| Team Dresch – Uncle Phranc Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This was my favorite song for a really long time. Still love it to bits. No band in the world like TD. | |
| Team Dresch – Song for Anne Bannon Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| And I think that may be lady cops? | |
| Henry's Dress – Target Practice Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I fixed it for you :) | |
| The Start – Shakedown! Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Clearly it's about the system and the media pushing stuff to shape us. The song is an encouragement to question all these norms and ideas that we're told to believe without reason. Great song. | |
| Bee Gees – I Started a Joke Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| What Mary_jo, musiclover and yamyamyam said are all related. Also very much the concept I have in mind. I thought it was about a possibly human-made virus like HIV, or what Hitler had in mind, which would be a "joke" to any sane human being. And how one's deeds or words can cause so much pain to a greater mass and what could happen when life is taken so lightly when we have so little control over the consequences of our actions. | |
| Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I agree with EphemeralFortress. Some people know they have the potential to be creative and out there but just don't, usually because of the fear that life will pass without knowing what you're doing or whatever reason they might have. To me this could be an issue of control. Amanda Palmer knows a lot about loneliness, I can tell in her lyrics. Plus, not every song that mentions a needle is about drugs. |

| Guano Apes – Open Your Eyes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's not a Yes cover, have you even listened to the Yes song? I don't suppose, because you would have realized that both music and lyrics are completely different. Just because a song shares the same title with another does not mean it's a cover. Well maybe the Goldfinger song is also a cover, what do you say? :) Nic explanation, bworca. |

| Help She Can't Swim – Hospital Drama Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think I'll go with sickness and fear... | |
| Help She Can't Swim – Hospital Drama Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| great great song, I thought it was about sickness and fear and how sick inside i makes you feel. but now that I read the lyrics in full, I think it might be about alcohol/drug abuse. not sure though. | |
| Go Sailor – Fine Day for Sailing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Great lyrics, love Rose Melberg. | |
| Tiger Trap – you're sleeping Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I always understood the lyrics like this: "we need to know you're not awake just in case you turn at me, it would be nice to say back to me" "I left a note under your pillow..." (instead of I love to go under your pillow...) Anyway, this really is my song :) |
|
| Bambix – Butch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It's story, doesn't need explanation. Very good song with unique Bambix style. | |
| Operation Ivy – Plea For Peace Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think this song is about "power", authority and other system values that affect our lives and how "authorized" people are using that power to satisfy themselves while they are simply weak and passive in their own lives. I think this was my first Op Ivy song, thus I love it. | |
| Operation Ivy – Knowledge Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is probably the only Op Ivy song I never ever liked, don't even understand why it is so "popular". | |
| Common Rider – Midnight Passenger Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
And I think it's "54-47", not "56-47". Also should be "halfway under in bars like a ship that was sinking down" and "and even if we can't find land" |
|
| Common Rider – Midnight Passenger Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I just thought about this now, and I might be wrong but this song could actually be related to the time when Jesse tried to become a monk. What I can't figure out is if it about when he left his older life or the monk life; or both. Greatest Common Rider song in my opinion and a really really good tune in general. | |
| Operation Ivy – The Crowd Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Operation Ivy was always about Unity, and that's what this song is about; how we lack unity. OpIvy was my favourite band for such a long time and this song was the greatest for me during that era. Still love Jesse's voice and Common Rider rocks as well. | |
| Dance Hall Crashers – Cricket Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'm with Brennakat. And I think the person dying might be a boyfriend/girlfiend or just someone really close. The song is about death in a relatively positive way. The writer of the song is trying to comfort the dying person saying he/she won't be alone and won't get bored, which probably is the scariest thing about death. And whatever may come after death, they will figure out what to do next. Eventually the writer is going to die too and they will be together to figure it out. The song is full of hope and understanding, that's what I like about it so much. | |
| Team Dresch – Song for Anne Bannon Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Same here, love that part. I think this was on the Free To Fight comp, right? | |
| Team Dresch – Remember Who You Are Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song has the most beautiful and incredible lyrics I've ever heard. It's just perfect. There's something about Team Dresch that is really innovative, yet real and the lyrics are the best proof of that. Yeah it is about being who you are basically but I don't like trying to comment on really poetic lyrics. This is certainly soo poetic that you can feel the feeling and frustration they had while writing the song. You get the feeling and the meaning when you read or listen to it. Every line of this song makes my heart hurt and beat faster. | |
| Team Dresch – Don't Try Suicide Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is definately not about Jody and her girlfriend fucking around, don't be a moron now.. It's about depression, fear of death and paranoia and how her girlfriend gives her comfort even though she can't make it go away. | |
| Julie Ruin – Stay Monkey Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is one of the most amazing songs of all time. I love the simplicity and beauty of it. | |
| Le Tigre – Eau d'Bedroom Dancing Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Well after reading all the interpretations of the song, I can say it's either the dancing or the bdsm. We can't know Hanna's personal life and she might as well have written a song about bdsm and if she did, I think it's beautifully structured. And if it's just about dancing alone without taking any bullshit from others, it still has a great structure and feel. | |
| Lush – Hypocrite Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think a friend of the singer stole her boyfriend and although she hates her for that, she can't really justify herself on her mind either. Maybe becus she's not much different from the other girl, or maybe becuz the girl was right to do it. | |
| Lush – Demystification Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think this song is about general activism and how it seems to everyone else out of it. the singer is an outsider and she sees all the "mystery" and "importance" put on these things by the people in them, but she doesn't quite understand what is going on, cos it's not even clear enough. this whole thing maybe about one special occation, but I dont really know what could've happened in Britain then. But the last lines offer the idea that it's a general thing, people should state a clear goal when doing something, not just unclear information. | |
| Lush – Ladykillers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Lush is such an under-rated band, they seriously rocked, well, most of the time... And this song is one of my favs considering it's such a good tune and the lyrics are also grrrl powered and so true. And I read at wikipedia that the "blondie" part of this song was a response to a weezer song. Appearantly she dated the former Weezer bassist for a while which led to some ugly lyrics to a weezer song. |

