Mineral – Gloria Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't mean to be harsh though. It's just that from the way he's talked about himself in interviews, it seems that he doesn't believe in any religion fully enough to declare himself of it. And so he's his own god, or the people he loves are his god; they're the things he prays to and builds himself upon and around. Like his life experiences and the people he meets form the framework of who he is, rather than a God.

Texas Is The Reason – There's No Way I Can Talk Myself Out Of This One Tonite (The Drinking Song) Lyrics 20 years ago
Who gives a shit? If you like these bands so much you should want them to be successful and for people to hear them and buy their cds/go to their shows, so they don't have to work shitty day jobs and can make a living off what they love doing and are good at. I hate closed-minded people who think like you do.

The Weakerthans – This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about coming to terms with yourself and realizing that you were only ever happy and secure when you were a kid and lived in your hometown. He talks about living your whole life and never being able to find whatever it is you're looking for, failing to describe a feeling, and that the changes in life are never real changes since the answer will always be 'home', and that you need to find a place where you belong in life.

Actually I think the song is a general metaphor for anyone who wants to do something "off kilter", that may not make them much money but fulfills them.

Jesse McCartney – Beautiful Soul Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is stupid. The lyrics are immature and lack depth, and a little punk kid like that obviously doesn't know what the hell he's talking about as much as he knows what sounds like a good song. Honestly, how much of the emotional spectrum could this kid have experienced to where he's had so much of what he realized he doesn't want and is now set on the definition of his happiness?

This song and the kid singing it both blow. Turn off the radio and start seeking some quality music.

The Weakerthans – The Prescience of Dawn Lyrics 21 years ago
It's about him confessing that he's done trying with relationships and just wants to live his life out calmly and quietly on his own.

The first half is about him wanting a reoccuring dream, spawned from a memory he wants to relive and a time of his life he wants to go back to. Because now he's all torn and weathered and he just wants a simple life of working in a hardware store of being a construction worker, so he could sail through life and through his apartment and office windows and everything, just live easy. I don't think the sailing part is a metaphor though; he does dream it, but the dream of him sailing is spawned out of that desire.

The last half is him asking his mother if it's okay to cry because he feels like he goes to her when he's sad, and he goes to his dad when he's toughened up and ready to present himself. He wants to learn how to live life the right way, so he asks his dad since he admires his dad.

He doesn't want another relationship, a second chance at romance, even though all his songs say that he does. The FM radio part could either be him sitting in his car with the radio on but just zoning out and realizing all of this (music fading to static), or it could be him using FM radio as a way of meaning the songs he writes that blur into static. But either way, he realizes "he should have known". He knows he's different and not like everyone else, so he should have known he wouldn't end up happy like they all do. The intensity of this realization explains why the song is so emotional and is also sort of the closer to the album.

Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics 21 years ago
Oh, and the title is obviously about how him being so self-sufficient will forever block all his shots at having what could have been love.

Jesse Lacey is obviously very independent and sulf-sufficient like I say, just read lyrics from some of his other songs.

Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about the boy being self-sufficient. This can come off as arrogance (like much of Jesse Lacey's lyrics), but it's a state of being completely content with yourself. You don't need any outward influences; you already are sufficient on your own. This is his response to a girl on why he can't be with her. I'll break down the lyrics:

if it makes you less sad i will die by your hand
i hope you find out what you are, i already know what i am
[[If it'd make her feel better, he'll never have another relationship because it would be like saying girl B was better than girl A (who this song is to); he honestly loves and cares about girl A, but has no ambition to be with her because he's content alone. He already knows who he is and doesn't need to figure it out through a relationship.]]

and if it makes you less sad we'll start talking again
you can tell me how vile i already know that i am
[[He'll be her friend if she wants, even though he knows she'll always spite him because she loves him so much but he doesn't need to be with her.]]

i'll grow old and start acting my age
be a brand new day in a life that you hate
a crown of gold, a heart that's harder than stone
but it hurts a whole lot and it's missed when its gone
[[He'll move on and be himself, and she'll always hate him for it. He'll wear his gold crown because he's the king of his own life, with his hard heart. But it hurts because he sees how the girls around him are being hurt, because they miss him when he's gone and want him but can never have him.]]

call me a safe bet, i'm betting i'm not
i'm glad that you can forgive
i'm only hoping as time goes on you can forget
[[This becomes obvious: everyone thinks he's so great and is such a safe bet and a good guy, but he's not because he'll never love or need anyone else. He's glad that they say they forgive him, but he can only hope they forget about him.]]

if it makes you less sad, i'll move out of this state
you can keep you yourself, i'll keep out of your way
and if it makes you less sad i'll take your pictures all down every picture you paint i will paint myself out
[[He'll do whatever she wants him to do if it would make her happier. He'll move out of the state, take her pictures down and forget about her, and he'll let her forget about him by painting him out of her pictures.]]

