a girl who has a past, and it's catching up/caught up with her and now she has to live with everyone around her knowing. The fire in the wire is the phone line which people use to gossip and bitch about her to each other. And if he could just stop people persecuting her then they'd be happy. 'We've both been very brave Walk around with both legs Wait for the scary day We both pull the tricks out of our sleeves' They both knew the day would come when people would find out, but they just tried to carry on as normal. They had vague plans of what to do if the day came but they were superficial and fleeting, not really a solution. He's been trying to shield her from it all, by taking her eyes, her blood/bones etc away, by keeping her close/averting her attention or whatever. 'But I'll believe in anything And you'll believe in anything' He doesn't care about her past, he'll accept anything she tells him about it, even if it's a lie. And hopefully she'll believe it eventually too. 'And I could take another hit for you....' He'll help her face it/stick it out with her until it gets better. 'I'd take you where nobody knows you And nobody gives a damn' They'll start another life together where nobody knows about her/what she's done. Doesn't have to be about a girl/it could be a boy or a friend/family member or whatever. Anyways, whatever it's about, it's a brilliant song, I listen to it way too much :) |

| It's either Conor singing or someone's been taking extensive singing lessons from him :) | |
| Tilly and the Wall – Bad Education Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I hadn't heard anything by Tilly and The Wall before downloading this song, I'd only heard of them in reference to Conor Oberst/Team Love etc. but WOW! This song caught my eye because I love Bad Education the film and to find out this song is based on that film really makes me smile. Brilliant song, brilliant band, bought the albums, seeing them live next month! Does their tap dancer tour with them? |

| Brian Eno – Needles in the Camel's Eye Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| No idea what it means except maybe it's about doing and discovering the impossible. I didn't understand a word of what was being sung until I looked up the lyrics, but it's a totally wonderfully completely brilliant song :D | |
| The Libertines – France Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I love the Legs XI demo of this song the most, with Carl lighting up a fag and the random Pete intro/Carl outbursts. Laaaaaaaadiesss and Geeeeeentlemeeen, Carlos Barat with his self penned contemporary ballad classic....... |

| The Decemberists – The Engine Driver Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Such a pretty melancholy song... ...It kind of strikes me as being about frustration and stagnation, that kind of thing. Being stuck in one place or having no escape. He's stuck on railway tracks and can't go where he wants. Mostly I think it's about a relationship - maybe he married too young and now feels trapped, feels he has to go the distance (on a long run/she's a long one). She still loves him (heart that you call home)and needs him, so he feels obligated to her but doesn't love her, referring to himself as banker which makes me think of morgages and long term contracts. He makes up his feelings, it's all fiction. But he can't get rid of her. I love the 'powerlines in our bloodlines' lyric, maybe he's worried history will repeat itself and his kids/grandkids will end up in the same situation. Anyways, The Decemeberists are wonderful. |

| Kings of Leon – King of the Rodeo Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I find this song really melancholy, I loved it before even reading the lyrics (I could never understand the accent!) But having seen the Withnail line I'm inclined to follow csa09 in the Withnail & I reference. I think it's even more melancholy now. I reckon it's about not getting what you want from life, things not working out exactally how you imagined they would. Withnail was never sucessful, the person in the song never got to be the Rodeo king, no matter how much they wanted it. Or whatever. I love this song. And Withnail & I. |

| The Decemberists – Odalisque Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Odalisque is also the title/name of a painting of a beautiful young woman by Delacroix, and he was quite fond of death and sex. I was so pleased to discover this song as I love the painting and this seems to fit it perfectly. | |

| Bright Eyes – Lava Monster Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think he was like, 13 when he recorded this song! It's pretty impressive for a young 'un. It's such a cute and distubing mix of intense feelings and child-like imagination (with the idea of a lava monster). | |
| Hefner – When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I love the line 'let me, let you, let me down again'. It's so sweet, like he's saying to the girl, 'look, you can get out of this, you can leave it all behind and I won't be angry, I'll understand'. Romance without the aspartame. Beautiful. | |
| Hefner – Christian Girls Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I read somewher that Darren H hates this song. But I think it's lovely. I think it's about a guy who's into porn in a heavy way and the idea of some pure, innocent catholic school-girl type is a bif turn on. But when he comes across one he's mortified to discover he wants her to be kept innocent 'to my hearts dismay I want to kiss all her fingers' and 'the idea of sex...' And although he keeps having dirty thoughts he just can't bring himself to act on them. |

| Bright Eyes – The Calendar Hung Itself . . . Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Speaking of wasting time, I think the line: 'The clock’s heart it hangs inside its open chest with its hands stretched towards the calendar hanging itself.' Is a reference to wasting time, to being so numb that the days melt into each other and you just go though every day wishing it was the last one. And the lines: 'But I will not weep for those dying days. For all the ones who left theres a few that stayed. And they found me here and pulled me from the grass where I was laid.' Are him/the character overcoming the depression/numbness and realising that there may be some days worth living for. Edited by mellow_harsher on July 25 2006, at 03:56AM |

| Yay for Singing John! He has a lovely voice. | |
| The Postal Service – Suddenly Everything Has Changed (The Flaming Lips cover) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| A beautiful cover. I think this song is about death, just someone who's been going through their life numbed by the death of a loved one and not really paying attention to anything in the real world. Then suddenly they 'wake up' and reaslise how things have changed, they notice the patterns in the clouds, the shirts bring back memories. | |
| The Libertines – What Katie Did Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
'Oh hurry up, Mrs Brown I can feel 'em coming down and it won't take none too long' I think this bit was hlf-inched from some old music hall song, Chaz n Dave stylee. |
|
| The Libertines – Up The Bracket Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I thought the 'two shadow men' were a reference to the Kray twins, who grew up on the Vallance road in Bethnal Green, where Pete/Carl/whoever lived for a time. | |
| The Libertines – Dilly Boys Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This song is about Carl being a woman. Obviously! :) The part about writing the words to the saddest songs alludes to his depression and the line 'he's the sweetest girl in the world' is self explanatory. |

| The Libertines – Campaign Of Hate Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I *Love* the line "don't believe them when they say that you don't get nothing for free, it's all for free, follow me" Cos music is free, anyone can make it and anyone can join in. I have this mental picture of Pete as the Pied Piper, leading all these kids to an impromptu gig. |
|
| The Libertines – I Got Sweets Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I always thought this song was about drugs. I think it means that no matter who you are or what you have, people are united in their need for 'sweets'. 'Some people go up and others they go down' is obviously uppers/downers/things that really mess you up. |
