| Ben Folds – Carrying Cathy Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I could be wrong about this, but when I first heard this song I had a slightly different take on it than what I've seen on here. I feel like the person singing the song was Cathy's friend, and maybe her only friend who didn't see just how depressed she really was. When the chorus says that there was always someone carrying her, I thought that meant that there were people carrying her, but she wasn't able to see it. I think the line that sold me on this thinking was the "I was in over my head" He tries to defend her to other friends, but he has no idea just how bad it is. The other line that sticks with me is "You could've done anything, but to imagine a fall with no one at all to catch you." I took that as he thought the last think that she would imagine doing is commit suicide because there had always been someone there to catch her. So I still agree that it's about suicide, but my take on the song is that it comes from the point of view of a friend (or guy that liked her) who found out her depression too late to save her. |

This is a song about yes, being selfish and caring about only yourself, but i find in this song...some reasons for being like that. For instance..."If you break me down," all you see is selfish desire because there is no other choice (desperate times, desperate measures) and i'm not ashamed of this choice, because i had to take it. I didn't always feel this way, i chose this path among many. If i were to open myself and my dreams to you, you would count them all as lies. Maybe they are lies, but their still my dreams. I could let you in on my feelings if it's convenient for me, and it's going to help me in some way, but it's to no avail, everytime i try that it doesn't help me. Then the song takes like a completely new twist in my mind, and i really don't understand why, but it makes me think that something in my interpretation is wrong, but i don't know what. For the last part of the song, i interpret it completely different, and i've never been able to tie the two together. I'll interpret line for line what i think the last part means to me. I took a cane from a blind man (I've committed small sins) I've tasted the fruit in the Garden of Eden (I've committed the largest crimes known to man) When I walk out of here (When I ask for forgiveness) I know I'll stand clear (I know that I'll be forgiven of everything) But the taste in my mouth still remains (But I still feel the guilt from all my sins) Yeah, completely different...so i don't know, but yeah, there's my interpretation. |

Ok, here's the way the story was told to me. Ryan Miller wrote this song for a couple who lost their one of their children to suicide. The song is written for that couple and attempts to both express the feelings they have, and solutions to it. It's an extremely powerful song, and here's how I interpret it. The shock that your young child has just committed suicide clouds the realization that you could not have done anything to stop him. You couldn't have, for example, come home from work early, caught him in the act, and saved his life. It's a lie to tell yourself that if you had done something differently he would still be alive. How can you blame his actions for what you are feeling right now, that's only killing yourself, and it's carrying you away into ideas that aren't true. "Dissolve your fear into one." I honestly love this line to death. It says to me, you have to let it go, you have to let yourself not forget him, but forget the instance, let it dissolve away, and the song says that it will dissolve away in time. So then it's true that we aren't immune to all the talks of tragedies, it's true that it really can happen to anyone. There's a way out of this pain (dissolving), but you can't even see this yet because you're still in denial of this event happening. To try and understand why he killed himself....it will get you no where and you will not ever understand it. To try and find the meaning....you're lying to yourself again. And then i think Ryan really speaks to people his beliefs of how to deal with this...and no one expresses it better than him. So interpreting... To be able to right the wrong that he's made is To try and understand why he did it is To finally figure that It's in his plans To leave it alone and just let it be is To find a way To (finally) figure out that It's not your fault Huge, huge, huge....this song has helped me through many hard times...and i hope that with this interpretation, it will do the same for you. |

| Guster – Bury Me Lyrics | 21 years ago |

It's a cut and paste song to me. First verse... When the day will come along And you have been there Find the angels at your feet Prone on the ground there When the day comes that you are to die, and you find the angels lying at your feet. The chorus means that everything that he has of value here on earth means nothing to him. He says that he is not afraid of death..."Come and bury me". And he asks you plainly "Don't you see the kingdom?" He says, don't you see that it's not about the things you have here on earth, it's about how the kingdom sees you. And from the first verse...you have the angels at your feet...so "Hold your crown so high"....basically you should be proud and the kingdom awaits you. For the second verse: Don’t know where the angel’s gone Haven’t been there Find the jackals at your feet Stain the ground there This is the other extreme. You don't know where the angel has gone (you don't believe). You've never been there (never believed before). All that you find at your feet are the stains of the jackals (jackals could be symbolic of those laughing at you). This time the chorus completely changes. The person is afraid of death "Don't come and bury me" and they have nothing to show for in the kingdom "Won't find mine underneath" |

| I completely agree with RomulusRomstar. THIS SONG IS ABOUT INFATUATION! However, the song includes parts that reference to masturbation. Read the lyrics, it's clear that the MAIN meaning of the song is the infatiation and obsession, and masturbation comes as a part of thist obsession. | |

You're right, and I think the meaning of this song is hidden well, but if you look carefully, you can find it. I'd like to point out some key words and phrases first. The most important line is "Why do you still come home anymore". To me, this is all about someone who has left their family, or is about to leave their family. The garden to me symbolizes many things. The house, the family, and most importantly, the problems of the family. In the beginning, he used to always go to the "garden" and deal with the problems (weeds). He/she would even go so far as to dig down to the roots to resolve the problem. But now, the person isn't dealing with the problems, and they continue to build up more and more. And as the problems begin to build up, he/she no longer cares. Now in the "garden" hardly any of the beautiful flowers and plants are left, and everything about the family is almost gone. Finally, the last stanza just drives the issue home that the person has given up on their family, and why are they even around anymore..."when you don't care?" I love Guster |

| That's exactly the meaning I have associated with this song....and in fact, if you have the special edition of Guster's "Keep It Together" CD, they do a very comical, yet very enlightening spin-off of their own song "Amsterdam." Within it, Ryan sings as if he's high, there are many images of mushrooms, and the whole thing itself is very colorful and something you would imagine a person to experience when high on drugs. So to me, it is clear that this song is very much related to drug addiction. | |
| Guster – All The Way Up To Heaven Lyrics | 21 years ago |

To me, the biggest giveaway that this song is about Christianity (whether mockingly or not) is the lyrics in the undertones at the end of the song. I'll rewrite them real quick. It's a warm summer breeze It's a weakness in your knees It's perfect place above Full of everlasting love Nothing to fear Nothing to hide You just say what's on your mind Needn't think before you speak This is how it's meant to be Ever high never fall You can do no wrong at all In this heaven up above Filled with everlasting love To the light To the light To me, this symbolizes the reason that most Christians believe in Christianity. I think the highness of his voice is just to further push the meaning of going up and to be "ever high" and never falling. I usually think that all things in Guster songs have some meaning, comedy always seems to follow along with it. |

| The ping-pong game at the end is also very symbolic to me. You'll notice that it's not exactly a usual ping-pong game, the beat is completely steady. To me this symbolizes that you as a listener have been brainwashed because all you hear now is the constant sound of the ping-pong ball going back and forth. It's a great way to wrap up the song and really give away the meaning. | |
