Added artist Shovels and Rope b/c saw that they played with Hayes Carll and Jason Isbell at World Cafe Live in Philly on April 21 2011. A buncha boardies posted about them on FB. Since SM didn't have them, figured I'd help with an add here. I'm just now listening to the album they have at their myspace. myspace.com/cahearstandmichaeltrent/
They can be found as Shovels and Rope, Shovels & Rope, or Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent. They describe themselves on their myspace as follows . . .
Genre: Blues / Country / Folk Rock
Location: Johns Island, South Carolina, United States
Record Label: shrimp records
Type of Label: Indie
Album: Shovels & Rope
Genre: Country, Americana
Released: June 17, 2010
That's about all I know about them.
They're a Philly band. First heard of them via wxpn, though I've probably heard more of them via Rhapsody. They make me think Man Man, another Philly band. Something about Philly inspires a carnival atmosphere. Go figure. Must be the post-Mummers-gutter-nap stupor.
I pulled these not-too-shabby quotes off their myspace page (myspace.com/drinkupbuttercupband):
"Songwriting that distills the golden pop sounds of England and America between approximately 1964 and 1975 into a dizzying, heady brew. The arrangements are uniformly inventive, splicing together bits and pieces of everything that's been waxed since the mid-'60s with a gleefully scattershot approach. The melodies are uniformly catchy; the vocals are marked by harmonies so sweet they could give you diabetes; and James Harvey's lead vocals are always surprising, full of unexpected starts and stops, one minute sweet and folky, the next an uncontained shriek of outrageous psychedelic delight. The same juxtapositions abound in the arrangements... their penchant for rhythmic noise and oddball vocals suggests a rock suite as much as a random collection of songs." - All Music Guide
"Psychedelic without being cheesy, this band sounds like a sinister carnival." - NPR All Songs Considered
"Drink Up Buttercup, a quartet from Philadelphia that lunges joyously into every jangly chord and full-throated chorus... brought a smile to every face I could see, and the bashing on that garbage can lid couldn’t obscure some genuinely pretty and expressive harmonies." - The New York Times
"They have a spinning circus vibe and shout out loud tendency a la Arcade Fire (but in a very different, less emotionally heavy way). Musically, keys, melodica, drums, and guitars collide with three joyful voices howling. It's fun..." - Stereogum
“Lumbering drums, jangling shakers, electronic squiggles, and whimsical, ragged shouts accompany the strutting bass line and stomping guitar. It’s all just loose and playful enough to avoid coming across as overly nostalgic.” - Pitchfork
Added artist, The Splinters. Read about them on a blog somewhere, possibly Rollo & Grady. Listened to the 2010 EP, Kick, on Rhapsody. Kinda garagey, kinda folky. Decent enough to spin a couple more times, probably.
I became aware of The Len Price 3 with their 2010 release, Pictures via Rhapsody. At the moment, I'm listening to 2007's Rentacrowd. I can't tell you which I like better, the poppier 2010 release or the punkier 2007 release. They're both pretty darn good indie rock.
You can check out the band at their myspace ( myspace.com/thelenprice3 ), though it doesn't seem to include some of their better songs but you can get a decent taste there.
The band has a facebook at facebook.com/pages/The-Len-Price-3/100847641702#!/pages/The-Len-Price-3/100847641702, where you can find a couple videos and a Rhapsody page at rhapsody.com/len-price-3, where you can hear their 3 albums. They're on YouTube and have a bio written by Mark Deming at allmusic.
Glossary's 6th album is Feral Fire. Good album. One of their best, I think. It was released this year, 2010. Their official site is glossary.us and there's a buncha stuff there to entertain us. They've got videos, downloads, a myspace, a facebook and, yes, lyrics.
Accidently deleted one of my journal posts! I had a copy of it but now it's not in order. It used to fit between the Steve Wynn "Bruises" post the the post about BLK JKS.
Townes Van Zandt - Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold by artmaven at 2009-05-12 01:13:43
Hey! I just noticed that my status on SM changed to "Trusted Member."
Wooo + hoooooo !!! Very nice, tyvm.
In celebration, I submitted lyrics to
Townes Van Zandt - "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold"
How is it possible these lyrics weren't already here? If ya ask me, Townes' songs are woefully under represented on SM. Damn kids. Get off my lawn!
Delete the JoBros and go listen to Townes in all his incarnations.
