The Smashing Pumpkins – Daydream Lyrics 20 years ago
Yes, D'arcy did a nice job on vocals here, but I still would love to hear Billy sing it (the "Daydream" part of the song)...it just seems right up his alley. A sentimental acoustic-driven piece about loss and pain. This is definitely an amazing song, I just really wish Billy would have sung the whole thing (he wrote it...too bad he gave it to D'arcy to sing).

Oh, and Ciyaak Boy, don't analyze Billy's drug habbit too deeply. His songs were indeed fueled by his inner pain and loss. Drugs honestly don't make you write better songs (sorry to shatter that completely illogical misconception). Trust me (I have a "friend" who might have tried a time or two)! And it's not as if Billy was tripping 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!! And taking drugs (I'm going to shatter another wildly popular misconception here...I apologize in advance) does NOT make you a "different" person. It might slighty alter your train of thought at the moment, but drugs do nothing more than that (and NO, I am not defending any sort of drug use). Acid does not transport you to some astral plane in the sky, like in the movies. Billy's songs were nothing if not completely authentic and heartfelt. You can't fake the emotion that you'll find in this song, and any other Pumpkins song!!!

The Smashing Pumpkins – Transformer Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree...there's a whole slew of songs that could have replaced Take Me Down (most notably this song, Jupiter's Lament, and The Last Song--I know, I know, Billy hadn't finished recording that song by the time MCIS came out...why not delay it a couple of days and finish that song?...he's certainly delayed his solo album about a year).

Also, perhaps he should have expanded his album to 30 songs (to match the Beatles White Album track for track). He had enough room on the CD's.

Oh well, this song is amazing. It's about a girl who just can't be satisfied, and wants more and more and more...

I know she wants more and more and more to stomach
In honor of her youth

The Smashing Pumpkins – Vanity Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with hesitating stars above. The girl is throwing her life to drugs, and (Billy) is being torn apart by it...not only is she ripping his heart out (because, at the moment at least, she holds his heart in her hand), but his life is spiraling downwards because of it.

And quite honestly, I have been with someone who did so many drugs and drank so much alcohol at parties that she would lose control over herself. It tore me apart because there was nothing I could do except agonize over her when I wasn't with her, and keep an eye over her (which sometimes involved fighting the other groping and horny males) when she started "partying". This song touches on that dark agony perfectly.

cursed fall will find you
and bring a memory
the ghost of her surrender
with the kiss of anarchy

...and what a guitar solo there in the middle!! I feel this song is about being trapped as time passes by, like a dream where something is coming, but you just can't seem to move.

Zwan – Heartsong Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with The-D, this song has a Pumpkins-like theme (Billy getting his heart broken by "the girl"). Oh, and the lyrics:

"I use the same words
to say the same things"

are amazing. This is a great song!

Zwan – Jesus, I Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with TREXOR and thedungbeetle...this song is about Christianity, peace, and joy. But take a look at the Smashing Pumpkins lyrics, and you'll find many similar topics. Billy has always written about God and Jesus, however, he is now writing from a different perspective. With the Pumpkins, he was pleading with God to deliver him from loneliness/help him find his way back from the darkness, etc. Now, he is writing (singing, actually, since he didn't write the lyrics to the Jesus I part of the song) about the peace he is finding in God, Jesus, and his religion. Is he Catholic? Who cares? Being Catholic myself, I can tell everyone that Catholicism is just a strict and traditional way of embracing God. It is not much different from any Protestant branch of Christianity--we all believe in the same basic catechism. But if the title you put on Billy's religion matters to you, I think even Billy wouldn't want you listening to his music.

The Smashing Pumpkins – To Forgive Lyrics 20 years ago
Such great posts before me---I agree with you all. One line in the song really does it for me though...

"empty party afternoons won't come back"

This line just elicits in my mind a time-faded picture of a child sitting alone in his backyard with a birthday cake, candles quietly burning out, a tear silently falls from an innocent eye as he waits for someone, anyone, to come spend a bit of time with him...this just perfectly defines the concept of loneliness (a reoccuring Pumpkins theme...in fact, one could make an argument that it is the PREVAILING Pumpkins theme).

Kill Hannah – Welcome To Chicago Motherfucker Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow, doesn't this song just make you want to go and live life HARD? Where you're not sure where you're going and you know you don't care, just as long as the ride to that unknown, unforseen destination is FAST...

Kill Hannah – They Can't Save Us Now Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is much like Boys and Girlz...it's about burning heats that time cannot quench...wanting and needing someone even as your own life spirals downward into oblivion. And they can't save us, they can't save us, they can't save us now...

"fatal love"...very poetic...nice!!

I agree...this song is about burning heats that time cannot quench...wanting and needing someone even as your own life spirals downward into oblivion.

