Eels – Dirty Girl Lyrics 21 years ago
Agreed, great song. Meaning is pretty obvious. It tells a story, as with many eels songs, this one about someone who is looking back with longing on a failed relationship with a slightly trashy but wonderful girl.

On the rare occasions when I play music live, and on the rarer occasions when I pull this song out, I like to change/extend the chorus section a little. (Sorry shockdelica) I just don't like rhyming "eyes" and "lies". too cliche for me. instead, i sing:

"...I know that we will need to pretend
and look away
we don't have a thing to say"

yes, I know, it's blasphemy to change the lyrics to a good song, but it feels right to me.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Perfect Lyrics 21 years ago
The meaning of this song has been described well enough above, and I especially liked IAmTheEvenstar's take on it.

As for what I think of when I hear it... this song was playing the first time I ever kissed a girl, almost six years ago (God, i'm 22 and already feeling old). We were a couple for a short while, and it ended, but we were still friends.

A few months ago, a relationship of four years ended, and this song is just wishful thinking, to me. I'd like it if we could still be friends, but I've got too many feelings of bitterness and anger to ever be able to follow through with that.

In Flames – In Search For I Lyrics 21 years ago
pretty good song, although IF has way better. I read this one as basically being about an identity crisis, or wanting to move on to something new but not being able to.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tales of a Scorched Earth Lyrics 21 years ago
when I listen to the verse Wurby Tictoc posted, I hear the last line as
"And time is everything and I have no hope"

the song is about that point when you're incredibly angry and unhappy and just want to be left alone, and how the things you've done in the past don't stop affecting you...

for a long time I hated this song, but as I got into the whole Gothenburg scene, I started to love it. It's one of my favorite of the pumpkins "metal" songs, next to Zero, and maybe geek usa.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Zero Lyrics 21 years ago
One of my favorite pumpkins rockers... I think Geek UK had it right in that, to paraphrase, GatMoG is more or less based on this song . I'd argue that this song itself is about self destruction of one form or another.

The first four lines refer to a Mr. Hyde part of the narrator's personality (I say "narrator" rather than "Billy" because he has admitted to writing songs from the perspective of various made up characters). The lack of connection that he has with his own reflection re-enforces this idea. The line "I'm your lover, I'm your zero" blatantly indicates that he is telling his story to a lover, and the zero comment refers to the fact that he feels worthless to her.

The next four lines are a display of self destructive behavior that he exhibits to said lover. He does something stupid, or uses drugs in front of her, she freaks out on him, and his response is along the line of telling her not to worry, this sort of thing happens all the time (i.e., “so save your prayers…”) and he tries to make her do something self destructive with him.

The chorus of the song (“She’s the one for me…”) is what he’s thinking while he’s being self destructive. This is immediately followed by the bridge in which he rants about god being empty. The inclusion of these lines immediately following his statement of devotion to his lover means that this vast emptiness he feels is the reason for his self destructive behavior and is caused by this lover being “all he really needs”. She doesn’t help the emptiness and loneliness he feels, and his devotion to her prevents him from changing the situation.

Following this is an attack on society as a whole, everything outside their relationship is perceived as fake and worthless (what do bullshit fakers, enchanted kingdoms, fashion victims, and charcoal teeth have in common? They’re all fake, to some extent, and lack a certain degree of validity).

The next four lines are where his lover panics as she realizes that she is to blame for his self destruction and for not realizing what was happening.

The chorus repeats itself, emphasizing that she is the root cause for his emptiness. The fact that the music breaks away at the end of “she’s my one and only” is significant. I think that this symbolizes the point when it truly clicks in the narrator’s mind that she is causing his problems. The chaotic music drops away, and he is left with a moment of clarity during which he can actually improve his life.
