The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I'm never disappointed with the music of Switchfoot, and rarely with the lyrics either. This song is great on both points, in my opinion, but I wish that Foreman would have indicated more what the "blinding light" actually is. Personally, I believe I've found that light in Jesus Christ, and my search has stopped there. I'm convinced that He is the "reason why", and "the sun that shines" in my life.

That's it - so many of Foreman's lyrics are sublime, which is why I enjoy and appreciate them.<br /> People will miss God because they're looking for the "Blinding Light", something that will be so obvious that it is impossible not to believe, or they may not believe otherwise - (Yeah, I've been waiting all my life).<br /> I think this is calling out people who may miss God looking for a "Blinding Light", and that isn't how God works. <br /> But the lyrics are very loving and respectful to men and women both in their tone. <br /> Plus the music is very catchy and fun - I am not near tired of this song after many, many listens.
