Wow, I wish I had known all this when my brother showed me this album (I didn't even listen to it at that moment). It was the last weekend I ever saw him... He comitted suicide two weeks later, a year ago today. The Adore album was still on repeat when he was found five days later... Ah well, it probably wouldn't have made any difference. I really love your explanation of the sudden end, Tamy. It kind of bothered me a little sometimes, but I always thought there must have been a reason. It all makes sense now. |

Ik hoorde het voor het eerst tijdens een uitzendig van Plaza op Radio 2. Spinvis speelde het er met alleen een akoestische gitaar, prachtig! We played this song at my brother's funeral. He committed suicide a little over three months ago. He often listened to 'Damnation' with one of his friends, and that friend suggested we should play a song from that album. We chose this song, and played it after my mother read a story from the dutch writer Toon Tellegen, from the book 'Ze sliepen nog' (They were still asleep). 'Sleep my child', those lyrics, it was so appropriate(? I don't know if that's the right word for it) and so, so beautiful. I'm listening to 'Damnation' at this very moment. As loud as possible, it's twilight, and the whole album is so amazingly beautiful. |

My French isn't all that good, but I really love this song. I know the Dutch translation ('Liefde van later', translated by Lennaert Nijgh and performed by Herman van Veen), so I can try and say something about its meaning. Basically it's about two people being together for years and even though some things have changed, they still love each other very much and they're now in this strong, deep, lasting relationship. Probably it's way more complicated, but neither my French, nor my English are good enough to explain it any better than this. |
