I think this song is about a difficult relationship the singer has had with a girl who kept hurting him but insisting they stay together through all these bad patches. Now the guy has taken all the hurt he can stand and is really ending it this time, he's leaving their/her home and they're going to meet up and talk through all the reasons why he's ending it and all the reasons why they can't make it work, and make her see, and end it. I don't really know anything bout the whole john person leaving the band I'm a fairly new fan I only know their Where You Want To Be album but I guess you could change what I've written about a girl and relationship problems to be about the john person and their relationship problems. I'm under the assumption that I'm gonna be the one that's leaving you tonight, tonight (^he's anticipating this afternoon. slightly sarcastic, because the idea that she would leave him is ridiculous now, because she never wants to leave him, she always wants to stay together however bad it gets. it's always her that is hurting him) Well I've flipped every switch that I could find on my way out just to upset you more (just to keep you busy), Just to make you angry (just because you were right), (^he's exiting her house to go meet up with her, and he wants to upset her because he's pissed at her for being such a sad case every single time he wants to leave making it so difficult for him, and for causing him so much pain, and he has no concern for the way she always acts so upset about him wanting to end it because she shouldn't be and she always is, making it even harder, and he's just numbed himself to her tears and wants to make her hurt more, match the pain she's caused him. he also wants to make her hate him and let him go this time. so "flipping every switch" could be literal to make sure that once he's gone she'll be so pissed at him she won't want him back. and it could also be metaphorical, 'pushing all the right buttons' knowing all the ways to hurt her and using them, to make her hate him want him to leave and not be so upset and make leaving so difficult. All tired, scream safe haven, let's get this out and on the table (^he's tired of their difficult relationship. he wants them both to put all their cards on the table, and be honest about where their relationship has been and is going, so his partner can understand him leaving and let him go this time.) Fast forward to say four o' clock (^several hours later they've met up and he's stll persauding her and they're still talking it over. she won't yet give in and give him up) I'm keeping time, I'm holdin', we're always holdin' (always holdin), we're always holdin, holding out (^he's impatient, checking his watch a lot. he wants to get this over and done with. he wants to be free. but he's staying and continuing their discussion for her sake, holding out even though he wants to walk out the door this minute. it's taking all this time to make her see. she has always wanted, every time they have relationship troubles, to stick together, hold out through every hurt and fall out, even when staying together isn't the right thing to do) and that's what got us here in the first place, (^if they had broken up at the first time things turned bad, instead of holding on through the bad times, they wouldn't be in such a mess now) You should have never come here alone You should have never bothered at all (^"you shoudn't have come here alone" is what one might say to meeting someone who is alone in a dangerous place, or to a lost child. and so I think this means he's saying to her she's naieve and immature and if she can't stand to have a relationship end, then she clearly needs to be mothered and is not mature or intelligent enough to be in an adult relationship.) You shuold have never bothered at all (^he either wishes that the relationship never started and that all this effort hadn't been put into it, or that she shouldn't have tried so hard to make it work because it was the wrong thing to do, or both) We're older and wiser, still filled with resentment (^he's still trying to make her see why he's leaving her. they're older, and wiser, and should both now be able to see that splitting up is the only option. and they're full of resentment from all the other pain now, their relationship is not going to work with so much anger and pain, resentment that is not going to go away) We did it, we did it all (^they've done everything possible to try and keep their relationship together and it hasn't worked. and/or they have had a lot of good times and theres no more good that can come out of them being together) (I haven't been happier since) (^he's happy that they're finally getting all their cards on the table and things are looking like they're going to end, because he hasn't been happy since the first time she hurt him.) Well, five 'o clock the floor caught fire with footsteps (my footsteps) It spread like a disease to the door (^an hour later he's finally saying goodbye and walking out. "spreading like a disease" suggests he's getting out asap, with haste, and that it's also still painful to leave.) (I'm stuttering through it but I hear it) (^despite his resentment, he's nervous, sad and finding this dififcult, yet still firm about his descision) Well I, I hear it's good t-t-to stick with what you know and you know a whole lot of this It all could have been avoided when you were courtside for this nightmare (^it's difficult for him, but he knows it's good to stick to what you know, and they both know all this pain could have been avoided and should be avoided. Courtside = the area immediately bordering the official court of play in sport. So I've concluded, she distanced herself from his pain and their relationship troubles and yet knew it was there, 'watched from the sidelines' as he struggled through this nightmare, and she could of and should have ended it or let it end then) Well since then I got myself, come and listen (^since then he's "found himself" and is confident that he knows what he wants, and how well he could be doing without her. he wants her to listen to what he's said and is saying about why the relationship ending will be a good thing.) Well, it used to take so much more (I used to, I used to too) (^he used to be able to tolerate a lot more from her. but he's had enough. it also used to take so much more for him to be able to get the courage to get up and leave, and before it would have taken a lot more than this for her to let him go, this shows that the love is definetley gone. at this climax of the song, she finally understands why breaking up is neccessary, and he's able to go.) |

