| The Felice Brothers – Ballad of Lou the Welterweight Lyrics

Great song. Is Lou a fictional character or a famous boxer? In a way, the song reminds me of Jake LaMotta, the Raging Bull, just because of his attitude towards the job at hand. Lou is a washed up fighter in his last days, trying to get paid however he can, for a sport that's passing him by. Obviously, Joey has been setup to win his final bout and Lou is trying to come off as confident and ready as ever, but during the bout, his wife/girlfriend knows something is wrong. I think the song is really about Lou waking up on the day he knows he'll fight his last fight but not wanting the only person he cares about suspect anything, and she ends up being the only person who knows him well enough to see what's going on. The line "Louie, you look bad, are you dying?" really paints a picture. |

I think this song is terrific and very simple. To me, it's about doing your own thing in a world where everybody tells you what you should be and how things ought to be. Just live and let be... I honestly love this song because I only feel like somebody who does his own thing and I keep getting crap from people who don't understand that concept, and I just feel this song is really touching. A favorite of mine. |

I think the point of a site called SongMeanings.net, would be to discuss the meaning of songs and not just tell people to buy an album. haha BUT oh well, you're a Two Gallants fan and that's all that really matters.
Anyway, I think this song is obviously about somebody who puts others down to make themselves feel better.
I love the line, "and now your statuettes are all torn down. There's no-one left for you to lean against" |

Pretty simple song... about being in love with somebody and not being about to have that person, so you find somebody to fill that void, a substitute, but deep down you know there is nothing there and it's f***ed up and cruel but it's the truth and he's bitter about what he can't have and just being honest with her. I love this song because I been in that boat and when I hear him sing and have so much passion about it, it just really touches me. Wonderful song! |

Song about a guy who really likes this girl who obviously isn't to happy about him, so she keeps leaving but coming back possibly because she can't do any better? I think the guy tries but she obviously can't see how romantic he truly is. He's out with her, crickets are chirping, the moon is full... another night, the constellations are out for all to see! He is very romantic and making all the right moves but he can't get through to her. |

| Josh Ritter – Girl In The War Lyrics

|
Simply put, I think it's a conversation of two faithful people looking towards God to solve their problems when they really ought to be realistic - for one their life - and actually fight for change rather than pray for it. To me, they both know a girl in the middle of a war and they hope and pray for GOD to protect her and argue if he doesn't to screw God, screw angels, screw all of it. Her life is in God's hand. I think both people get nowhere, but at the same time they are cried out not to risk everything on faith alone and to fight for what's right. |

|
People argue that a lot of Ritter's songs are religious based but I really think this one is sort of about somebody who is agnostic-like. I think it's about living in a world filled with war amongst people believe that there is a life after this and with that ideology, one might not respect that life as much as one who believes this is all they'll ever have. He says, "Oh Marie something tells me things just won't work out above" and goes onto talk about holding her because as his time grows short, he's nervous. Just my opinion. |

| Bob Dylan – Let Me Die in My Footsteps Lyrics

|
I hear the lines, "There's always been people that have to cause fear. They've been talking of the war now for many long years" ... can't help but think about the idea of the apocalypse and the rapture and how Christians shove it down your throat, and how Dylan is sort of like, "shut up!' because everybody is so afraid to die and so concerned about the other side that they miss out on what they have here! So he goes, "let me sleep, let me smell, and let me walk!" Just let me live NOW!!! I think the anti-war bomb shelter aspect brings a different angel to the song but I always thought it was about living and appreciating here and now what you have rather than preparing yourself for another life. |

Just heard a cover of this by Danielson. Made he want to hear Daniel's cover too. The song? Simply it's about having a lot on your mind and taking a walk to think about everything going on. It's also about that moment when you realize that everything is going to be O.K. It's a great song and I think when great performers cover Dan's music, you hear it for all it's worth. |

I'm not religious either but I really like this. One could argue that Cash's influence for this came from religion, but I'd argue that the actual context of what he's trying to say could be interpreted as very simple, as in not sitting around and watching things fall apart... to do something before time runs out. Plus, his voice is so commanding! I really love this one. |

