Caravan Lyrics

Allow me a moment to explain
While you were sleeping the ocean wasn't drained
But transformed
It yawned and groaned as it rose from its bed
It stretched; diluted and extended its head
And took corporeal form
At least in part at first
But when it encountered the Earth
It took a deep draw in, extended its arms, and leapt into the sky
It took wing over mountain and rode on the wind
It traveled the cities but as the sun dimmed
It grew fat and it cursed at the earth
In a thunderous rage
And a display of bright lights
It spat and began to give birth
The bloom is off the rose, at least for me
Dogs like me can bark, but the caravan moves on
When you finally awoke, a new ocean had formed
Through the clamorous night, through the magnificent storm
It fell from the sky to reform and preform
Its endless endeavor in its worn uniform
The Sun, the Moon, the Earth, and the shore
Tired metaphors played out before your eyes
Sedation, satisfaction
But to be satisfied and entertained
Without any source of intellectual gain
Seems to be what's in fashion
Interpret the meaning
To mean whatever you want it to be
I've heard these same words fall from my own lips
It falls flat and I question its value
It falls flat and I question its worth
In a thunderous rage
And a display of bright lights
It spat and began to give birth
The bloom is off the rose, at least for me
Dogs like me can bark, but the caravan moves on
Better to light a candle than curse at the darkness
This is the confluence of narrative and naivety
Swallowing a stream of lies and empty poetry
You don't have to be the one to tell me
You don't have to be the one to let me down
A catchy way of saying nothing
But a narrative seems to allude to something more
With a purpose and a real direction
But they're just words punched in a template
The same mistakes we made before
I, for one, am fucking tired
Of conceptions that bring nothing new from the womb
But if every story is the same
Then the rose has truly lost its bloom
Can you sing it back to me?
I can't relate to this
I can't relate
Maybe it's your preference
But I can't relate
"Where is the problem? We're entertained."
My problem's the consistency with every concept made
Don't just tell me a story
What does it convey?
"Where is the problem? We're entertained."
I want to feel something more than just betrayed
You are the problem
I am the problem
Are you satisfied?
Don't be satisfied

This song is incredible, I love it as I do all of their music. This one seems to strike a very personal chord with them. Thirst for something new and struggling as an artists to produce it seem to be the main themes of this song, and maybe this album as a whole.

If we look at Pacific Myth, it weaves through it's narrative a question of why. Why do we work until we are unable? Why must the endless cycle of rebirth and death stagnate in the womb? Why when we find a voice amid the listless masses must we accept the fact that it too will one day fade out completely to be heard again in some distant future? Asking why on a spiritual level.

The concept of the ocean is representative of humanity as a whole. Listless masses that conglomerate into a single body that constantly shifts perspectives, narratives, wealth, beliefs, values. Born from nothing, climbing or stagnating, and destined to return to nothing. In this amalgamation, there is a rise and fall that all of us experience without exception. Rising to fame, then falling into anonymity. Rising from squalor to one day dive back into it. Starting from immense wealth to be consumed by poverty. Transformation. Birth. Death.

To the outliers that disagree with the conglomerate, it may seem futile to question the masses. This is just my interpretation of this, and as the lyrics state, we can interpret things in any way we see fit. But from a band that has always been less popular than I believe they deserve, it wouldn't be a surprise if they see their hard work that they pour their souls into, only reaching so far. Albeit to dedicated fans, but that has to affect their creative process in some way.

But it also has themes of resilience. Bolstering themselves through their concerted efforts to craft their art in a way they can be proud of, while understanding the ethereal nature at their core. And to do so while expressing their issues with media consomme as a whole falls perfectly in line with their style. Calling out the disingenuous practices that are permitted by record labels, media moguls, industry as a whole that chokes the lifeblood from artistry until there's nothing fresh and new, leaving the masses satisfied as they gorge themselves on easily consumable products that fill the higher up's pockets, without the risk.

The reason I have always loved this band since the early days is because they are that "something new from the womb" for me. I love all types of music, but Protest the Hero hits differently for me. I will support them as long as I am able. Enraptured by their work, but never truly satisfied and always wanting more.

"The mark of a great artist and a great song is that it can mean different things to different listeners." A comment from another commenter on this site. But it seems to be exactly what this song is about and how that is a half ass way to do things lyrically.
