First, there's this little woman
Says that she's gonna be a star, right
Says that when she moves to Hollywood
Everything's gonna be alright, Oh yeah

Next, there's this little brother
Thinks that he is ultra cool, yeah
He's got three quarters of heroin
Drops dead in nursery school, yeah (yeah)

Nexy there's his older sister
Thinks that she is an intelligent feminist
She's got all the money for college
But she lacks all the knowledge
(All the knowledge, yeah, for the college, yeah, all the knowledge, for college)

Everyone wants to be on top, oh yeah (x3)
Everyone wants to be on top, oh yeah (yeah)
On top of the world, yeah (yeah) (x2)
On top of the world, on top on top on top of the...
Everyone wants to be on top, oh yeah (wants to be be be)
Wants to be on top, oh yeah (wants to be be be)
Wants to be on top, oh yeah
Wants to be wants to be
On top of the world...

On top of the world
Where everyone is sooo high
Then the push moves up to a shove
He says, I'm not gonna take this shit no more man
I'[m gonna get my own money
My own drugs, my own house, my own whores
I'm gonna move from this town
I'm leaving

Everyone wants to be on top, oh yeah (be on top, oh yeah) (x2)
Everyone wants to be on top on top on top on top on top of the...
Everyone wants to be wants to be wants to be the one
Wants to be wants to be wants to be on top of the world
(Every every one every every one every every one every little one)
And I'm sitting on top of the world
What a mind trip mind trip
In the eyes of the world
Everyone in the world (in the world)
And I'm sitting sitting up on the world
And everyone up here is going to get high
Because that's the reality
In the eyes of the ocean (the ocean)
And we're going to get high

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
