We come into this world unknown
But know that we are not alone
They try and knock us down
But change is coming, it's our time now

Hey everybody loses it
Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes
And hey, yeah I know what you're going through
Don't let it get the best of you, you'll make it out alive
Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together
Keep your head up, nothing lasts forever
Here's to the damned to the lost and forgotten
It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
We are all misfits living in a world on fire
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Hey, this is not a funeral
It's a revolution, after all your tears have turned to rage
Just wait, everything will be okay
Even when you're feeling like it's going down in flames

Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together
Keep your head up nothing lasts forever
Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten
It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
We are all misfits living in a world on fire
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
You've just gotta turn it up loud when the flames get higher
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

They can't do nothing to you, they can't do nothing to me
This is the life that we choose, this is the life that we bleed
So throw your fists in the air, come out, come out if you dare
Tonight we're gonna change forever

Everybody loses it,
Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes

Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together
Keep your head up nothing lasts forever
Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten
It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
We are all misfits living in a world on fire
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
You've just got to turn it up loud when the flames get higher
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
We're all misfits living in a world on fire
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh
You've just got to turn it up loud when the flames get higher
Oh woah oh oh woah oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

I never thought it was about gays, but I can see how it could apply. At first I thought it was for people who are fighting substance abuse, but then I changed my mind and thought it was about domestic violence. (After I became a victim!) I think it apply s to many topics, that is how it is written, but I think her inspiration was from domestic abuse- for victims and abusers to stick together and change things because it is a choice. She says "this is the life that we choose" I dont think gays choose to be gay, well some, but also many who are born.

    My Interpretation

I think the song is about all the people who are brave enough to challenge the social norms to bring about changes to the world.
Often times these people can feel like "misfits" because there are still so many narrow minded people in this world who will not accept any views that are different from their own. Like the video suggests, these people can often times be the victims of criticism and ostracizing. They can feel as if they are alone in their struggles. Sometimes they will hide their beliefs and their true identity in fear of what other people might say or do to them. This is a song reminding these people that they are never alone and that there are so many people who are like them in this world. "We have to stick together" and support each other along the way.

"But change is coming, It's our time now," means that it is the responsibility of the up coming generation to bring about these changes so that the future generations don't have to struggle with the same things we are going through right now.

As someone else have mentioned, I think gay rights is one of the many major social issues that Kelly Clarkson's song is implying to, but the song is not just limited to one issue. It's an empowering song for everyone who is fighting to challenge and tackle the array of problems we have in this world today.

I also think that the car and Nokia phone is colored not just for product placement, but also because technological innovations is just another facet of challenging the norms and going beyond them to bring about new improvement to this world.

I also think that this song is for everybody who has felt different from this world, and to let them know that it's okay to be different. We do not have to live in a black and white world of conformism. It is diversity in ways of thinking, perceiving, expressing, and living that makes this world a very colorful place to be.

I absolutely love this song and can't stop listening to it. Kelly Clarkson is simply amazing!

    My Interpretation

Maybe it's about people who are disabled that were born that way ("we come into this world unknown"). They suffer their disabilities in silence so the rest of the world won't know that they're suffering. Kelly tells them that they have to stick together and rise above the hatred society spews at them. She's basically saying what we've been told as children that everyone is different in some way. If we were all the same like the narrow-minded people want, the world would be boring. ("We are all misfits living in a world on fire").

    My Interpretation

I MADE AN ACCOUNT TO SPECIFICALLY TO EXPRESS MY INTERPRETATION OF THIS SONG, AND SURPRISED IM THE ONLY ONE THUS FAR. IM GOING TO START BY SAYING I FREAKING OVE THIS SONG AND THAT KELLY CLARKSON IS AMAZING, AND DID OUTSTANDING. WHICH ISNT SHOCKING. ALL OF HER SONGS ARE GREAT. THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR IS A SONG FOR COMFORT, STREGNTH, EQUALITY AND ITS EMPOWERMENT!

SO THIS SONG SPEAKS TO ME FOR 3 REASONS.

    1. IM A LESBIAN (HOUSTON, TX)
    2. IVE KNOWN 2 PEOPLE TO KILL THEMESELVES FOR BEING BULLIED AND FOR FEELING OUT OF PLACE, BECAUSE THEY ARE GAY.
    3. IM A STRONG SUPPORTER FOR RIGHTS AND EQUALITY.

