Our sex doesn't tell us no lies

I'm gonna wear the tie, want the power to leave you
I'm aiming for full control of this love (of this love)
Touch me, touch me, don't be sweet
Love me, love me, please retweet
Let me be the girl under you that makes you cry

I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
The girl under you, guy

I'm gonna say the word
And own you (oh yeah)
You'll be my G.I.R.L
Guy, I'm romancin' love's to hold you (oh yeah)
Know you'll wear my make-up well

I'm gonna wear the tie, want the power to leave you
I'm aiming for full control of this love (of this love)
Touch me, touch me, don't be sweet
Love me, love me, please retweet
Let me be the girl under you that makes you cry

I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
The girl under you (guy)

I don't need to be on top-top to know I'm worth it
'Cause I'm strong enough to know the truth
I just want it to be hot because I'm best when I'm in love
and I'm in love with you
(Guy, G.U.Y.) touch me, touch me
Mount your goddess (guy, G.U.Y.)
Touch me, touch me
A summer moon comes into full phase (guy, G.U.Y.)
Get on top of me
And Mars' warring spirit rams into the atmosphere (guy, G.U.Y., I wanna be that)
Touch me, touch me, don't be shy
I'm in charge like a G.U.Y.
I'll lay down face up this time
Under you like a G.U.Y.

I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
The girl under you, guy

I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I'll wreck you right up, guy (G.U.Y.)
I'll lie down face up guy, (G.U.Y.) (achtzehn)
The girl under you, guy (sechzehn)

    It's about gender roles.

Gaga is the girl and would therefore be seen as submissive/weaker during sex, but instead she is claiming the male identity in the bedroom. "I'm gonna wear the tie, I want the power to leave you." Clearly, she is the dominant one.

On the other hand, her boyfriend would traditionally be viewed as the one calling the shots, being on top, more sexually aggressive, etc. However, Gaga refers to him in the song as a "G.I.R.L. = guy in romantic love" while she is the "G.U.Y. = girl under you."

Additionally, because this is a song on ARTPOP (which is all about marrying art with pop culture), Gaga blends her art with social media by mixing her love life with her public life during the chorus:

“Touch me, touch me, don't be sweet" (art, if she's role playing as Venus, Eros, or Himeros)

“Love me, love me, please retweet” (pop culture, as she directly references twitter)

So yeah, it's mainly about breaking free from gender roles but it still carries over the idea of combining art and pop that is present throughout the entire album.

I think this song is talking about a strong woman not being intimidated by a man that takes the "active" position. She's in and feels in control, even if the man is on top of her.

    It's "Greetings from Eros".

To me, the song refers to her wanting to take on the role of Eros at first--who has been interpreted as a bisexual god, not simply one-side-or-the-other--Gaga wants to shed wooden ideas and embrace her 'self' that isn't represented. I'll start off at this point because it sets the tone for the rest of the meaning to me. "I wanna be that guy." "Gee; you--why?" The comment she receives from Gaga's partner completely disregards her. The girl doesn't believe in transgender people, in transformation, is just closed-minded/superficial about it. Likely a surprise for Gaga, it shows the partner having some level of understanding, but not being willing to accept Gaga fully for the person she is. The partner plays along with what Gaga's shared, and allows Gaga to treat her as a man would, though she's still superficially oriented toward Gaga/is into experimenting, etc. Gaga still feels masculine, still thinks masculine. Maybe it was a role she played once, but Eros is seeping/seeped into her. "I’m in charge like a G.U.Y; I'll lay down face up this time, under you like a G.U.Y." The problem is, her partner's words are stuck in her head. "Gee, you--why?" and Gaga can't shake this. Attacked from the same side, Gaga realizes she's stuck in her form; her role. But subconsciously she resists, or the masculine feelings permeate through still. "I'm gonna wear the towel; the power to leave you" comes out of wanting to resist her partner who doesn't accept or understand fully. Gaga wants to do what she's wanted to but has been unable to do--maybe even what guys have done to her in the past--but because she's trapped, she realizes she wants to leave her partner, 'like a G.U.Y.' would do. She's caught between loving women and wanting them to treat her like a man in ways, but can't progress any further because she is a woman and her partners whom she looks to for understanding instead fail her. So she inadvertently understands the underhanded, lower-form of male; just as broken as the men she pushes away from. "I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.) I'll wreck you right up guy (G.U.Y.)"

If this isn't the way she intended it, it's the meaning that comes across for me. The tragedy of being transgender. Not a Tomboy--a girl who likes guys and hangs out with them, etc--but the girl who was born a girl yet feels they should have been made male, who pushes down her true feelings and ideas because she believes transformation isn't possible for her.

My interpretation of this song is that she's saying how she knows the guy she's with doesn't want her for her body and sex, he appreciates her for who she is and respects her. For example: I don’t need to be on top To know what it does, I'm strong enough to know the truth.

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about her experimenting with women, and the sexual identity she has created with another woman (or women). Society always puts constraints into lesbian sex, as to who is the guy, and who is the girl. I think by saying she wants to be your G.U.Y. (girl under you) she is playing with the idea of being the submissive one (girl), but still being dominant enough (she's strong enough to know the truth) to be a "guy".

That has been my take on the song since the first time I heard it, and based off Venus, and other songs on this album, I'd say the interpretation is at least somewhat close to her intention. It's definitely a sexual song, no doubt about that! Also one of my favorites on the album.

    My Interpretation

Did nobody realize about the gay roles references in the song? Really? I mean, look at the bridge, it's like if she's saying that she doesn't need to be the top on the lesbian relation to feel potent. It's a "third wave feminism" that talks about how a woman can be the bottom in both straight and gay relationship but she still knows that she worth it. Just because you're the submissive one doesn't mean you don't deserve some respect. Also, she renew the meaning of "guy", putting it aside as a synom of "boy" and taking it as the girl who is worth it. Greetings from a bottom. X

    Song Meaning

Not only do I think this song is about the obvious, her being just as strong as the man in the relationship and all, I also think this is some great commentary and gender and patriarchal culture. If you watch her video, you can see famous figures such as Michael Jackson, Ghandi, Jesus. She wants to be just as famous and important as these influential men were. In another scene in the video you can see them taking blood from these people and injecting them into Gaga. This is great social commentary in my opinion. Her songs and videos definitely have more layers and meaning than most think.

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about how she wants to run the relationship. She is tired of getting hurt and played with by this man. She wants to turn the tables on him so he can be the girl and get hurt. Its kind of like that ciara song about being the boy but its lady gaga version lol

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