So, let's dance like it's the end of the world...

Kill Hannah – All He Wants (American Jet Set) Lyrics 20 years ago
Kill Hannah is all about a dark and frantic desperation, a burning in one's heart that time just won't quench...sadness, anger, despair, and hope (yes, hope) all thrown into a fire together. Being alone even as a crowded world is passing you by. And this song is one of Kill Hannah's best and most frenetic. Absolutely bone-chilling.

Kill Hannah – Raining All The Time Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song reminds me most of the Pumpkins (out of all the Kill Hannah songs)...at least off the top of my head. It's an amazing song full of emotion, desperation, and sadness. A great, great song.

Drug use, loneliness, sadness, desperation, loss of faith and hope...these are the meanings (emotions) that I take from the song. Absolutely wonderful song...like americanmusic said above me, words cannot properly describe this song.

Kill Hannah – Is Anyone Here Alive? Lyrics 20 years ago
The emotion conveyed by this song always kinda makes me shiver. Mat and the gang perfectly capture their frantic desperation to find ...something... in their lives. An absolutely amazing song (and my favorite off of For Never & Ever), this song sometimes makes me feel as if I am the only one alive, the world around me gone.

The Smashing Pumpkins – 17 Lyrics 20 years ago
The song does sound very...archaic...a perfectly disquieting way to end a haunting album. The song sounds old, with an air of sadness, coldness, and loneliness conveyed by an ancient-sounding piano over a short 17 seconds.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Vanilla Lyrics 20 years ago
This song reminds me for some reason of the Beatles' White Album. Listen to it and tell me it doesn't conjure up the images that you used to get when you listened to "Long, Long, Long", "Cry Baby Cry" or "Julia". A nice, pretty acoustic driven little ditty.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Smiley Lyrics 20 years ago
Kind of a dark and wandering song about a character named Smiley which suspicously seems like Billy. Here, Billy seems to be asking himself why he "dreams his life away"...

Basically, it seems to me Billy is looking at his life here and asking "Why?"

The Smashing Pumpkins – Daughter Lyrics 20 years ago
Kind of a dark and brooding song about a girl. Slow and bass-driven, this song gives rise to the image of "the girl" that Billy is always writing about, heart breaking and malicious...

In the water
Just like a snake
Someone's daughter
Hidden love, slip away

This is an Alice Cooper cover...one of his 80's songs...rather cool song, by the way. Of course, I like the Pumpkins cover of it better than the original, but hey, Alice Cooper was an amazing artist.

Another song written in anger to a girl who broke Billy's heart. Very much in the same vein as Snap (If I Could).

The Smashing Pumpkins – Try to Try Lyrics 20 years ago
Imagine the Pumpkins song "Try, Try, Try" sung in anger instead of haunting meloncholy sadness and hopelessness, and you will get this song, "Try to Try." It really serves as a nice prelude to "Try, Try, Try," which was an absolute masterpiece. This song here is early, pumped up and energetic, and I would have liked to have heard a nicely produced version of the song. From the tin-can sounding mp3 I am listening to it on, though, it had the potential to become a great song. Another rough diamond from the Pumpkins that will be forever lost in the relentless cascading waterfall of time.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Snap (If I Could) Lyrics 20 years ago
Ouch! I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of this song! This song is sung to a girl, his "one and only" who betrayed him/cut out his heart somehow. This song provides a nice, angry contrast to some of Billy's other sadder songs about having his heart ripped by "the girl" and never being able to have her.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Under Your Spell Lyrics 20 years ago
A haunting song of Billy trying to stand up against a world that is moving too quickly and threatening to pass him by. It seems to be sung to God or Jesus saying "rip anything away from me that you want...you know where I am"...

take anything you want
this is where i am

Or the song could be sung to a girl who (like just about every female character in Billy's songs) tears his heart away from him, and yet Billy can't seem to lose his feelings for her.

I am not sure which route I would rather believe (sung to God or sung to "the girl"), but nevertheless, this is a good, early Pumpkins song.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Jesus Is the Sun Lyrics 20 years ago
A disquieting song of pain, crying out to Jesus. I think we have all been lost and silently asked Jesus "Why? Why me? Why am I all alone?" This song is pretty in a haunting and pained sort of way.

...you won't miss me
like i miss you too
you'll be sorry
like i'm sorry, why
it's not easy
when you're on your own...

The Smashing Pumpkins – I Am One (Part 2) Lyrics 20 years ago
A song of loneliness...being alone in the world. Listen to this song in a dark room at night when depressed...that way, it will best make sense. It is like Billy from 1988 is reaching forward from the past to give us comfort through his own sadness.

The song kicks in nicely about midway through, and becomes triumphantly sad and haunting...always haunting...

