my favorite thing is all the mumbling and vocal improvising jeremy does. because of this there are any number of interpretations one can get out of the things he says: for instance when I sing this song LOUD in my car... i sing it as "where where you? wanted me chained to this memory. we could have been the last time. show me the sigh, this side of chance. hold tomorrow with one foot in and one foot out?" that is to say i'm sure any of us know what its like to string along (or be strung along by) someone. when you're the one being strung along you can almost hear the subtle contempt held by the other persons apathy whispering... "are you strong enough, pitiful boy?" as if to say "if you just hang in there a bit longer maybe this could be something..." but of course from the author's perspective, "we could've (or rather should've) been the LAST time," we went through this. from the other perspective... that of the "stringer," we realize it is not apathy that does this. we sit with "one foot in and one foot out," unsure of the next step. perhaps having been hurt in the past and unwilling to fully commit. either way the part where he really loses and belts it out is the same from either perspective. such a good song |

Also Kurt masked the meaning of the song by changing the words to "smell HER" on you, and a couple of other snippets here and there about being on tour and having to make sacrifices while they both worked in successful bands. Those lyrics are available in the demo version that came with the box set. some of those include the lines - Living all my time alone Dreaming outside, And I got this dream, Where I have a girl like you, I’ll go outta my way to make you a deal, I’ll wet my bed, I’ll wear high heels, I’ll go outta my way to prove I still, Smell him on you. and various other lines about plane rides and having "less time at home." I Can only assume there were accusations of infidelity on tour, as Bikini Kill ascended to fame... and at the time Nirvana was a go-nowhere band of poor guys in Aberdeen, occasionally living on the streets of Seattle. |

An unsent letter was uncovered after Kurt's death (actually I may be wrong... it may have turned during the research process for the book Come As You Are or Heavier Than Heaven), where Kurt addresses Tobi by saying, "Every song on this record [In Utero] is not about you. No, I am not your boyfriend. No, I don't write songs about you, except for 'Lounge Act,' which I do not play, except when my wife is not around." | |

If you find this song on YOUTUBE, there is a clip of ATDI playing (pre-members of the "classic" lineup) playing in an auditorium at the University of Texas at El Paso. Cedric and Jim mention "we have a friend named Brad.. and every morning his dad wakes him up by saying 'Bradley.... Bradley... it's time to wake up, Bradley. Wake up wake up Bradley." This song is super old (written before they were even actively recording/touring I believe), and showcases Cedric/Jim's young sense of humor at the time. Cedric was in a number of humorous punk bands in the El Paso region before ATDI. |

| I think it's clear that the omission of "there's no restraining order to keep me from you..." and it being change to "we outside never win," in the "THIS STATION IS NON-OPERATIONAL" version proves once again that people who take ATDI lyrics literally are dumb/silly. The song (even in its original form) is clearly about an artist who obsesses over the popularity of another artist. Perhaps someone younger from the same circle of friends/scene (hence... this is their INITIATION). There is a lot of stalker/violent imagery, but I'm pretty sure that's just supposed to be an insult to this younger person, rather than to be taken as a literal portrayal of events. | |

WOW i'm way late on the bus for this ultra popular song.. but here goes. The meaning of this song is way obvious and is one of their most straight-foward yet somehow must misunderstood tracks. It's 100% about Cedric (and probably Omar's too) feelings about walking away from ATDI. It's also about having said feelings while on tour.. having to be in close quarters with people (mainly jim) who you dont really relate to anymore. Most obvious points: "Cut away (is what cedric and omar would eventually do). Send transmission to the one armed scissor (a one armed scissor has no function. send transmission... no communication... you could say 'the one armed scissor' is the band itself... or even jim ward specifically) [we] banked on [a] memory [but found] mumified circuitry (jim had once been kicked out of atdi... but was soon taken back when they had very dramatic problems with his replacement... when he came back... were things still the same? were they still the same people who grew up together and came up into fame together? they tried to relive the fun they had with jim... they banked on a memory to make them happy... it didnt help.. they only found mumified circuitry... the same old problems) Sputnik sickles found in the seats (again... more of the same old... you try to build something new... you find evidence that youve done NOTHING new.. and have simply relived mistakes you shoulda learned from the 1st time. you climb aboard this space craft... this tour van... and you find the sputnik sickles... the remains of a long forgoten and irrelevant spacecraft.) A self-destruct sequence [because] this station is non-operational. (Obviouuuuuus) Unknown origin, is this the comfort of being afraid (to break up... to try to start again from the begining... is it better to be safe and unhappy... or to walk and possibly fade into oblivion) Solar eclipse.... [we'll] block out the vultures as they wait (lots of ppl.. especially back home were already talking trash. they waited... possibly even prayed for ATDI's eventual doom. They hafta be sure theyre walking away for the right reasons... not because the vultures got to them... they'll solar eclipse and block them out) A trillion sighs away (after so many arguments your only response becomes this sigh... you refuse to continue) will you get this letter? (do you get the message we are unhappy... OR communicating with home... asking for advice....) Jagged pulp sliced in my veins, i write to remember (drugs... vague memories of what's actually happening... homesick... you write not only to communicate with those you love... but to try to piece together what's happening to you... out there on that road... in a van with people you no longer particularly like). |

I grew up with some of the members of ATDI, and shared stages with them in my own bands as a drummer in the El Paso scene. Ever since In/Casino/Out came out... I've heard this song sung live as their final song. I didnt know sarah or laura, but I knew who they were, and saw The Fall On Deaf Ears open for Propagandhi, as well as the bassist for my band... Miss Leah Loyd, was once in a riot grrrl band called the Glitter Girls... which pre-ceded The Fall On Deaf Ears, and sarah and laura's other band, Rope. The first time I ever this song it was at a live show in California (I was living in Berkely at the time... and found out home-town heroes ATDI were playing Gilman... so I decided to show up and say hi. I remember Jim being like "woah what are you doing here." Like I said we were never super close but we all knew each other in the scene, so they didnt really know I had moved). I heard the final chrous sung as "Strum this fucking harp, we were struck by their chords to the heart. Yes this is Laura... there's no turning back... this is for Sarah. But you can't get the best of us now." Without knowing any of the other words I knew exactly what this song was about and let go of a couple of those silent-solitary cartoon teardrops. |