My immediate thoughts about this was about her partner being unfaithful. I don't have any doubts that I'm completely wrong, but here are my ideas anyhow "I know it, I can't feel it Well, I know it enough to believe it And I know it, I can't see it But I know it enough to believe it" She can tell she's lost him, even if he's acting like everythings back to normal. OR she can tell she's loosing him, and even though she can't see any proof, she knows that he's been with someone else "bitter you, bitter me My better half has bitten me bitter you, bitter me" Her boyfriend has thrown everything in her face by sleeping with someone else, and they're now both bitter "Sleeping with my enemy Myself Myself" She hates herself for staying with this man "The pieces of Jennifer's body Found pieces of Jennifer's body Found pieces of Jennifer's body" This could be about her finding out abuot the girl "Jennifer" he has cheated on her with, or finding clues "Just relax, just relax, just go to sleep Just relax, just relax, just go to sleep" Maybe they are trying to start over, but she can't stop thinking abuot what he did and is trying to stop thinking about it "You're hungry, but I'm starving" Their relationship may have been strained, and he might have gone to this Jennifer because he was lonely, but she was more lonely "He cuts you down from the tree He keeps you in a box by the bed Alive, but just barely" She feels used and alone and her partner keeps her "in a box by the bed" keeps her shut away and doesn't take pride in her He said, "I'm your lover, I'm your friend I'm purity, hit me again" He made her promises, he told her he would be her lover and her friend and be true to her, "pure" and yet when she is angry at him when she finds out about Jennifer he is either arrogant and says he is "pure, hit me again" because it won't matter to him, or that he still loves her, and that he doesn't care if she tries to hurt him "With a bullet, number one, kill the family, save the son Himself Himself" He has killed their relationship, but he only cares about himself "Just relax, just relax, just go to sleep Now you're mine..." She is again trying to relax and stop thinking about his betrayal, reminding herself he may have been with someone else but he's her's now, and trying to convince herself she shouldn't worry about it anymore |

"I tumble into space, tryin to stop the fall" He blindly tumbles into a world of drugs "My body ripped and tore, I could have floated in space" Drugs damaged his body, but they made him feel weightless and carefree "I stumble 'round my home, I am on the outside" The drug make him stumble alone around his house with little control over his actions, and on the outside because he is outcast from his friends because of his problems "My legs and arms are lead, feeling love from no one" His limbs seem to weigh a ton from the effects of the drugs. He feels love from no one cos he is depressed and he doesn't see his old friends any more or they dont want to see him cos of his drug problem "My head weighs ninety-pounds and I've been down" Again his head feeling the effects of the drugs and he's been down, he's seen a dark side of life and he's been really depressed "My friends are aliens" He feels alienated from his friends. "Well now I've got no wife" Maybe metaphorical, or maybe meaning literally that his spouse left him because of his drug use "Cut a lizard's tail, it grows back to life" I've always taken this as being the start of him giving up, perhaps because his wife left him and he realise "I killed some sleepless nights," Perhaps this means he took drugs cos he couldn't sleep. Or maybe it just means he killed some sleepless nights thinking bout all his mistakes. Notice it moves into the past tense, reflecting my previous comment "my heart's torn to pieces" He has a broken heart because he's lost his partner and his friends and he's lonely and depressed cos of what drugs have done to him |

