I'm coughing up a lung or two just so you know
I'm breathing well in front of you
I'm holding out a knife or two just so you know
I'm standing next to you

You can't always be down or out
But if you try you won't be found
You can't always get what you want
That's for sure

I'm sending out a note or two that says
We're all going to the same place
So it doesn't matter where you are in line
I'm holding one hand or two

Depending if we're walking or dancing
Either way I'm feeling fine.

see i draw from personal experience on this song... the first two lines reminded me of trying to get this guys attention... and then he always used to tell me "you cant get what you want" and would go into deep depression type things.... the walking or dancing thing i always took as one hand meaning friendship and two meaning something else... i know probally no one else sees it that way, but this song is one of those that just fits events in my life so perfectly its scary.

Man, this song is just absolutely wonderful. Heh... I can really relate to this song. I think he's saying that you can't always get what you want.. and god we know that's so true. And I agree with alk3girl about how he's holdin one hand or two... but either way.. no matter what the relationship is, he feels fine about it. :-) But as you can see, it got worse, before it got better.

I think this song is about someone who is always depressed or suicidal. The person doesn't seem to even try to feel better, and uses their depression as an attention or pity magnet. I think the writer is basically saying that you can't always be depressed, because sooner or later everyone will get sick of your constant whining.

I'm sending out a note or two that says we're all going to the same place, so it doesn't matter where you are in line. ---This makes me think it's either them saying not to commit suicide, which makes sense with how I've interpreted the rest, but it sounds to me more likely he's saying it's okay to kill yourself, because you're going to die either way, just sooner rather than later.

That's what I think, at least.

i love piebald, i saw them in concert and they were amazing!!! I remeber the first time i heard about them I went to a wedding in indiana 3 years ago and i listened to their "we are the only friends we have' cd over and over again.....they rock!

P.s... I would have to say that their "If It Weren't For Venetian Blinds It Would Be Curtians For Everyone" cd is the my top favorite and this one is a close second!

    My Interpretation

this song kind of embodies the way i deal with whatever problems i might have as i am not one to talk about it but i will try really hard to fix them on my own and the fact that others see signs that i have a problem ("coughing up a lung" or "holding a knife") i will never admit it until things get worse.

when things get worse, i come to the realization that i am not as alone in this as i think i am as people have asked me what is wrong but i have chosen instead to not "be found."

then, a little more, i try to communicate in a way that lets others have more details of what is going on because whether i feel embarrassed or alone that i am in a situation no one else could help with, i realize that no one is probably completely happy but we are all just trying to get there ("going to the same place") or if people are happy they can still probably help as they can remember what it was like when they where further back "in line."

finally, whether others end up giving a little help ("one hand") or a lot of help ("two hands") it will definitely better than trying to do it all by myself.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