| Tilt – Addiction Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| sorry for the 2 entries. and it's the beautys not the beauties. I noticed it like 2 seconds later. my brain slows down at night. sorry. | |
| Tilt – Addiction Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| clearly about an abusive friend who is addicted to stealing. love the song, really nice melody. if you like tilt, I say you'll like the beauties too. | |
| Tilt – Addiction Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| clearly about an abusive friend who is addicted to stealing. love the song, really nice melody. if you like tilt, I say you'll like the beauties too. | |
| Sleeper – Lie Detector Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think this one's about how insecure men always suspect that beautiful and/or smart women are evil. They love her image or her brains but they keep thinking that she's planning something bad underneath. Men's insecurity stems from the woman being so beautiful, which means to them that she might be cheating on him or using him for something. Or it might stem from the woman being so intelligent, which means to them that they don't have control over her and she can suppress them or change things to her liking without the man even noticing. So the songwriter says, you're a grown man baby, just stop it, dont find a thousand cliches to scold the women in your life, your head works in a wrong way, you have too many complexes. And this song is so beautiful. I love the English accent too. |

| Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| And yeah, I too think it's the prettiest song on the album.. | |
| Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think it's a dead or dying person talking about her life. Love (defined love), happiness, hunger (greed?), anger (I like the riot grrrl idea) are the things she was told she should have, to be modern, to have a perfect life. She bought a TV to get closer to the world but she didn't cos it's a lie, an illusion. The hole of the donut is the size of the entire world in her eyes, which is pretty much small. But if you move it closer to your eyes, it's much like a goggle that you fit your world into. She did all that and yet, yeah, she still felt incomplete cos there's more to life than what fitting in can provide. Her life lacked true and unguided feeling I guess. She's sick of this brand new world and yet if this song is about death, it's kinda late for her. Cos her life is (almost) over and she spent it doing what people call "living" which really means being guided and fitting in rather than having it her way by giving herself a chance to be free from it all. | |
| Team Dresch – Song for Anne Bannon Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think she says at the end: "a new form of experiment called lesbian knows best" | |
| Tegan and Sara – Walking with a Ghost Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
sweet song, wonderful video.. I found Jesuisunerockstar's (come again?) explanation the best, though I guess TandS know it better.. I especially love the video where I'm guessing there's evil and good or any 2 opposite terms. the evil one ript out the hearts of the good ones and takes them to her place. but then she's sitting all alone with all the hearts around her, she's not satisfied. And then one of the good ones pounds on the evil's door and eventually is let in. there she puts on headphones and starts saying "out of my mind.. out of my mind). then she2s on a surgery table and some hands with veeeeeery long arms are operating on her. after a while she wakes up on the surgery table and sees her heart has been put back in its place. and she runs to the other "good ones" and all their hearts are returned. Then we see the 2 evils look at them and we see that they have the surgeon glows which were on the giant hands before and their hearts are ripped out, meaning they ripped their own hearts out to give each good one a heart back. although I saw only 2 evils and 3 good. so where does the extra heart come from? ok, that was a very materialistic question for such a matter. I guess it's about friends who hurt us but that doesn't make them happy either. anyway it's 5 am and this is the best I can do rite now. I just like the sweet gothic feel, like in the video.. |

