The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
If you see Mary please will you help her
She seems to be looking for answers
If you see Mary please will you help her
with questions that go unanswered
Like why does she feel all dead on the inside
But as a child she remembers feeling alive
who was that man that made
my mother cry all night
was that my father who was my father
If you see Mary please will you help her
She seems to be looking for answers
If you see Mary please will you help her
with questions that go unanswered
The men that walked into her life
are no different than all the others
that promise the world and then they leave her
She says I should have known better,
I should have known better
Will she always feel so all alone
Why was there never a man in her home
and will I end up like my mother
by myself with no other
with no other
If you see Mary please will you help her
She seems to be looking for answers
If you see Mary please will you help her
with questions that go unanswered
She seems to be looking for answers
If you see Mary please will you help her
with questions that go unanswered
Like why does she feel all dead on the inside
But as a child she remembers feeling alive
who was that man that made
my mother cry all night
was that my father who was my father
If you see Mary please will you help her
She seems to be looking for answers
If you see Mary please will you help her
with questions that go unanswered
The men that walked into her life

that promise the world and then they leave her
She says I should have known better,
I should have known better
Will she always feel so all alone

and will I end up like my mother
by myself with no other
with no other
If you see Mary please will you help her

If you see Mary please will you help her

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
i think its actually about his mom
This is a great song. I think the meaning is quite deep. The song is a reminder or a posted request for guys to be very kind to their girlfriends.
This is my favorite song of the Wax Ecstatic album. Obviously the girl in this song has been through a lot of shit and is going through some rough times. The narrator cares about her and wants to help but can't maybe because of a post-relationship situation. He's just part of the confusion right now. But maybe someone else can help her...
I think it is a narrative about a girl who saw her mother mistreated by her father, who then abandoned them both. She grew up without a father figure and has messed up relationships because she doesn't know how to relate to men. She wants someone in her life, but guys just use her. Or maybe I'm just talking about me.
Sad song.
Definitely one of the best songs of all time. Possibly my new favorite.
My take on the song is it is about a girl who is depressed and has relationship problems and really needs a man in her life that will respect her and not run off or use her like the previous ones. It kinda reminds me of the girl Im trying to get with at the moment. The music video is great too.
