Radiohead – How to Disappear Completely Lyrics | 10 years ago |
this song makes me feel insignificant in a good way. we could all do with a little reality check in this self-obsessed world |
Radiohead – Nude Lyrics | 10 years ago |
i've never thought about the lyrics being from that viewpoint but it makes perfect sense, and yes it is so emotional that the first time i heard this song i sobbed uncontrollably |
Radiohead – Weird Fishes/Arpeggi Lyrics | 10 years ago |
highly addictive indeed, i often think the second half is the best sound i have ever heard, everything comes together so perfectly as he "escapes" |
Radiohead – Down Is the New Up Lyrics | 10 years ago |
nothing it seems is as it should be in our cosy western society. we are lied to on a daily basis to the extent that nearly all of us have absolutely no idea what is actually going on and being done in our name. this song though, as with many others of theirs, at least states that the world may be going to shit but we can still live out our lives with love for those around us, and for ourselves. we are not to blame, we've been manipulated and distracted for generations... |
Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics | 10 years ago |
rather than being a beggar, he's probably an old veteran hobbling down a busy street, either ignored or tutted at as he blocks the path of those who are too busy. a lack of financial support (a meagre war pension) could result in such a man dying in poverty. very touching... |
Thom Yorke – Analyse Lyrics | 11 years ago |
in rolling reams across the screen, in algebra |
Thom Yorke – Twist Lyrics | 11 years ago |
i agree that's what he's saying. i also think this song refers to "operation twist" which is a quantitive easing policy of the us federal reserve. in simple terms it's a policy to inject hundred of billions of us dollars (created out of thin air) into the economy to kickstart growth, the only problem being it only really benefits wall street and hasn't helped the economy at all. this explains the lyric. |
Radiohead – Where Bluebirds Fly Lyrics | 12 years ago |
he's actually singing "little birds in the trees" i found a website that separated out the vocals and it's quite clear |
Radiohead – I Am a Wicked Child Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"mother mary come to me for i am a wicked child i've sinned and i am so confused for i am a wicked child i am a wicked child i am the devil's son and i wish i could be good i walk a crooked mile yeah i wish i could be good i wish i could be good if i could have kept on the straight and narrow if i could have kept on the straight and narrow but god broke your heart god broke your heart now i wake up in the night he's tugging at my arms and legs like i was a marionette send baby jesus to radiate his light to radiate his light" the lyrics to this song seem to be more literal than most, right from the beginning we know that the narrator is a child, maybe one that has been led to believe they're wicked. with no reference point, an innocent child will assume they are wicked when told. why else "i have sinned and i'm so confused"? and then to be told you are the devil's son would be devastating. despite all efforts to be good, walking a crooked mile, something has gone dreadfully wrong. having turned to mother mary to no avail after god has broken your heart, who else can you turn to but jesus? |
Radiohead – These Are My Twisted Words Lyrics | 12 years ago |
totally agree, sums it up |
Radiohead – Bangers + Mash Lyrics | 12 years ago |
if thom yorke writes "the pyramid is power, they're changing by the hour", it can only be about one thing and that aint food! |
Radiohead – 4 Minute Warning Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"stepping over heads" provokes such dark imagery even for thom yorke. how much worse could it get than being in a field covered with dead bodies and you're trying to escape? |
Radiohead – Lotus Flower Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"a bird that's flown into my room" |
Thom Yorke – Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses Lyrics | 12 years ago |
yeah definitely better lyrics for the debut performance |
Thom Yorke – Cymbal Rush Lyrics | 12 years ago |
the use of the nursery rhyme line is very interesting. he talks earlier about being turned away as though there isn't enough room here are the words, repetitive i know, but the last part is what's important: There were ten in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were nine in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were eight in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were seven in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were six in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were five in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were four in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were three in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There were two in a bed And the little one said "Roll over, roll over" So they all rolled over And one fell out There was one in a bed And the little one said "Good night!" this creates the scenario of one ending up with everything |
Thom Yorke – Twist Lyrics | 12 years ago |