it's cold as a tomb and it's dark in your room
when i sneak to your bed to pour salt on your wounds
[[He doesn't love her deeply or feel warmth and protection from her, so her room is dark and cold. He still has sex with her though, and it's like pouring salt on her wounds; she can have sex with him, but he'll never love her.]]

so call it quits or get a grip
you say you wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed
[[I think this is him talking to himself now. He's telling himself to call it quits, stop having sex with her, or get a grip on yourself and just be normal and feel love like everybody else. He's always said that relationships are what he's wanted, but he's realizing that all the while he just wanted someone to miss him. He wanted to feel what it was like to have girls love him.]]

call me a safe bet, i'm betting i'm not
glad that you can forgivei
i'm only hoping as time goes on you can forget
so you can forget

you are calm and reposed, let your beauty unfold
pale white like the skin stretched over your bones
spring keeps you ever close, you are second hand smoke
you are so fragile and thin, standing trial for your sins
holding on to yourself the best you can
you are the smell before rain, you are the blood in my veins
[[This is him telling her how beautiful she is. He's saying the reasons he can't be with aren't because she's ugly she doesn't mean anything to him. It's the opposite: she's beautiful, skinny, she smells like spring rain, and when she's naked with him he sees her so fragile, thin, standing trial and open to anything that might want to harm her - and all of that is a beautiful thing. He cares about her, but he doesn't want to be with her because he doesn't need anyone but himself.]]

call me a safe bet, i'm betting i'm not
glad that you can forgivei
i'm only hoping as time goes on you can forget

Alkaline Trio – '97 Lyrics 21 years ago
Back in the City
The Sun bakes the trash on the curb
where the men are pissing in doorways
rats are running in herds

Had a dream with your face in it
It scared me awake
I put too much on the table
I put too much at stake

That doesn't mean it's about a girl; putting too much on the table, too much at stake...Southern Rock anyone? Both songs are about drugs. The drug undertone is a huge part of Alkaline Trio, a lot of the lyrics are drug references told through metaphors that make them sound relationship-driven. It's easy to see if you look for it, and understandable from the very drug/alcohol-dependent Skiba.

Death Cab for Cutie – Title Track Lyrics 21 years ago
The "filter" line is awesome, but "I tried my best to keep my distance from your dress but call-response overturns conviction every time" is definitely better in my opinion. Whereas "filter" is some clever wording making for some awesome descriptive narrative, the "call-response" line is like a summary for the whole song. Someone else here already pointed out the relation to answering a phone call: he makes a call (makes a move on her), she responds (let's him continue), and now convictions are overturned (he just keeps going). You know you shouldn't do it, but if nobody's stopping you then you just do anyway. Every time.

Death Cab for Cutie – Sleep Spent Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is pretty simple, about him not being able to stop thinking about this girl. The most interesting part is the last line, here he talks about "spent this last year choking the bottle's neck that pulled you from my bed." He's drinking, which you do when you're depressed. Apparently his being depressed is what drove this girl from him in the first place.

Death Cab for Cutie – Champagne from a Paper Cup Lyrics 21 years ago
This is most likely from the perspective of him post-relationship where he still wants to be with the girl.

The part about him being drunk enough to drive this girl home, and not talking about it, is what a lot of people have said about him just saying, "fuck it" and going with another girl because he's too depressed to care.

All the conversations are winding on and on and he just can't bring himself to care about them because all he can do is think of this girl he loves. He's drinking and can feel it going to his brain, taking him over, and he keeps drinking because he wants to let the alcohol control him so he can take a break, so to say. Like living's become too hard and he just wants to drink till he's unconscious. Basically, what alcoholics do.

The last part is about him dancing, just stumbling around to the music because he's drunk but he's waiting for this girl he loves to show up even though he knows she won't. He only went to this party in the first place to escape from the world for a while, and him wishing she was there is no more than him wishing she was with him anywhere else. So basically it's not like "she didn't show up to this party," but she never knew about it or had any intention of going in the first place.

He doesn't end up going home with whoever he was talking about at the beginning, he just dances around drunk and writes the night off as another one spent missing this girl. The "drunk enough to drive you home now" idea is just something that he considered, and he never said it to her but was just thinking it.

This song is pretty self-explanatory though, but I'm on this mini-quest to write an analysis for every Death Cab song.

Death Cab for Cutie – President of What? Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm going to take a stab at this song. I'll break it all down, but in general I think it's about a relationship and how both parties don't really know why they're in it but they're just playing the game by the rules they think they should be following.

The first five lines of the song (as written on this page) are about how he's with her, having sex with her, because he doesn't want her to leave him. He wants to keep it all going at a nice and steady pace. He takes her for granted as in there's nothing she does that makes him think she's "the one," but he takes a little more anyway so her gears won't turn and roll her away from him.

