Oh wow! what a song. More importantly, what a singer. Leonard Cohen is just so talented. I think the older he got, the better his voice became. The world is missing one amazing man! When I first heard this song, I did believe my ears! (anal sex??) Yes, that is what he said. I know that some gigs he played were censored. Russia allowed it, but when he sang in London, it was casual sex. I think that was a shame to change it. Anyone who was not acquainted with his work, may have found it disturbing and dislike it intensely. I agree it is disturbing in places. i.e. "Kill another fetus now, (we don't like children anyhow), it is but it is just one of the stanzas in the song which hits us. I think the song is speaking of evil in the world, and how it affects people. There is evil in the song, and also religion, albeit going back to the Bible where St.Paul is accusing of Jesus until he had the transformation. It seems that there are paradoxes as well. i.e. "Give me Christ or give me Hiroshima" . So many of them. Because we are all so different, the song is interpreted differently. What one person sees, another does not. But, we all have our points of view, and this song really gives us something to think about. Rest in Peace Mr. Cohen, you are sadly missed. |

| Recently having bought You want it darker I am overwhelmed and intrigued by the lyrics. I just listened to Treaty and I believe that it is a Treaty between Leonard and God. Changing water into wine and then back again is somewhat of an enigma, as Jesus only turned water into wine. Sitting at God's table reminds me of the Last Supper. I am sorry for the Ghost I made you be, could be Judas when he betrayed Jesus, and consequently Jesus was Crucified because of the betrayal. The hill maybe is Calvery, and the Snake, the Devil. There is rejoicing too, after the Resurrection of Jesus. And the Disciples did sell themselves for love, and then they were free after the Crucifixion. I love the words. "You were my ground, my safe and sound, my ariel. So moving. And, of course the words "I', angry and I;m tired all the time, I think is Judus angry at himself for betraying Jesus and feeling so tired of the whole thing. . I haven't said a word since you've been gone that any liar could not say as well. There is nothing left to say. It is over and the victory, the loss , the pain and the betrayal is all that is left. Could be wrong, but for me, the words are right there and I relate. I'm so infatuated and obsessed over the person I can't have that I fall asleep at my console, my laptop, my phone, exhausting myself to see them whilst researching on how to win them or just day dreaming of them. I don't remember my actual dreams I'm so exhausted. I'm checking in my social media, just like any other, no big deal. It's not about them, right? Signing off, signing out forever? Me deleting and attempting to stay off forever, just to get them off my mind and over it. Your second hand, that's the reason why you're easy to drive. My second hand is my weak side, I easily drive myself crazy. I think this song is a critic to people who say they hate pop culture (pop music). i see this song as someone realizing the meaning of life and portraying it in its form of communication, the "it was a different kind of speech" i tend to read this in a lovecraftian way, as he learned a way to speak of things that transcends his knowledge, therefore only adressing something so great just by "different kind of speech" like his mind couldnt conceptualize all that he discovered and by discovering that he also began to see other things, such as the shape of sound (another link to communication) and he express all he learned through the phrase "breathe and breathe in, once you find the breath you lost, breathe again" meaning only once you figure out what takes your peace from you, relax and focus on other things in your life |

I believe the song is about two individuals in love, she is pursuing something she thinks will make her happy. But when she gets there the reality of disappointment occurs. "chasing mirrors through a haze" its an illusion. When that person realizes its all BS the other lover is there to say there is nothing stopping you from coming back, knowing full well she had to at least go see for herself. "don't you cry because she is gone, she is only moving on" to find the truth, which will ultimately put right back where she was. I came to this because Im currently going through it, she had to go see for herself... It just matches and hits every one of my internal chords so dead on. |

I agree with a lot of what you all have said... I just have a more personal take on this song because it has been.. there has been no other song that closely matches how I've felt recently with things that have gone on in my life. I was in a relationship for three years, engaged for one year of that, lived with them for two. I know, it seems like a short lived relationship but so much went on in it that this song has been.. oddly helpful in my trying to cope with everything. The song describes so much of what happened between us but I felt abandoned in the end. I was left to deal with their secrets, the shames, their problems and then they left me with a clear conscious despite all they put me through... And like so many before him, he abandoned me. He left me to rot after having taken so much of his demons out on me. And I don't care if he says he still cares for me, I don't want to know because I don't want to feel like there's hope right now. He's done too much damage to me and I've been left feeling bitter. This is how the song has felt to me. I had my own demons from my life but things had been going so much better and then I thought he was the ultimate symbol that my life was finally on the right track, but in the end he just.. left his sins in my soul and left. That is basically how the song feels to me, if it makes any sense. |

| This used to be my ex and I's song. Over time, it's had different and very personal meanings for me. At the beginning, I was transfixed with the "on a platform" lyric as it seemed to convey my confession of love for her and wanting to shout it from the rooftops to everyone. As time went by, our relationship slowly and selfishly became less and less about each other and I became more transfixed on the sort of heartbreaking and somber nature of it. It speaks softly but surely about a sort of unrequited, unreturned, undeserving kind of love... A love you have to give too much of yourself to have. Needless to say our relationship wasn't ever meant to be and after years of on again off again trying over and over to make it work we finally had to let go. It was awful, and it's been years since I've brought myself to listen to this song all the way through. Funny enough this is right around the time of year I first really heard it and shared it and my feelings with her so long ago, and I've got to admit it makes me really kind of sad. Especially when thinking back now on how things turned out with us, but you know things change, time goes by, you move on, you fall in love all over again, and in the end life ends up full of little bittersweet remembrances just like this damnable song. | |

I agree that the lyrics are wrong here and elsewhere: We are MATURE children also, in many places it says "Changes forever" when it's "Take us forever", like here. Now here's my interpretation, and I have to say one tiny line has really had a HUGE impact on my life: "Whisper to a scream" To me, this song is about the difficulties of discussing, debating, and in the end arguing. It's such a necessary part of doing anything together in a group. But in both personal relationships and in politics, it so often degrades into everyone screaming at the top of their lungs, and never getting anywhere. We choose the loudest words, the words that most hurt, over the words that would really make a difference in getting us somewhere. If I were to write this song, the parallel I'd try isn't with birds, but with fighting dogs. When I was a kid, I had a pitbull, really a sweet thing, but would get in a lot of scraps with other dogs... As a kid, I would sometimes have to pull them apart, and it was there that this song really started resonating with me: I found that the more I yelled at my dog to stop fighting, the more excited he got. So I had to learn to jump in the middle of the violence, and start soothing him. Soft words, petting, anything to calm him down and "change the subject" - a whisper to a scream. And this is what I see over and over again with people: the worst thing you can do when you disagree is to yell at them, but it's the hardest thing to do, to learn to pull back and speak in a whisper rather than adding fuel to the fire. "Take us forever" has a double meaning to me: it seems like it takes forever to get a point across when you decide to slow down and cool off. And, it will take forever for all of us mature children to learn how to whisper to a scream. |
