“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
This song discusses of the distance the band experienced while they were on "hiatus." It's a mix of Corin and Carrie's perspectives. "Disappearing act" is straight out of Carrie's book, in this case referring to her panic attacks and sickness in their last tour before the hiatus. The last verse is also probably a partial explanation of the feelings that had brought on their hiatus.
“It seems to me the only thing that comes from fame is mediocrity” is a reason they would consider not getting back together; they are concerned that having achieved comfort in their personal lives, they would fail to make good music if they tried. Ultimately, they conclude that they were “meant to be.”
The puzzle is, “How could you steal the thing I love and keep it from me, just out of touch?” This might be referring to the fact that they all made music outside of the band; the music is what they love, but they feel that they weren't able to quite touch it in the same way. Or it could be the fact that they, in fact, remained friends, but didn't make music together for many years. Since it was Carrie’s breakdown that broke the band up, but Corin’s family life that solidified the break, it's not clear who stole what.
It is also possible that Corin (or Janet?) is obliquely calling Portlandia mediocre, and Carrie’s response is that Corin stole the music from her and she is reaching for a substitute. That is a stretch.
A shippy thought is that Carrie has flipped One More Hour on its head. “Meant to be” is Corin being close, but Carrie complains that she is still not quite within touch.
Either way, clearly a love ballad.