This is what I believe this song to be about. Along the same lines of many of the above but... mmyeah "There must be something In the way I feel That she don't want me to feel" He loves this girl, but she doesn't want him to love her "The stare she bares cut me" He was really hurt by the look she gave him when he told her "I don't care You see so what if I bleed" This could mean he doesnt care that she hurt her he still wants, or it could mean that he doesn't care if he 'bleeds' and dies, he feels so bad that she doesn't feel the same, or both "I could never change Just what I feel" He can't change how he feels about thi girl, although sometimes he might want to because his unrequited love is so painful "My face will never show What is not real" I take this as meaning he's bad at lying... His mouth can make the words but his face tells a different story "A mountain never seems to have The need to speak" He feels stupid that he opened his big mouth and told her, and wishes he was unable to speak, like for example a mountain "A look that shares so many see" Not sure I quite understand abuot this, how bout you lot? "The sweetest feeling I got from you " Speaks for itself... His love for her, how great he felt around her "The things I said to you were true" The love for her he spoke of was completely true, he wasn't teasing her or messing around "I could have lied I'm such a fool" He could have lied and never shown his feelings. He feels he's a fool for telling her because if he hadn't then maybe she'd still be around or they'd still be good friends. "My eyes could never never never Keep their cool" This seems to me like his perhaps 'burning' eyes gave his feelings away and he decided he couldn't hold it in any longer "Showed her and I told her how She struck me" He showed her what she meant to him in some way, told her of his feelings, and how she had struck him with her beauty or whatever "but I'm fucked up now" But she rejected him "But now she's gone yes she's gone away A soulful song That would not stay" Now she's left, or are they are no longer close, because of him telling her this "You see she hides 'cause she is scared" She avoids him because she was spooked by his admission, or perhaps she too has deeper feelings for him that frighten her "But I don't care I won't be spared" This could be he doesn't care that she avoids him now BECAUSE she may share his feelings for her... It's not gonna change how things turned out. Anyway, thats my take. :) |

I haven't heard this song, but I came across these lyrics by accident and am fairly impressed. I can totally relate to them, except the end part of the song. I've been depressed for a long long time and have no recollection of ever being pleased that I didn't commit suicide. Often I hate myself more for not having the courage to do it. Usually even when I'm experiencing some, shortlived, happiness in my life I have no hope for the future and that I'll be still be happy tommorow, and I still wish I was dead and that the last time I nearly commited suicide I had fuckin managed to do it. Gosh, apologies for the rant. Just I don't know many other people who have experienced suicidalness and reading bout other peoples experience kinda gave me the desire to talk about my own suicidalness :S random |

Personally I take it as meaning metaphorically how sometimes when you're really down people punish you for your misery, they're not there for you they just reject you because they want to be happy and not have your depression bother them. But I guess it could also be more literal, like she's done something stupid, a crime, because she's alone and depressed and now they want to give her seven years for her crime, seven years because she was sad and alone. What do you the rest of you think about this bit? |

"sweet cherry" equals sweet young virgins with sheltered lives and awful taste in music "They know how to break all the girls like you And they rob the souls of the girls like you" sounds like it's about the music industry marketing terrible music at the young and naieve "He's drunk, he tastes Like candy, he's so beautiful He's so deep like dirty water God, he's awful" This sounds like it's about Kurt, I don't know of any other teen idols that she's dated, and naieve young teeny boppers worshipping him and thinking he's beautiful, and really deep but really he's... Kurt. lol. "And they royalty rate all the girls like you And they sell it out to the girls like you To incorporate little girls" This is about bands selling out to appeal to a wider audience; a younger, more niaeve audience "You're ripe for the picking, it's so awful You've got your youth Don't waste your money Yeah it's awful " I believe this is her advising the sweet cherries to realise that they listen to rubbish and not waste their money on awful music "I was punk! Now I'm just stupid! I'm so awful" This does sound like it's about Hole selling out... Their music on this album is definetly more radio friendly. "If the world is so wrong Yeah you can break them all With one song If the world is so wrong yeah you can take it all With one song " This is clearly about the influence music has on people. "They bought it all, just build a new one, Make it beautiful...yeah" This seems to be about Courtney's idealisim that bands should break away from the current way of selling music and stuff and do it their own way where bands own their own music etc |

this song as someone has already pointed out was originally called Razor Blades.. I remember finding that out and suddenly the song made such perfect sense. It clearly talks about teenage depression and self harm. I swear the opening lyric is "you're so lonely" contrary to endless lyrics sites :S its that in the original Razor Blades anyhow, and this reflects the idea that there is no one more lonely than the person who is lonely in a crowd of people; the person surrounded by popular people with lots of friends but who has none of their own. This is synonymous with unpopular teenagers. Also "the scars on your skin post no bills" I take this as meaning that the self inflicted scars don't solve anything. The rest of it speaks for itself. I love this song, I can relate to it so badly. |