It's not as completely original as a lot of Conor's work but I like this one. I also feel like he was listening to Piano Man by Billy Joel when he wrote this! haha I just get this feeling that this song is about a guy performing for people who reap of his sorrow and both songs sort of focus on the same elements. This isn't to say Conor is turning into Billy Joel, so need to say that. :) |

I think context of this song is powerful but overall the message is rather simple. It's about somebody's who life is so fucked up that he's saying, "It could be normal, if somebody would just give me a break!" It's like he's just looking for norm in his screwed up life. It's why he saids, "When the break man comes my way!" |

| Bob Dylan – Only a Pawn in Their Game Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
|
Without talking about Medgar Evers, the KKK, I'll talk about this song! The song is really about all the pain and hatred people felt towards Byron Beckwith, the a**hole who killed him. People wanted to rip his head off! BUT Dylan was saying, Byron was just a pawn in the middle of something bigger. Dylan was trying to say... look... the politicians and governors and sheriffs all get paid to deal with the outcry of upset citizens over things like higher taxes and unemployment, but as long as they can blame somebody else for our problems (ie: in this case, the blacks), people will never put their hatred towards the places where it belongs, authority, and authority escapes cleanly and continues to hurt us. It prevents authority from doing their job, they aren't held accountable. Dylan talks about how people are taught to shot and hate and blame others for their problems, as long as they don't blame the person whose teaching them their ways, for they may be the "real" problem for what they don't have. |

| Bright Eyes – Another Travelin' Song Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
mmm. Call me crazy, but I think this ties a lot into the meaning behind "Land Locked Blues" about feeling indifferent about your views and who you are. In "LLB", I think Conor is referring to being anti-war and against Bush, coming back home to the midwest and feeling different. The midwest being a very right-wing Conservative part of America. In this song, Another Travelin' Song, what I get out of it... is the same thing, traveling from town to town, and seeing America from all angels of rich and poor, and this country that often seems gluttent and spoiled, changes him because he's tired of fighting with himself:
Well, I guess the best that I can do now
Is pretend that I done nothing wrong
And a dream about a train that's gonna
Take me back where I belong
and
So I will find my fears and face them
I will cower like a dog
I will kick and scream
I will kneel and plead
I'll fight like hell, to hide that I'm givin' up |

| Josh Ritter – Kathleen Lyrics
|
The song is about a virgin, Kathleen, but from what I get out of it... he mets her at a party and they talk and in their conversation, she mentions that she is a virgin and he probably doesn't feel that it's the right place for her to be, so he takes her home.
I think this is a song about seeing how pure and innocent somebody can be and wanting them to stay that way... It reminds me of the last scene in the film "American Beauty", when the father (Spacey) finds out that the friends' best friend (Sorvino) isn't a slut as she puts off but a virgin and all of a sudden he doesn't want her anymore.. you know? The young girl cries thinking she isn't beautiful or wanted but he talks about how she's way too beautiful and pure and that he didn't want to disturb that.
"I know you are waiting and I know that it is not for me!" That line pretty much sums it up, it even talks about how they didn't have sex. He's saying that he's saved her a passenger seat because he's going to take her home, where it's safe...
I also think its about learning a secret about somebody. Being virgin is sort of something to be ashamed about in our society (which I feel it shouldn't be). He even talks about how she's "hip to their tricks and strong", meaning that she tries to not act so innocent (sort of like the friend in American Beauty).
I think in the end of this song, they both share her secret and he has a new respect for her.
"And the next time we meet-a new kind of hello" |

Amazing! I had forgotten about the Eels... I heard the band perform this on Jay Leno and was blown away!!! It's like an ageless classic tune, just perfect songwriting. It really is a masterpiece...
I guess this tune is nothing like them because I ran out and got the album, hoping to hear more songs like it. It's taking me awhile to get into the rest of it because the majority of it is very experimental and emo-like, unlike this tune which is just so pure and wonderful without all the bells and whistles.
Normally, I love the bells and whistles, but I'm just shocked. I've read nothing but GREAT things though, about the new album... so maybe I just need to let go and allow the music to fill me?? I know Tom Waits - one of my all-time favorite songwriters - shows up on it, so if he likes it, it has to be good! haha |