The Smashing Pumpkins – Here's to the Atom Bomb (Machina II) Lyrics 20 years ago
Billy, I think, was really ...bitter... with the female race by the time Machina (and subsequently Machina II) came about. Years of having his heart cut open probably brought about a pleasant combination of anger, sadness, desperation, and desire for vengeance in him. Hence the concept of this song and many other late Pumpkins songs--the mysterious, beautiful (but heartless) girl who tears out (in this case, Billy's) heart, and yet, Billy can't stop feeling these emotions for her. As the lyrics to this song go:

Into the bed you hang your sling
To watch your man as he seeks relief
You cut out his heart and watch him die
So we can know you, and that you're alive

If those lyrics don't spell out Billy's message, then listen to the song a few times. As a guy, I have definitely seen the world through Billy's eyes more than once. And having your heart ripped out hurts worse than anything you could imagine. As I am sure most of you know.

The Smashing Pumpkins – East Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow! What an amazing song...these lyrics really forshadow the whole Machina concept...Glass (Billy) is young and just now trying to find himself and his direction. Not just that, but the lyrics themselves remind me of Billy's lyrics on Machina. The alternate version of this song on the Reel Time Sessions would have fit nicely on Gish. This song evokes a picture of a setting out on an unknown road at slow dawn (pun intended)...at sunrise, unsure of one's destination, lost, but with a road to follow, and time still to follow it.

The Smashing Pumpkins – With You Lyrics 20 years ago
A laid-back Pumpkins-before-they-became-the-PUMPKINS song from long, long ago. This song has inside itself the same Pumpkins' "lost-soul" spirit, but recollects a easier, less confusing time with its slightly meloncholy, Sunday-afternoon acoustic melodies. A great song for sitting, listening, and remembering all of the times gone by.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Not Worth Asking Lyrics 21 years ago
This song should have made it to Gish...it really kicks in during the "It's too late, too late..." chorus. You can really feel the emotion and anguish reverberate from this song. It definitely should have a spot on Gish, but hey, as with a million other of Billy's masterpieces, it will remain in blissful obscurity forever.

The Smashing Pumpkins – The Last Song Lyrics 21 years ago
Wurby was right, it was the last song recorded for Mellon Collie, however, Billy finished it after Mellon Collie was already in production. He said he though about keeping it around for his next album, but it was in the "Mellon Collie spirit" and thus, he released it as a B-side. Which kind of makes me sad, because the song was absolutely gorgeous, and would have made an excellent ending song for the first disc of Mellon Collie. James' "Take Me Down" simply can't compare..."The Last Song" deserved better than B-side status, but hey, at least for those of us how have heard it, it will remain with us as one of Billy's most emotional and heart-wrenching masterpieces.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Jupiter's Lament Lyrics 21 years ago
This song would have made an excellent addition to Mellon Collie. As a quite, acoustic song that is as heart-wrenching as it is beautiful, I believe that it would have been an ideal emotional stepping stone between the rage and desperation of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and the emptiness and jaded melancholy of "To Forgive." It was certainly better than James' "Take Me Down," which, although was a decent song in its own right, didn't deserve a place among the masterpieces Billy wrote.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Let Me Give the World to You Lyrics 21 years ago
This song deserved better than an nondescript spot on the internet-released Machina II (which was a great album, don't get me wrong!!). However, this song would have been an unbelievable addition to either Adore OR Machina, although I understand why Billy chose to leave it off of Adore. "Let Me Give the World to You" just doesn't quite...fit--sorry, I can't really explain it any better. But the song does seem to fit with the songs on Machina...another jaded love song in the vein of Wound. Let Me Give the World is one of Billy's best, and if you don't have Machina II, you HAVE to get it...somehow.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Lyrics 21 years ago
Has anyone ever listened to this song with headphones? Absolutely unbelievabe...the amount of strange guitar parts Billy tracked in (especially during the 2 minute "intro" to the song)...all I can say is Beatle-esque...(listen to Tomorrow Never Knows off of Revolver, and you can definitely draw parallels between the two songs).

And I don't believe that the album is about a day in the life of a teenager. I can honestly say that as a 20-something male, I still experience the same desperation and other difficult-to-describe emotions that I did five years ago. For those of us who sometimes still look at life through a jaded perspective, for those of us who still feel the urgency, meloncholy, despondency, sorrow, and rage in Billy Corgan's work, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness will forever remain an album conceptualizing life.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Shame Lyrics 21 years ago
Shame is an excellent "build-up" song...meaning it seems to build up the entire song to some dramatic climax. When the Pumpkins played it live, it was much, much better than the album version, which was already superb in my opinion. The guitar part on the album sounds like it was played slightly out of tune, but live, it just sounded...better.
