Gregory and the Hawk – Boats and Birds Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes me feel like the narrator is in love with a baoy who is going to leave without him knowing her feelings for him. He can go away, as long as he leaves something for her to remember him by. Sad, beautiful, and haunting.

Bob Dylan – Love Minus Zero/No Limit Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree that this is a love song. But the lover is far from perfect.

I think the first couple of lines in every verse seem to talk of people who aren't as educated, wordly, or exceptional as his love. He's raising her above imperfection; above the trembling bridges, rambling doctors, and crumbling statues. But the very last line, with his love at the window with a broken wing lets you know that even though she's amazing to him, she's not perfect. That she may be closer to the rambling doctors and the trembling bridges than the beginning of the song let on.

"She knows there's no success like failure
And that failure's really no success at all."
^ Just another one of Dylan's perfect lines.

Modest Mouse – Space Travel Is Boring Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm probably repeating someone here, but I see it as running away. Very similar theme to "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset" and to the rest of the album. The theme of running away from society, or your past, or pressures... all the things you go to bed hoping to leave behind the next morning only to find they're still with you as soon as you wake up. So you try to leave everything, thinking that putting miles between your past and your future will cure you. But they'll catch up to you, and then you'll just want to go home. Because even if you return home to the bad, you won't be alone in the new.

David Bowie – Changes Lyrics 18 years ago
So, I was watching Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (This is going somewhere, I promise), and it gets to the part where they're like.. singing or something for a play. I don't even remember. Truth be told I lost intrest in the movie about ten minutes into it, but I was babysitting and the children I was watching apparently had not lost interest. So she's in the middle of a song I don't know when all of a sudden she goes into a song that sounds very familiar (later I found out it was Stevie Wonder's "Living in the City"). Then she goes into another song and what do I hear? "Turn and face the change, ch-ch-changes. Just gonna have to be a different girl." It was in the tune to David Bowie, it was similar lyrics to David Bowie... I was so pissed, I sat straight up in my chair and I was just like, what the fuck... she just ripped off David Bowie!

I hate when people take good things and make them suck.

Paul Simon – Still Crazy After All These Years Lyrics 18 years ago
Ah, I love this song. Completely straight forward. That feeling of meeting someone you used to have feelings for, or used to be with and then realizing that no matter how many days pass... you're still crazy, after all those years.

The live versions are amazing.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with Gama. It's like taking a step back from living to watch everyone else live. And to watch Time as it moves throughout our lives. And kettles, and seeds in the soil, and babies... they NEED Time to change or grow. But the old and various others don't WANT Time. It's about how Time is fickle, and it can help some and hinder others. But in spite of all of this, it keeps the world moving, and that makes it's beautiful.

Just like this song.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society – Younger Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Pretty self explanitory. Narrator's in a relationship with an older woman, while he's barely a man. It ends badly. and then he becomes older than she was at the time they were together and realizes that everyone who told him that dating an older woman wasn't a good idea was probably right.

The end.

Bob Dylan – My Back Pages Lyrics 18 years ago
My dad who's followed Dylan since the beginning said that he thought this song was about how the public was making Dylan the martyr of their generation. And that ties into what everyone is saying about youth, and fighting the man and then realizing that you still have a lot to learn. That he realized that he couldn't be the martyr, that he had more to learn.

The Clash – Koka Kola Lyrics 18 years ago
I pretty much agree with all of you. That it's bashing the corporate world and mainly coca cola companies for basically taking advantage of the public just to make money. Trading in morality for cash. The chorus seems like they're making fun of the people that go along with major companies to make money, like a lot of artists do with record companies. They take advice from the advertising world and then they go to a lot of parties and places that general public couldn't afford. Then they go on to talk about all of the places that money has brainwashed everyone that begin to touch it... like white house and berlin; some of the places where the executives of the world live. The part about the snub nosed 44 confuses me. It just sorta reminds me of people being so strung out on cocaine that they jump out of windows, haha. i doubt that's right though. Can anyone explain it? Please?

The Velvet Underground – Pale Blue Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with venus in furs. This song seems to be that he loves someone so much that it doesnt matter if he's with her or not. Especially in the beginning of the song, no matter how mad she makes him or how sad he is, he's okay as long as he can still linger on her pale blue eyes. This song makes me feel like I'm following a lifetime in a way. "Skip a life completely" I can't really explain it, but it feels the listener of the song is being taken through years of love and heartbreak, sort of. Like the love is so deep and so is the heartache that it lasts a whole life time. Anyone else feel this way? Anyway, I think the love and the lives gets to a point where they both give into the temptation and have an affair. Even though it's "truly, truly a sin."

And, ya know, it could very well be about a boy or a girl.

U2 – One Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm sure this has been said because there's about 50-billion posts on this song but I think it was meant to pertain to love as a general concept. As humans, the majority of us show some sort of love- whether in a romantic, familial, friendship or worldly way. A lot of us our lucky to experience it all. No matter your situation, this song is relatable.

Bob Dylan – Visions of Johanna Lyrics 18 years ago
This may have been mentioned, and there are quite a lot of posts, and i havent read them all. However, this is what I've heard the song to be about:

The narrator is in the room next to his lover or former lover, while they're with another man. The "lights are flickering from the opposite loft" and in his room "the heat pipes just cough." The lover is in the next room, so entwined with another.

