Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
I forgot to add,
The general point is the both sex and music, can be like worship. That's what the 'holy dove was moving too, and every breath we drew was hallelujah' is about.

sawbones420 - you are a complete and utter gimboid. If that's how you listen to the words in music, get the hell off this website, thanks.

that out of the way, this song is about far more than 'penis in and out of vagina'. it is about:-
Music - David's flute playing is part of his worship of god
I particularly like the 'baffled king' line, the muscian, even though he's a king, is merely a vessel for the music - he plays it but even he can't fully understand it!

Lust - Despite David's faith and many gifts, he's tempted and succumbs to a woman's beauty. And before he knows it, she's made a slave/captive of him, and 'unmanned him' (cut his hair - Samson reference). The 'but you needed proof' line is intriguing. Proof of God's power? Proof as in proof that her good looks equate to good sex? Who knows.

The other verses aren't as interesting as those first two imho, so that's all I feel like saying!

"i know that i am meant for this world"
I love this lyric, personally I read it more like "i FEAR that i am meant for this world", which (I think) is what it's supposed to come across like. If so then best lyric ever!

Phish – Reba Lyrics 21 years ago
the jam after all those lyrics is probably my favourite of all phish jams.... the goovy and for lack of a better word "phishy" sequence leading up to it is awesome in its own right (even though phish do things a lot like it in other tunes like divided sky for example). 17/8/96 is a particularly good version so check it out!!!!!!!!!

The Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Lyrics 21 years ago
Some of the verses sound like they are about drugs. I'm not saying that billy corgan had this in mind but it really does sound like the description of taking drugs to change your consciousness. I wonder if 'Porcelina' is the narrator's name for his porcelain clay piece? that's a funny idea :)

Grateful Dead – Looks Like Rain Lyrics 21 years ago
Absolutely beautiful song. An excellent example of how music and lyrics in the Dead's songs can fit each other better than they do in any other band's work.

Grateful Dead – Weather Report (Part 1) Lyrics 21 years ago
Lovely song.
Simply about how sad it is when Summer fades to Winter (as far as I can tell).
The chord changes are so beutiful, and this is one song at least where Donna's vocals are never overdone ^_^

Grateful Dead – Eyes Of The World Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is just full of beautiful imagery - i love the chords they use, it's so invocative of summer and lots and lots of open space and beaches and the sea.......

I agree with you sexwax, i don't know of any real meaning to the song as a whole but rather each line is a different idea.

I particularly like "there comes a redeemer but he slowly too fades away". It's possibly talking about prophets such as Jesus. Although Jesus was great and all his messages were for a different time so eventually you need new messages, more applicable to your time and place.

Grateful Dead – Jack Straw Lyrics 21 years ago
This is possibly my favourite Dead song. As said on this wonderful Grateful Dead annotations website: http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl Jack straw is a game about you're options running out.

Which is what this song is about. Shannon (who is the Jack Straw in the song title) is running out of options, he's on the run from the law and has nowhere to hide, he then has to kill his friend because he's moving too slow as he doesn't agree with what Shannon is doing.

The meaning is that once you start being a criminal it's a downward spiral. You keep going one stage further, deeper and deeper into crime untill you're forced to do very bad things.

So in the end there's no real sharing or friendship amongst bad people....

Grateful Dead – Stella Blue Lyrics 21 years ago
This song really tears me up inside. I listened to this one dark night when my school days were almost an end - i was feeling really depressed because I knew that I had been at that same school so long (11 years) and seemed to be that I had almost nothing to show for it...

The lyrics seemed so appropriate, and the music even more so. I think the song is about how time creeps up on you and then you're just wondering where it all went. You have so many regrets and there's been so much wasted time... it feels so sad but you just have to move on.

Grateful Dead – Box Of Rain Lyrics 21 years ago
Box of rain = this world we live in

Bear that in mind next time you listen to the song, it makes a lot more sense. It's a very melonchollie song. Full of metaphors for being disillusioned, living out your life without being in control. But then the song is reasuring, saying that this world's just a box of rain, wind and water... believe it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on. It's like the song is telling you not to worry about your life because there's lots of sadness in the world no matter who you are, and you're only alive for a short time (long long time to be gone and a short time to be there) so be take pleasure in what you want and just be happy!

Grateful Dead – Terrapin Station Lyrics 21 years ago
I've heard that this is a fan favourite because many parts of the song are good descriptions of what the Grateful Dead experiance is all about.

"The story teller makes no choice..." - a great thing about Robert Hunter's lyrics is that they don't dictate to you, they let you think and make up your own mind.

"Inspiration, move me brightly..." This climax is so perfect... it's like a prayer to god for the inspiration for the performance to go well and not get tedious. The thing about the Dead's concerts is that they should all be unique, so it's so important for the jamming to be inspired rather than boring and unoriginal.

Led Zeppelin – That's the Way Lyrics 21 years ago
Possibly my favourite Led Zep song.

I find it interesting that in the first verse it seems that the protagonist's mother seems to be a bad figure (forbidding her son to be friends with another boy), but then later the story teller seems to understand his mother's words differently ("What did mama say to me").

I think it shows the boy growing up and seeing that may his mother had reasons for what she said. The other boy seems to be a hippy and a dreamer ("let your hair hang down", "kissing tiny flowers", "tears filled your eyes..."). And as the story teller grows up he realises that you just don't have time to be a dreamer in life, you have to accept that things change - the flowers soon die, the river gets polluted. You can't just cry about it - you have to do something. So that's what the story-teller understands but his childhood friend doesn't.

It's a very mature sort of message:
-that although your mother may have had the wrong reasons for doing what she did, she did it because she knew what was best for you.
-don't be preoccupied by how things are right now, think of the future because these things will all change.