"Something's got to break you down" is about how in the back of his mind he doesn't want to be with her, that's why he takes the relationship for granted. So even though he's trying and trying to keep the relationship going in the back of his mind he knows that he really wants it to end. The way the song slows down for this lyric indicates how the layers have to be pulled away before it's revealed, like all the instruments (the other thoughts of his that are clouding his intentions) have to be stopped before the truth can be seen.

The part from "entered the scene..." all the way to "...such a dreadful sight" is all one "chapter" in this story. This time it's from her perspective, how she's mining the quarry and doing the same thing to him as he's doing to her. Now he's getting taken for granted, and she's the one doing all the work keeping it going at a nice and steady pace. But only now, other guys are seeing her and coveting her and she's arching her back, "strutting her stuff" to show off to them and all of this is a dreadful sight because he knows it means it's almost over, that she doesn't care about him. It's a dreadful sight because it's like hitting him upside the head with the truth and he can't keep denying it anymore.

"I'll react when faces find you with jealous fits that gag and bind you." This first line is from his point of view, how he's not going to care about her until he knows he has competition - but as soon as he does, he's going to have jealous fits because he knows she likes these other guys more than him. Now he's going to realize he's losing the battle and going to keep trying to make it better, even though all this while he still knows he doesn't love her. It's just become a game, and he doesn't want to lose.

"Nothing hurts like nothing at all, when imagination takes full control." All the pain he's feeling isn't even really there, he's just telling himself it is. Nothing hurts like nothing at all - he's hurting, but there wasn't even anything to hurt over in the first place. He thought there was, because imagination took full control.

Death Cab for Cutie – Bend to Squares Lyrics 21 years ago
This song seems to be about trying to move on after a relationship. He doesn't know how to do it, so he looks around at all the happy people around him and decides to try and be like them. He gravitates towards a taste for culture and class, and drink casually and socially because that's what everyone seems to do.

But the whole time he's hinting at how you can only "bend to squares five or six times before your fingers came unwired." I think this means you can only do it for so long before you realize it isn't you, that's not the kind of person you are, and it's almost killing you to live like that. The reference someone made to slitting their wrists - and unwiring their fingers - is accurate here.

The part that ends in "...time passed and that was that," seems to reinforce my theory, how after a while time passes and that's that. No gain, no satisfaction. Time's just passed and you're the same person and you're not any happier by living this new lifestyle.

Then he repeats the line, "weights down so that you can move forwards" to bring back to mind what you're doing; dropping the weight and stop living so deeply and emotionally, so you can move on.

The "cut lengthwise" connection between slitting your wrists someone else here made I think is correct, and he's saying that all of this is a fine way to kill yourself. Because you're abandoning the real you. What a way to cut lengthwise.

Saosin – Seven Years Lyrics 21 years ago
I think nerdfiles is dead wrong; I don't think this song is about God at all. I also don't get how some of you drew a father-son relationship from that, and I don't think it's about heroin. I think it should be taken at face value, as a song about a breakup he can't move on from and it's been seven years but he still loves her and he's just getting it all off his chest in this song. The last few lines hint towards the argument that led to their breakup, and how they're still at bitter ends with who was right and who was wrong.

It’s one thing to write with a tremendous vocabulary and sound intelligent—but it’s another thing to HAVE that knowledge and use simple words and speak with sense. I admire people who write with simplicity. Minus the Bear's lyrics are about going on road trips, getting drunk, and falling in love. It's about having fun in life, and their music is just as bouncy and lively.

Death Cab for Cutie – Blacking Out the Friction Lyrics 21 years ago
When they played this song live when I saw them, they played an altered version that started with Ben on the piano and Chris' guitar playing softly, then a after a while the guitars picked up like normal until after the final verse, when they continued into an all-new verse with the drumbs banging in the background and the guitars sounding like chimes. It was so beautiful, and the verse was amazing. It dealt with long distances and phone calls and was about love, to maybe shed more meaning onto this song. I wish they would record that version, it's seriously one of my favorite Death Cab songs. Maybe my favorite.

Death Cab for Cutie – Gridlock Caravans Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song is about feeling different from other people - whether it be through experiencing love when others haven't, having an epiphany about life, or whatever. But you press your shirts and feel all clean and enlightened, and you think everything's going to work from here on out but it only gets worse since you become distant and can't find anyone to relate to.

This song is probably about love, since he talks about his heart being too heavy for his chest to hold as if he's just been overwhelmed with emotions and that's what makes him feel distant, like no one else knows what he's known or how he's felt.

I wish I knew what he was talking about lighting, something with plastic at one end. But the last few lines are about the distance he feels; the "friends" he has, who are supposed to understand him, are on the exit ramps to gridlock caravans; they're all getting off but there's no stopping the train he's on and the farther away they go the more muffled their voices become. Until finally you can't even talk to them anymore because the metal of the caravan and the thick glass of the windows drowns out the sound.

Whatever this song is about though, there's that hint of genius. One of Death Cab's best, for sure.
