This song sounds very similar to a song by REM called "country feedback" which Courtney claims was written by Michael Stipe about her. But that was probably just an accident. This song is most likely about someone she had a one night stand with who later talked about her in the tabloids ruining her once pristine reputation. Judging by the last lines I am narrowing it down to either of two people: Buffalo Springfield or Sting. But a more likely interpretation is that these lyrics are the ramblings of a drug addled schizoaffective murderess. |

This song reminds me of that Andrew Marvell poem "to his coy mistress" only it's kind of in reverse. Instead of talking jack and diane into having sex and growing up, he is saying. "hold out on having sex, be a kid. you don't have to grow up and start a family in the city right now at 16 cause you have the whole rest of your life to do that boring adult stuff. instead, justs it back and do kid stuff while you can, cause when you're older, these younger times are the ones you're going to be wishing you still had"
it's kind of a carpe diem song about living in the day rather than trying to live your entire life all at once. |

What does "head like a hole/ black as your soul." mean. It could mean "your head is like a black hole." you consume everything that society has to offer you without questioning it. you buy everything on TV commercials, and you pay money to the church because you unquestioningly believe in religion cause they told you to.
also the lyrics sound similar to "(give) head like a whore" and "(if you've) Got money, ill do anything for you."
so it is like comparing religion to prostitution or sex in general and saying that the catholic church or any other church is no better than a prostitute or a pimp. some people are ruled by sex, and others by jesus. |

Vedder doesn't want people to pry into his life. i think this song is about quitting heroin and becoming sober. the reason i think so is because the third step prayer in Narcotics Anonymous goes: "God,/ take my will and my life/guide me in my recovery./ Show me how to live." All the Christ imagery he is using has parallels with withdrawal symptoms. The sleeplessness, the constant prayers and the questioning about whether this is the cure or the disease. The NA program teaches that addicts are born with different brain chemistry than normal people, and therefore are predisposed to addiction. In this respect, Chris was born with a nail in his hand from his creator. He is questioning why God would afflict him with this disability and he is using the third step prayer to ask how God expects him to live. from him, It's a bit cynical "Thanks for the illness jackass, now what?" but whether he himself believes in God or not, he still wants to be sober, and he uses the language of the recovery program for lyrics. |
