This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Should've stayed. Were the signs I ignored?
Can I help you not to hurt anymore?
We saw brilliance when the world was asleep.
There are things that we can have but can't keep.
If they say...
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In the sky of a million stars,
It flickers, flickers.
Who cares when someone's time runs out?
If a moment is all we are,
Or quicker, quicker.
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well I do.
The reminders pull the floor from your feet.
In the kitchen, one more chair than you need, oh.
And you're angry. And you should be. It's not fair.
Just cause you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there.
If they say...
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In the sky of a million stars,
It flickers, flickers.
Who cares when someone's time runs out?
If a moment is all we are,
Or quicker, quicker.
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well I do.
I do...
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In the sky of a million stars,

Who cares when someone's time runs out?

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Did Chester know what he was eventually going to do when he wrote this, or other songs on the new album?
This seems to show signs of hope, but ultimately it wasn't enough to keep Chester from taking his own life. Truly sad.
@carrie34 Rumors have confirmed that it was originally written for Chris Cornell<br /> who has committed suicide on may 18th <br /> Now that Chester couldn't deal with his own depression & the death of Chris<br /> It was sadly too much for him to bear<br /> After I heard the tragic news this song has gotten a much more powerful meaning<br /> R.I.P CHESTER !!!
@carrie34 <br /> "Rumors have confirmed that it was originally written for Chris Cornell<br /> who has committed suicide on may 18th"<br /> <br /> You are wrong on every level. Chris Cornell commited sui19ide on May 18, 2017. This song is the titke track of an album that was released on May 19, 2017, so that iss physically impossible to happen. Linkin Park played this on Jimmy Kimmel. The song is about suicide, depression, and missing those that arent there anymore. <br /> For those who say Chester knew when he wrote this just dont understand depression. <br /> We as a socciety need to recogniize it as the disease it is, and jjust llike cancer, you have good days and bad days and sometimes the disease wins. You dont know when that will be, or how it will manifest itself.
