| ABBA – The Winner Takes It All Lyrics
|
I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think continuing to use a metaphor throughout the whole song is necessarily a bad thing--"Stranger Song" by Leonard Cohen, for example, weaves in and out of a gambling metaphor in exactly the same way.
However! I feel like I need to defend "What more can I say/Rules must be obeyed", because I feel like that line is the crux of the whole song: the narrator wants to be able to face her ex and make it clear how much pain she is in, but the unwritten rules of relationships don't allow her to do that; she has to put on a cheerful facade and actually apologizes for reminding him that she's hurt. Why? Because, no matter what she might want, there are rules governing breakups.
That's my take, and it's not as though it's the best lyric of all time, but overall I'd say it works much better than it ought to. |

| The Streets – Empty Cans Lyrics

|
It's not a proverb or idiom. He is surrounded by empty beer cans because all he's been doing is drinking because his life is falling apart. He says that it's not his fault (and then that it is his fault) that he's depressed and angry and drinking, which is why the cans are there. I hope that helped! |

The guitar and distortion towards the climax of the song are nothing less than masterstrokes. What a fucking good record. |

| Jimmy Ray – Are You Jimmy Ray? Lyrics

History will show Jimmy Ray to be one of those seminal artists, like Big Star, Patti Smith and the Velvet Underground, who may have been heard by few, but will inspire everyone who has heard him in their subsequent work. Here, he openly challenges the corporate elite that has tried to pigeonhole him into playing a type, rejecting their efforts outright. |

It's very much like that part of the New Testimant, in which Jesus says "I was hungry, and you did not feed me. I was thirsty and you did not give me water. I was tired and you did not give me shelter. For what you did to the least of men, you also did to me."
I think that that is a much more powerful construct of God than the anti-gay anti-sex anti-feminist God that the religious right wants people to believe in. Very good song |

I personally think that as origionally recorded, the song is more or less very pretty filler; as Ben Folds does it, it stands alone and is much more fleshed out and lovely. It may be unthinkable to prefer a cover to the Beatles, but I'd go with Ben Folds's reading every time, and I say that as an avid Beatles fan. |

Wow you guys. Way to scream "Dawson's Creek". I really like this song, and did long before I ever saw an episode of the show. It's very good in and of itself. |

My favorite part is that at the beginning, the band doesn't follow him and he just breaks out laughing and has to start over. It's so genuine. |

I have a copy of this song on my computer, but I have not been able to find any record of him recording it anywhere--not on Amazon, not on CDDB, not anywhere I can find on Google. Any thoughts? |

I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know about what it has to say, but I read at Rolling Stone that it was improvised. And they probably wouldn't like just because it was improvised in the movie. I believe it.

I like the song...but I'm very confused about the opening, with the kid listening to music. Is it something about the theme of the album? |

I had heard this song at parties and never really thought anything of it. Then I heard Danger Mouse's version, which mixes it with "Helter Skelter" and was blown completely away. Because the beat was so engaging, it really made the lyrics all the more palpable, and I think it's a phenominal recording. |

From what I've heard, in the late 70's when this song came out most men were still in the closet. YMCA's were a very common place for gay men to rendez-vous. |

| James Taylor – Something In The Way She Moves Lyrics

How has no one commented on this song? It is decidedly my famous James Taylor song and one of the most compelling love songs I know of. It is about what a emotional mess he is--lower than low--and then when he's with her, it's all gone, and that's all he needs.
That said, the "Every now and then" part goes before the "It isn't what she's got to say" part...and then the chorus repeats. |

I don't hate rap for being rap. I think that Eminem's "Stan" was one of the more interesting songs of the past few years. And I love the Beastie Boys (though they're not really authentic rap), and Public Enemy. But come on! |

I also first heard the song in "Kill Bill, Vol 1", and I thought that it was used incredibly effectively. When I saw it, the audience was dead silent during the credits as it played, a very effective song in its own right made positively dangerous. |

This song is woefully poo. And I don\'t really care that it\'s innappropriate and preteens are singing it--\"Still Not a Player\", \"Too Close\" and \"Touch It\" were all the rage when I was in middle school. But at least those songs actually were blatently about sex, instead of using a metaphor that was probably as unoriginal thirty years ago as it is now. You say this is a good song to dance to? So are the Beastie Boys, or Michael Jackson, or even fucking DMX. At least they\'re able to come up with lyrics that aren\'t utter tripe. |

Whoa...how has no one commented on this song? It's a really short, simple song, but it's very effective. It''s obviously about cunnilingus--but it's in a very nonsexual way. I really like this song--as well as the rest of the album.
Do you think a guy could write a song about fellatio? I doubt it. |

| Puff Daddy – I'll Be Missing You Lyrics

I agree with sbhoiu.
This is not a good record. The lyrics are all right, but the main emotional core of the song comes from the background music, "Every Breath You Take" by the Police, one of the most beloved songs of the 80's. I think that him doing another of his sample-songs was tacky--even more so because the chorus is almost directly lifted from the original. If my best friend had been murdered, I would have written a song about him all by myself. |

I can't believe no one has commented on this song. I'd say it's probably the greatest song of the punk era. It's destruction/alienation theme seems to forshadow "Fight Club" by 25 years. Truely, this is what rock is meant to be.
"I am the world's forgotten boy"--now that's a fucking good line. |

To me, the song is about a woman who deep down knows that her man is having an affair--he isn't as attentive, he's distracted--in a way it has BECOME a long-distance relationship. And she sounds like she's willing to forgive and forget if he's attentive and thoughtful again. |