Johanna, is most likely the other man. They've taken his place, they've kept the narrator up past dawn, they've made everything seem cruel, and they're all that remain in the end. Just visions of Johanna with his lover.

The second verse is about the conversation going on between the lover and the other man. This one line explains it all: "Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall."

This theme carries on later in the song, but with less clarity. The reference to the Mona Lisa amazes me. If I stick to what I think this song about, it's that the Mona Lisa is merely hanging on the wall, watching everything else unfold, just like the Narrator.

In the last verse, his conscience explodes, because he feels guilty for what he knows and has been in the room next to.

That's just what I think. Anyone agree?

Bob Dylan – Queen Jane Approximately Lyrics 18 years ago
"approximately" means nearly, or close to, usually in correctness (correctness.. is that a word?!). But i this case i thinks it just means she's nearly a queen, but not quite. And I've always seen it as someone who no one else viewed as good enough, except Dylan. and he would except her, and view her as a Queen, even though she wasn't. Hence "approximately".

Bob Dylan – Desolation Row Lyrics 18 years ago
This song sorta reminds me of a place that holds a lot of "misfits", a lot of societies "rejects". Who in fact are just people too, even great people and they reflect how the whole world is.

My brain makes weird connections, and I like to think that the place described in "Ballad of a Thin Man" is on Desolation Row. haha, i have too much time on my hands.

Bob Dylan – Standing in the Doorway Lyrics 18 years ago
A simply amazing song. Probably my favorite Dylan song also, although I'm moving through his stuff slowly, so i can fully absorb it all. I havent heard everything yet (theres so much, haha)

"Don't know if I saw you, if I would kiss you or kill you
It probably wouldn't matter to you anyhow."
Honestly, anyone who has ever broken up with someone should understand that line.

And the song paints a picture too, as it goes along, such great imagery of a depressed man moving from a bars to home, trying to find happiness. and with no luck.

Ah, gotta love Dylan.

Bob Dylan – Not Dark Yet Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always sensed this song was written about how love dies. The protagonist onced loved a woman, and she left him (she wrote me a letter) and he's become hardened by it (I ain't looking for nothing in anyone's eyes, feels like my soul has turned into steal). But he still has a long way to fall, he hasnt hit rock bottom of the depression or sadness he feels (It's not dark yet, but it's gettin there). pictorialpyyro hit it on the head, basically.

Oh, and i've always connected this song with "Standin' in the Doorway." They're very similar, prehaps the person in this song was the one who left him "Standing in the doorway, crying."

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Isaac Brock mentions dogs in a LOT of his songs.
1. Dog Paddle
2. Wild Pack of Family Dogs
3. Jesus Christ was an Only Child
4. and in Never Ending Math Equation he says, "Oh my God and oh my cat." and we all know god is dog spelled backwards.

So this leads to me the point that has been mentioned. If he mentions dogs, 90% of the time, it has something to do with religion. Dog is simply a "code" for God backwards, which leads to religion and society and everything.

Yeah, just a thought.

Anyone think it could be related to the Lounge off of Lonesome Crowded West? That the guy and the girl in Lonesome's song are the same guy and girl in Long Drive's song?

I think Lonesome's "Lounge" makes references to dancing and partying, and so does this song. I think this was a precursor to the other one, but that's just me.

Counting Crows – Round Here Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm sure it's been said before, seeing as i haven't read EVERY post here. But honestly, for someone who comes from one, this song SCREAMS small town.

Maria represents the sadness of small towns- the desperation to be somewhere bigger, better. The desperation we feel in a place where everyone knows us, where we carve out our names and our stories for everyone else living around us to see. But she also represents the need to stay there, that somewhere there is a love for that place. The narrator expresses that love, also.

Jesus, angles, sex, suicide, staying up late, it's all a part of living in a place like the one in the song.

Plus, I've always thought Hangin Around was related to this song, the positive part of small-town life.

Bruce Springsteen – Atlantic City Lyrics 18 years ago
I just imagined this song to be about the desperation of the middle/lower middle class. How it's hard to make money (sometimes you have to do "favors"), and how crime is everywhere ("DA can't get no relief"). And even though everything dies (Love, happiness) it could all come back if you just do something to try ("Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty, And meet me tonight in Atlantic City.").

So yeah, that's my theory.

System of a Down – Lonely Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm sorta torn with between the whole emo/soldier side thing here.

When I first heard it, I definately thought it was mocking emo.

But then I came on here, and I saw the whole soldiers side thing, and they BOTH made sense.

However, there are several themes that run through SOAD songs. Two of them being:
1) War
2) Mocking corporate America, the government, etc.

SOAD writing a song about a soldier to lead into Soldier Side (which links the two albums) on Hypnotize and making it look like a song mocking emo wouldn't be that shocking coming from a band who lives to be crazy and shocking.

I mean, think about the last two songs on Hypnotize. They allow the album to take a more serious turn (Loney Day is two tracks after Vicinity of Obscenity, which isn't exactly the most serious song in the world). And also, they link the two albums. And Mezmerize constantly attacks aspects of American society: Our President, hollywood.... wouldn't emo fit that list?

So, there it is. Why this song could be an emo song in disguise that's actually about a soldier.
