I think this is him contemplating suicide. And really, the only thing holding him back is drugs, but his family does "not like the way I'm living." |

It is about his addiction. "My feet are so cold," is a reference to how he is feeling on heroin. He is basically saying he needs to get away from the drugs and get to family & friends, but its too hard. |

I think everything was getting out of control with Gary, they thought. Heroin, Blow, Qualudes ('ludes), and way too much drinking. |

RamFan-
Actually, Clapton was a H addict and he did get rehab for it. I'm sure he used coke quite often, but I don't think this song is about it. Cocaine is actually not physically addictive, it is mentally addictive. The high is so short-lived. |

jakieblum, thanks for letting me know about that theory.
while im not exactly going to discredit it immediately, I will say that Robert Hunter said he only wrote one song under the influence of anything and that was Dupree's Diamond Blues. I'm not saying he didn't abuse substances, because he certainly did, but he generally did not write songs while under the influence of anything at all. |

It is about losing a friend to a coke addiction. However, I find it ironic considering Neil Young has done a lot of coke in his day (check out the video from The Last Waltz with coke boogers in his nose). |