it sounds like he's saying "they won't give your money back" around 4:10 |
Radiohead – Separator Lyrics | 12 years ago |
i think he might be saying "i've a hook in my mouth". it would make sense given the later lyric of "i'm a fish now out of water" as if he's been yanked back to reality from his ideal dream state. |
Radiohead – Separator Lyrics | 12 years ago |
i don't think it is about drugs but i do think we should all embrace our own interpretations, at the very least an exchange of ideas is a healthy thing |
Radiohead – Separator Lyrics | 12 years ago |
really good post. the name indeed provides a clue to the meaning of the lyrics and i agree it's about the separation of his ideals and the reality which keeps getting in the way and refuses to change. This album has a buddhist feel to it and given thom's reference to yoga at an "atoms for peace" gig, and the hints in his lyrics, i would say thom is going down the meditative/buddhist route as a human being, all the better for the rest of us who like to follow his career and life. the realisation that the only weapon we have left is to wake up together is not lost on him. |
Radiohead – A Punchup at a Wedding (No No No No No No No No) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
there is rarely enough discussion of radiohead's political values yet their lyrics scream out to be seen in this context, especially on the albums since the bends. interestingly, with the release of in rainbows we see a different, dare i say optimistic, slant to thom's writing which has accelerated with tkol. have we seen the end of the angry political phase and the beginnings of a new phase with love, acceptability and human collective consciousness at it's core? |
Radiohead – The Daily Mail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I'm sure it begins "the moonies are up on the mountain", a reference to the religous sect. |
Radiohead – The Amazing Sounds of Orgy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i don't get how people can read things like this and still say radiohead are not political |
Radiohead – The Amazing Sounds of Orgy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
in the true sense of the word |
Radiohead – Fast-Track Lyrics | 13 years ago |
it's now known he's singing "little birds in the trees" |
Radiohead – Separator Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i'm pretty sure he's singing "love was just your number" as in so in love with being in love |
Radiohead – The Present Tense Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i am certain this will be included in the batch of songs (several eps?) that will follow tkol. |
Radiohead – Codex Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i totally agree with the buddhist angle, a lot of his unrecorded songs recently touch on this (present tense, skirting on the surface, open the floodgates) his new found inner peace shines through on this album. |
Radiohead – Little by Little Lyrics | 13 years ago |
agreed |
Radiohead – Separator Lyrics | 13 years ago |
the very last lines should be "when at last you get it, wake me up" this is the trunk (this whole album is about the trunk) saying it will sprout limbs (more music) once we work it out. |
Radiohead – Skirting on the Surface Lyrics | 14 years ago |
When we realise we have only to dive and we're out of here We're just skirting on the surface We have only to click our fingers and we disappear We're just skirting on the surface Dull eyes trying to pull you through the ice Being drawn to the ledge When we realize that once we're broken nothing mends We're just skirting on the surface When we realize we're only held in suspension 'Til someone comes along and shakes us As the parallel lines cross the fingers like a web Will you dive-bomb the surface? Dull eyes trying to pull you through the ice Being drawn to the ledge When we realize that once we're broken nothing mends We're just skirting on the surface Musically, one of his most beautiful songs. Lyrically, he seems to be talking about the superficiality of life, a constant Thom theme, and how fragile this reality really is. In fact, it's just a state of mind as is escape from it to a more meaningful, spiritual realm (not a religious reference though!). |
Radiohead – These Are My Twisted Words Lyrics | 14 years ago |
haha of course, if you want to take it literally... |
Radiohead – The National Anthem Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think that's Thom saying "what's wrong?" |
Alice Cooper – Lay Down and Die, Goodbye Lyrics | 14 years ago |
isn't it "tell me why you broke me?" i love these first two albums, totally anarchic and free |
Clinic – Come Into Our Room Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think the line is "as snug as bugs inside your love" and not a smuggler's box Wonderful lyrics expressing that lovely cosy feeling when you're all wrapped up in winter with the one you love. |
Radiohead – These Are My Twisted Words Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the second line is definitely "went off the roof still walking" |
Thom Yorke – Skirting on the Surface Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i think he sings "when we realise we have only to dive and we're out of here" this song seems to be about the superficiality of life, how there are far more riches awaiting us under the surface of our infotainment world. |