I think a very powerful part of this song, is towards the end when Conor talks about how we invade countries that are free and we're coming for you... Only to finish with a horn section that plays for a fallen soldier at thier funeral. I think that whole point, we're coming for you, and we keep losing great mean in a meaningless war. Very powerful. |

| Bright Eyes – We Are Nowhere and It's Now Lyrics
| 21 years ago

|
I guess this song means something different to everybody, but to me it's about understanding why people believe in faith, even if you don't, and at least respecting why they do. I'm not religious at all, but I have friends who that are, and I see them happy because they believe that their life is being lead by God, and since I don't want to ruin that, I just shut my mouth. To me in this song, it's as if Conor is having this conversation with somebody like himself, who doesn't believe, and Conor goes, "Why are you scard to believe in God?", then talks about why it may not be true but the point still helps people, "those stars have been dead for years, but their idea still loves on...". By the end of the song, he sort of understands where people who are religious are coming from, by putting their life in the bible, and then he compares that same approach to other things in hsi life. In referrence to the friend who gives him the silver wreath for good luck, he says, "and i don't know if it's true but i keep it for good luck". Again, it may not work, but it's the idea of believing and respecting people who do believe. |

I think if your an Adam fan, you can appreciate some of the lyrics in this song ("These lines of lightning" and "Melting under blue skies and belting out sunlight"). BUT I hate the song all a whole, for it's way to annoying bubblegum pop sound with corny lines like "Well baby I surrender To the strawberry ice cream". Adam? How low can you go, buddy? BUT again, in fairness to him, it was written for a kids movie, towards kids, and deep down... I know he's still capable of brighter moments like "Anna Begins" and "Holiday in Spain". At least it's given him and his band a stance in modern culture again. But the one mainstream band left that I can stand, may have gone too mainstream with this one. |

| Bright Eyes – True Blue Lyrics

|
Maybe because I consider myself to be a liberal, I want to believe that Conor who played "Vote for Change" to kick out George Bush, made this song, a political song about his beliefs. Have you ever heard of red and BLUE states??? I don't know how people think this is so hard to believe (???). Blue is democratic or liberal, and this song just sort of plays off the idea of everything behing blue, in my opinion, with no real point other than, "I guess the thing I'm trying to tell you is that it is best kid if you’re true blue.". It would be like, had this song been Conservative, "I had a red dream about a red star. In it I drove there in a red car. And when I got there I met a red dog with a red tongue, we had real fun. We bounced a red ball. It broke a red glass.". all the while trying to say, "I guess the thing I'm trying to tell you is that it is best kid if you’re true red". I can see how people think that it was written for a child because of how the melody sounds, but it's just very lighthearted and fun. IMO |

I do think it's ashame... reading posts here from people who are calling this song garbage. I do think the true genius behind it was how orginal was. Everything from the band playing around with their voices ("Full speak ahead") to their sounds of submaries... just very artistic and orginal.

It's about being pushed aside and wanting somebody to care about you. The word "Apogee" which is the highest point of something sort of explains where you once were. Not really, in the last part of the song about Jesus, he basically states that you can't change the past, unless you are willing to change yourself in the process.
But the other two passages about Cobain and Hilter, about God knowing that he would be selfish and not get the job done.

| Neil Young – Rockin' in the Free World Lyrics

|
I think this song is about living in a world where you are free to speak your mind. Whether it's the injustice of a group of people, the poor getting poorer, or fighting an unncessary war... what's great about living in a free country is our voice can be heard, and the stronger we make it, the more of an impact it has. He's saying, use that right, keep up fighting, keep on rocking in the free world.
This is great especially at a time, when a war in Iraq is going on and anybody who questions Bush was called a Communist or anti-America. Don't let them get you down, America is great because of freedom of speech... so keep screaming, keep rocking in the free world. |
