This song is about someone with very strong feelings, and they're trying to let the one they have affection for know that.
For one reason or another they can't be together, but just the moments they can have are satisfying and enough.

Regarding the end, I think the idea is "if everything is paradise then nothing is". If the weather is always perfect and you have the best wine all the time then eventually you get bored of it. "All the passions of your youth are tranquilized and tamed"

I'm not convinced this song is about prostitution and VD...although I don't deny it could be interpreted that way. I do believe this song is written from the perspective of an obsessed lover who is at least on the verge of some sort of mental or emotional breakdown.

The lyrics indicate the composer has had some type of intimate (likely sexual..."layin' in the afterglow...") relationship with the person he is singing to. But his infatuation doesn't appear to be requited. The relationship wasn't as big a deal to the subject as it was to the writer, and now he is left with emotions and thoughts that are gnawing away at him:
"I only want to learn what you know..." "How many calls must I make..." "It's killing me so much..." "...you leave in danger, and I'll make sure that you pay..."
These are the ramblings of a person obsessed with someone else. I also think the phrase, 'so give a little passion to a stranger,,,' might refer to the subject of his obsession sharing intimacy with someone else he isn't familiar with (not necessarily a prostitution reference) but that causes him to state that he can't be responsible for his reaction when she does...'take this soul away...'
It's actually a stalker's anthem.

It's a clarion call to a world that says "get yours" and "if the other person doesn't meet your needs, find someone who will".

It's a hopeful song that calls for us personally to live for our partner's best life, knowing that somehow, that will make us happy too.

I'm just confused by the lines "She got zing you wanna see her ding-a-ling Well lesbian it together" So is she a pre-op/non-op trans person? And does "lesbian it together" mean that the singer also identifies as female since lesbian means girls with girls? I guess, just like the other comment, it's lyrics by drug induced guys from the 70s.

To me, this gorgeous little song is written from the perspective of someone on the outside looking in; someone who feels alone in life and can't help but want what others have, even if he desires this in spite of himself.

"I walked alone..." "What do I want with all these things?" "I stood in line, I had to wait..."

This song haunts me as I can relate.