Thom Yorke – The Eraser Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"my fairy tale arab princess, be careful how you respond" could this be anything to do with princess diana? |
Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The lyrics remind me of holosonic technology. Here's an excerpt from an article: "What has long been rumored within the conspiracy and ufology communities went public a few years ago (though a variant of the technology was discussed for use even earlier during the Waco siege) and is quickly infiltrating the market of ideas and real world applications. Holosonic sound technologies project a high pitched directional beam of ultrasound audio to an exact location, usually where the target audience’s head will be. The victim will hear a voice, music, advertisement, or whatever the beams controller would like, inside their head. No-one around them would be able to hear it, unless they could drag someone to that exact spot and hope the beam was still trained on the same location." I think Thom had this in mind when he wrote the lyrics. |
Radiohead – Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it's about having a love so strong that even the end of the world holds no fear. |
Radiohead – The Amazing Sounds of Orgy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the current recession is just the beginning. when the banks actually DO collapse completely then we'll see the sort of chaos this song refers to. |
Radiohead – 15 Step Lyrics | 14 years ago |
but they haven't ended up where they started, have they? |
Thom Yorke – The Hollow Earth Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"lost in a maze, forgetting" evokes the feel from 2001's Amnesiac with the crying minotaur. |
Thom Yorke – The Present Tense Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"this dance is like a weapon of self defence against the present tense" seems to imply someone not wanting to face up to what's happening, the dance is a distraction from reality or "the now". keeping it light and frothy again would deny any real contemplation or reflection on our existence and where we are collectively heading. |
Thom Yorke – Iluvya Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it's hard to hear it properly but i think he's saying "certainly a good album" very fast |
Thom Yorke – The Drunkk Machine Lyrics | 14 years ago |
yes i agree a literal interpretation works well. my take would be a reference to the drink culture in general, youths out of control on a saturday night in city centres. idiots spitting nonsense, talking in tongues, everyone seeing swivelling heads through a haze of alcohol. splitting hairs, ie. arguing and fighting over nothing in particular. |
Thom Yorke – Cymbal Rush Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"all the rooms renumbered, losers turned away, shouldn't turn away" i believe this refers to less fortunate people trying to escape the floods and being turned away from hotels and houses through lack of money, or whatever the currency in such an emergency may be. people would naturally want to seek shelter and shouldn't be excluded on such superficial grounds but of course they would be, and left to their own fate. |
Radiohead – Reckoner Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i believe the reckoner of the title to refer to the capitalist system we now see virtually covering the whole planet, sweeping up as much money from the bottom to feed the unlimited greed at the top. "can't take it with you" is highlighting the point that although wealth appears to have some value in this life, it counts for nothing once we are dead. he then switches to tell us we are not to blame for the bitter sweet distractors, ie. the many temptations that bombard us all every day through infotainment etc., making it hard to resist handing over our hard-earned wages for the latest distraction just to see the money sucked up to the top again. we are all part of the system and yet we are told we are a cut above the rest and can make the "big time" with just a little more effort - it's meaningless and we drift apart from each other, selfishly believing the mantra, separating "like ripples on a blank shore", all alone and unable to see we are all in the same boat. life would be so much easier if we could be taken with those who appear to achieve success. by dedicating this song to all human beings, thom is allowing us to realise that we have ALL been sucked in. |
TV on the Radio – Dry Drunk Emperor Lyrics | 17 years ago |
firstly, it is about bush and not other leaders, the lyrics are specific about that and secondly the "he's been standing naked for a while" alludes to the "emperor has no clothes" rather than dylan. stunning lyrics and how refreshing to not have the message wrapped up in metaphors - so blatant! |
Clinic – Welcome Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"see our lady with her shawl" should be "sick old lady in a shawl" |
Clinic – Pet Eunuch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think instead of "use the best", he sings "he's a bastard". What do others think? |