| Sleater-Kinney – Dance Song '97 Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think it might be about coming out; about being gay and knowing it no matter how much you try to run away from it. ** well you know there ain't no doubt when the feeling finds you out you know you can try to run i tell you it still will come ** It's pretty clear, you have no doubt and you can feel it. And when you really feel it, no matter how much you try to run, it's not going anywhere. ** when you feel your body shake trip and fall you can't walk straight baby then you know it's done you can feel your heart is stung ** This part is about falling in love. ** you're the one that i saw you're the one that i want ** Ok there're 2 explanations for this one: 1: corin is still talking about how falling in love feels (general) 2: the narrator/singer has a crush on this person she's talking about. So she states self-confidently that this person is the one she wants. (personal) ** well you can try to keep it down try not to let the words come out but i tell you it's no use in your eyes they see right through ** Most people find it hard to even say they are gay at first. so you might try to keep it inside, not let it out. But it's no use, it's part of who you are, like a visible part of you (not sure about this last one) ** if you're going way too hard if you're feeling way too much but inside you can't stop desire she eats you up ** It's hard with all the emotions and feelings kept inside and all the fear. You try to keep your true desires down, but you know what you really want, "desire, she eats you up" I think this impersonation of desire as a "she" also might be reflecting both the sex of this person and the sex of the person she wants, meaning it's a female and she's a lesbian, so she wants girls/women. Finally the song is called Dance Song '97 because it's obviously very suitable for dancing. OR the whole song is about falling in love and dealing with it. |

| Weezer – Pink Triangle Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I can't see how you can identify this song with chasing amy; the girl in chasing amy wasn't a lesbian, she was a hasbian or just bi-curious which lost me the whole movie. but the girl in the song is definitely gay. blue gate crossing would be a better match. at least the girl says he can't be witht he guy cos she likes girls. |
|
| Sleater-Kinney – Little Babies Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I read (yeah again, I know I look too dumb to figure stuff myself heh) that it's about male rock "idols" and their groupies or other girls around them. while the rockstars do their thing, they just use the girls tha come their way. it's like, how women are treated and used in the male dominant rock scene. like, women can't rock but they can take care of the rockstars which sucks. | |
| Sleater-Kinney – Was It A Lie? Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I read it's about a woman who was run over by a train and a tourist had a camera so he taped it all. it's about how women in pain is used as entertainment in the media all over the world. | |
| Sleater-Kinney – You're No Rock N' Roll Fun Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I read in a show review website that this song is about bands/musicians who are not really down to earth. it makes sense, cos they say "you're no rock'n'roll fun" cos they are "like a piece of art that no one can touch their head is "always up in the clouds" writing their songs, so s-k asks "won't you ever come down?" "And all the boys in the band know how to get down fill our Christmas socks with whiskey drinks and chocolate bars and when the evening ends we won't be thinking of you then Although the best man won't hang out with the girl band!" I think this part is both about boy bands' attitudes against girl bands, like "yeah, they are cool and alright but the best man won't hang out with us. cos he's too arrogant." and still about the "high and mighty" rockers when she says "and when the evening ends we won't be thinking of you then" cos "you're no rock'n'roll fun" that's part of what the reviewer and part of what I think about the song. and about the video, I think it might as well be pure rock'n'roll fun, without all the fuss about being too cool to have fun. and with a sweet twist at the end when we see a guy turning carrie's platform around, which could mean "we are no superheros, this is how it's done. so see him too!" or I'm just crazy :) anyways it's very sweet song. |
