Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
she died long before that day I know this tortured, grieving heart of mother no longer knew her own being
and as the sun set on another, you fell through dying dreams
but could not catch them and I could not catch you.
hiding below my shadow yet dancing above my fears
I grip sorrow's edge as you crumble to fall at my soul's tears
I have not forgotten you
but sometimes I can't help feeling numb through and through
closed hands on open arms hold nothing
and as the sun set on another, you fell through dying dreams
but could not catch them and I could not catch you.
hiding below my shadow yet dancing above my fears
I grip sorrow's edge as you crumble to fall at my soul's tears
I have not forgotten you
but sometimes I can't help feeling numb through and through
closed hands on open arms hold nothing

for some reason venus and bacchus gets all the hype. i've been listening to saetia for a long time and that was the first song i ever heard by them, so it's old to me. this song on the other hand amazes me to no end. i think the slow down leading to the climactic build up during "closed hands, and open arms...hold nothing." is a really powerful part in the song. the way it progresses gets me everytime.
definitely my favorite saetia song. its so amazing.
yup, this is my favorite song by them, it deserves more love.
amazing song no doubt about it. when you let other people listen to the look on there face when the slow part stop is the best.
This song is cleary an amazing song and definately one of their best. The lyrics are so true and meaningful.
the best Saetia song out there, shows lots of emotion and meaning. I love 'I grip sorrow's edge as you crumble to fall at my soul's tears I have not forgotten you '
By far my favorite song from them. Unlike nearly all of their other lyrics, these are actually amazing. And not written about some girl that used Billy, but something much much sadder, I hate to think.....
