For me this is a reference to the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. There seems to be links between tarot cards and events from that day - "Time against the Tower" and "The Hermit against the lovers" - Any other comments from anyone? Would be interested to hear...! |

One of the rare tracks where all 3 members of the band get the "lyrics by" credit. I think it's a celebration of how tight the band are, especially when "Signals" was a breakout album - a change of direction for Rush. |

Ditto NEMT'S posting. From the synopsis of the Ghost Rider book, Neil Peart was contemplating life and his own death after his double tragedy. He decided on motion instead. |

Many songs on "Hold Your Fire" are written around a central theme of instinct, inner feelings and primal urges. In particular, some of the songs (this one included) seem to address how people let things slide for the sake of a quiet life or a clear conscience. Check out "Second Nature", "Turn The Page" and "Open Secrets" |

Hey! - Ledskynyrd - You still out there mudwhistle? Got nothing else to bad mouth Rush with? Guess not, simply because they are the best band ever. Come on - let's hear from you again - i miss you!
Thank you |

I agree. Neil Peart is 100% right with his notion that traditional love songs are dangerous and very misleading about what love is. check out songs like "Different Strings" and "Ghost Of A Chance" for similar lyrics. |

I think the verses about the writer relate to Ernest Hemingway. The song as a whole seems to highlight the agony of not being able to perform, or deliver any more, that which once came so easily. Ben Mink's electric violin is beautiful! |

I'm with NEMT on this one. The song is about the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. There is an anger in this song saying "OK - so Communism has ended. What about the years of heartbreak, fear, suffering and damage? What are we gonna do about that? |

Neil has presented an alternative slant on the love song concept before in "Different Strings", when the message was something like "no need to explain it, no need for fancy meatphors etc". I think this is a similar message that says "we can find love, despite all the shit that goes on". Neil also uses the song to air his disdain for mystical and divine forces and to push through the notion that life is an exercise in chance or luck. |

Can't really figure out the true message in the song but Neil Peart makes some great observations - "Illusions are painfully shattered right where discovery starts" - isn't that the truth eh? |

Love this song - big big thumb slapping bass towards the end. For me the song is there at the end of "Moving pictures" deliberately. It is announcing Rush's change of direction and letting the fans know something new is around the corner (i.e. "Signals" and Grace Under Pressure"). |

This is my all-time favourite Rush track. Obviously not for the subject matter, but for the sound. The guitar solo for me is Alex's best, it sounds like his guitar is actually crying. Geddy's vocals do the same thing and if anyone has a copy of the "Through The Camera Eye" video, Neil's look at the end of the song. All these things are testament to the loss suffered. |

From the Ghost Rider period, when Neil found himself with a shot at "romance" again. The phrase "A secret touch on the heart" came from a book that Neil read during this time on his travels (shamed to say I can't remember title or author just now!). |

Similar to other postings really - the annoying beauty of hindsight. Denied and accepted in the song ("I'm not looking back..." and "I let my past go too fast"). Promising to make more of life and experiences, then finding yourself making the same promises again! |

Something in this song tells me to not always live life as an exercise in consequence - stop asking "What if...?", otherwise you won't do anything.
Other aspects of this song seem to point towards atheism, and the absence of any all powerful entity deciding our fate. |

I think this is Neil's opinion that traditional love songs are dangerous - they fill peoples' minds with all these images of happy life and it's not always like that. "Nothing to explain, it's a part of us to be found within a song" seems to be all it takes! |

Neil lived and worked in London for a while and this could be his take on things at the time. I love this song a great deal - Neil seems to be commenting on peoples' ability to never be satisfied, regardless of how much they try to change things. Geddy's vocals on this song are amazing. |

A look into the background from which a lot of people belong? Suburban life can often lend itself to a desire to head for the "bright lights" and somewhere where there is a bit more life. I am English, but am sure it's the same everywhere! |

Great song highlighting the ease in which one can become a musical celebrity! - People exist (agents and such) that will blow sunshine up your arse and hype you out of all comprehension. I don't know who the fool is in this - the would be sucker or the consumer for listening to the "superconductor" in the first place. |

For me this song represents Neil's dealing with fame and retaining his connection with the fans. He took exception to people thinking they knew him just because he knew what he looked like. I believe the message in the song is one of "we're not going anywhere - just give us a bit of space!". The words in the song can be read by every Rush fan as a personal message from Neil. |