I CANT BE SURE THAT THIS SONG WAS DIRECTED TO THAT GAY COMMUNITY BECAUSE KC IS OBVIOUSLY NOT GAY, BUT MAYBE SHE IS A SUPPORTER/FIGHTER FOR GAYS, IDK. I GET THIS IDEA THAT ITS ABOUT THE GAY COMMUNITY BECAUSE IN THE VIDEO, EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE IS IN BLACK AND WHITE, EXCEPT THE LITTLE GIRL. UNTIL KC REVEALS THAT SHE IS "DIFFERENT" TOO AND THAT SHE NO LONGER WAS GOING TO STAND TO LIVE IN SECRET, TO NOT BE HERSELF ETC.

SO MAYBE ITS FOR THOSE WHO HAVENT COME OUT YET BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF WHAT PEOPLE WILL SAY, DO OR ACT, OR HAVE COME OUT AND FEEL ALONE, OR HAVE BEEN OUT BUT COULDNT HANDEL FEELING AND GETTING TREATED DIFFERENT SO THEY DIE OF TORMENT AND BEING BULLIED.

We come into this world unknown But know that we are not alone They try and knock us down But change is coming, it's our time now **BASICALLY SAYING THAT WE COME INTO THIS WORLD UNKNOWNINGLY, AND HELPLESS TO THE WAY THAT WE ARE- WE CANNOT HELP BEING GAY, WE DID NOT CHOOSE THIS LIFE, WE DIDNT CHOOSE TO BE "DIFFERENT" BUT WE ARE. AND SHES SAYING THAT EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY FEEL ALONE, YOUR NOT! THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD WHO ARE JUST LIKE YOU, WHO FEEL WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH. AND THAT THE GOVERNEMNENT AND SOCIETY HAVE TRIED TO DESTROY US AND TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHTS ETC. BUT ALTHOUHGH THEY HAVE ATTEMPTED TIME AFTER TIME, BUT TO NOT GIVE UP, BECAUSE WE AR SO CLOSE TO BEING TREATED AS ONE.

Hey everybody loses it Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes And hey, yeah I know what you're going through Don't let it get the best of you, you'll make it out alive Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together Keep your head up, nothing lasts forever Here's to the damned to the lost and forgotten It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom **SHES SAYING THAT SOMETIMES, EVERYONE WANTS TO JUST THROW OUR HANDS IN THE AIR AND SURRENDER THE FIGHT, WEATHER IT BE KILLING THEMSELVES OR BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST TIRED OF DEALING, BUT THAT YOUR NOT ALONE AND TO NOT LET IT PHASE YOU, BECAUSE YOU (WEVE) GOT THIS! TO JUST STICK TOGETHER AND THAT ALL THE FIGHTING WILL BE OVER SOON. SHES ALSO SINGING TO THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THERE LIFE TO BEING BULLIED OR THOSE WHO ARE LOST AND FEEL ALONE. THAT YOU CANT WIN IF YOU QUIT.

Oh woah oh oh woah oh We are all misfits living in a world on fire Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Hey, this is not a funeral It's a revolution, after all your tears have turned to rage Just wait, everything will be okay Even when you're feeling like it's going down in flames **SHES SAYING THAT THIS IS NOT THE END, THAT WE ARE MAKING HISTORY AND THAT IF WE KEEP OUR HEADS UP AND NOT TUCK OUR TAILS BETWEN OUR LEGS, WE CAN WIN THIS! FOR THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE GAY COMMUNITY. THAT OUR TEARS AND PAIN WILL TURN INTO STRONGER DETERMINATION AND WILL FUEL OUR ENERGY TO MAKE IT KNOWN THAT WE ARE PEOPLE TO, THAT WE ARE NO DIFFERENT! TO JUST BE PATIENT. AND THAT DISPITE OUR EFFORTS, AND ALTHOUGH IT FEELS LIKE WE ARENT GETTING ANYWHERE, WE ARE!

Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together Keep your head up nothing lasts forever Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom **SELF EXPLAINITORY, THAT WE HAV ETO STICK TOGETHER AND THAT NOTHING LAST FOREVER. EVENTUALLY, THEY WILL UNDERSTAND AND GIVE US WHAT WE WANT. TO BE EQUAL. THAT WE HAVE TO FIGHT FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT, AN DIDNT MAKE IT. IN HONOR OF THEM.

Oh woah oh oh woah oh We are all misfits living in a world on fire Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us **FIGHT FOR EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, JUST LIKE YOU. BECAUSE WE STAND AS ONE!

Oh woah oh oh woah oh You've just gotta turn it up loud when the flames get higher Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us **THAT WHEN IT GETS TOUGH, OR HARD, TO GET ANGRY AND FIGHT BACK!

