The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is an interesting Billy Joel song, it has a bluegrass feel to it; it is one of my favorite BJ songs, most people only know 2 or 3 songs from his Piano Man album but if you listen to it from begining to end it is a marvolous album and this song is a wonderful start. The topic of this perticular song is that of a traveler who's prayers are not for his own safety and help along his route but for his Baby.
This song is from my most-played album of all time. I doubt I would have made it through high school without Joel to drown out the sound of my father's voice coming from the bottom floor. I used to get up constantly to set the needle back on the beginning of this album. It's my favorite album of Joel's and this is my favorite track even though it's not one of his better known ones.