They can't do nothing to you, they can't do nothing to me This is the life that we choose, this is the life that we bleed So throw your fists in the air, come out, come out if you dare Tonight we're gonna change forever ** SHES SCREAMING THAT THE GOVERNEMENT AND SOCIETY CANT PHASE US, THAT THEY WILL NEVER CHANGE US, AND THAT WE ARE GOING TO STAND PROUD BECAUSE WE ARE WHO WE ARE AND WONT BACK DOWN OR COWAR, BUT WILL THROW OUR FIST IN THE AIR AND ACCEPT THE FIGHT. THAT WE WONT HIDE BUT THAT WE ARE GOING TO LIVE IN THE WORLD, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. WE ARE GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD, ONE FIGHT AT A TIME.

Everybody loses it, Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes

Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together Keep your head up nothing lasts forever Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom

Oh woah oh oh woah oh We are all misfits living in a world on fire Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh You've just got to turn it up loud when the flames get higher Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh We're all misfits living in a world on fire Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

Oh woah oh oh woah oh You've just got to turn it up loud when the flames get higher Oh woah oh oh woah oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us

This song first came on the radio, when I first heard of that song that reminds me of losing my mom three years ago. When people trying to bring me down, knock me down for what I've been through over the years. They begin to criticize, ostracize, judge, and hurt me like a boy. From a boy since I was feeling the pain, to a man to make a stand and take a chance. "People Like Us" was my personal testimony. Kelly Clarkson speaking to me like; "Hey, I know you're going through, don't let it get the best of you, you'll make it out alive." We will sing like the people like us!

This song definitely encourages bravery and strength and I feel like it's meant to give hope to people who are different from the rest of society. As somebody who is transgender, this song really spoke to me. I've always felt like an outcast or like I should feel ashamed about the way I am. So I'll be basing my interpretation of the song on my experience as a transgendered person.

"We come into this world unknown But know that we are not alone They try and knock us down But change is coming, it's our time now"

We're born the way we're born and we're helpless to change that. People might hold a strong opinion against you and may even try to attack you for who you are. The song is reminding you aren't alone in the struggle, that there are many like you facing very similar issues. It's also saying that you have the ability to make a change for the better by standing proud of yourself.

"Hey, everybody loses it Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes And hey, yeah I know what you're going through Don't let it get the best of you, you'll make it out alive"

Others' hatred can cut deep into your emotions. Sometimes so much so that it can be difficult to want to keep going forward. She's saying that you shouldn't allow their view of your differences drive you to giving up. Things will get better when you pick yourself up.

"Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together Keep your head up, nothing lasts forever Here's to the damned to the lost and forgotten It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom"

We should stick out for one another. A little kindness goes a long way. That dark place you may find yourself in will brighten up one day. The part where she sings "Here's to the damned" directly spoke to me. Coming out of the closet back in 2015 garnered some pretty interesting responses. I've been told that I'm damned to hell by my grandmother for thinking that I'm not the gender I've been born with.

"Oh, woah-oh-oh, woah-oh We are all misfits living in a world on fire Oh, woah-oh-oh, woah-oh Sing it for the people like us, the people like us"

We're people who are different in a world that expects you to fit a certain mold.

"Hey, this is not a funeral It's a revolution, after all your tears have turned to rage Just wait, everything will be okay Even when you're feeling like it's going down in flames"

Many tragedies have occurred in the face of adversity. Some people may find that they just can't fight against the hatred towards them anymore and think suicide is the only option to stop hurting. And obviously suicide is a terrible outcome; there will definitely be tears. But after you've stopped crying and questioned why this funeral had to happen at all, you'll be angered at the answer, maybe enough to stand for a cause.

"They can't do nothing to you, they can't do nothing to me This is the life that we choose, this is the life that we bleed So throw your fists in the air, come out, come out if you dare Tonight we're gonna change forever"

Once your mind is made up and you've got your feet planted firmly on the ground standing for what you believe in, nobody is going stop you. I didn't choose to be a different gender than the gender I've been born with, but I chose to accept it and let others know. I didn't allow them to stop me from being me. It's so deeply rooted into myself that it's who I am, in other words, this is the life that I bleed. I think this part of the song is encouraging us to just be ourselves, to fight for who we are (which in my opinion is ridiculous. Nobody should have to fight to be themselves.)

And yeah, that's my take on the song as a transgendered individual. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day. ^^

                                                                         ~ A Kawaii Fox

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
