Samantha... You swore,
You'd never turned that trick before.
Keep waiting... For war,
You'll never win, you'll lose again.

I won't swing the balance in your favour...
Your defeat is my favourite flavour...

Samantha...
You wore me out.
Samantha...
You used me up.

Samantha... Your war,
Was a lost cause before I came.
Keep praying... Pray for,
The pretty things you won't get back.

Steal my soul and stab my back once more...
But you'll come from dark alleyways to score...

Once more...

Samantha...
You wore me out.
Samantha...
You burned me down.

But look in my eyes, there's nothing there.
Goodbye...
Wanted you all, with my whole life.
Goodnight...
Wanted your life...

Samantha...

Well no one can regain,
Your innocence again,
And your sins are pouring down,
Like rain...

But I love your angry pain...

Go and hit the streets again,
Cause theres nothing here for you...

Leave the money by the bed,
In the gutter where you live!
And I'll throw it all away!
Yeah, I'll throw it in your face!

And if you were on fire,
I would just throw kerosene!
And I love so much I hate!
And I hate what you have seen of me!
Samantha!

(*Echoes*
You wore me out...
Samantha...
You used me up...
*Echoes*)

You used...
Oh, don't look back,
Baby, don't look back,
Baby, don't look back to me.

Baby, don't look back,
Baby, don't look back,
Baby, don't look back at me.

And I live in this hole,
And I die in this cage,
And, oh, you hold the keys to the zoo.

And I don't wanna go,
But I can't seem to come,
And it's not up to me,
It's up to you.

And the plane is on fire,
And we're all gonna die,
And we're all going down this time.

You can lead a whore to water,
You can lead a whore to freedom,
But you can't drink away whats mine.

Samantha...

These are the album lyrics posted. Courtney's used these much harsher alternate lyrics live:

Samantha, you swore You never turned that trick before Keep waiting for a war You'll never win You'll lose again

Watch her wrap her legs around this world Can't take that gutter from the girl

Samantha You burned me out Samantha It's over now Samantha

Your war Was a lost cause before I came Keep praying Pray for The pretty things you won't get back

Watch her wrap her legs around this world Stab the gutter right out of that girl That girl

Through villages of ether My crucifixion comes Will you sing my hallelujah? Will you tell me when it's done?

Look in my eyes There's nothing there Goodbye I wanted you out of my whole life Goodnight And don't try to move

People like you fuck people like me In order to avoid agony People like you fuck people like me In order to avoid suffering

People like you fuck people like me Fuck people like you Fuck people like me Fuck people like you Fuck people like me Fuck people like you Fuck people like me

(Fuck people like you) Leave your money by the bed (Fuck people like me) (Fuck people like you) In the gutter where you live (Fuck people like me) And I throw it all away And I throw it in your face And if you were on fire I would just throw kerosene Cause I love so much I hate And I hate what you have seen in me

    Samantha

So you think that you could save him And we know that someone died Oh, an unkindness of ravens And we know that Mary lied And through villages of ether Oh, my crucifixion comes Will you sing my hallelujah? Will you tell me when it's done?

People like you fuck people like me In order to avoid agony People like you fuck people like me In order to avoid suffering

People like you fuck people like me Fuck people like you Fuck people like me Fuck people like you Fuck people like me Fuck people like you Fuck people like me Fuck people like you

About a girl that loved her Brother and Mother, a Mother that was hooked on Heroin and Cocaine that had 4 kids. The first one to be giving away, ask of the father the mother would say a mistake a sin i will pay for this one was the icon i gave away... The second not long after the first A lost soul with a family and a dad of fame in one hand and a Dad of mystery in the other??? Hooked on heroin young in life with cocaine, speed and pills with this he dies before his time. He lived a good life a fight till the end for love and understanding from a good friend. Along comes the third a girl so blond with daddy on coke and mommy spoon in hand of heroin. Born, of foul creation Born, of sour milk Coke and filth Samantha with kids of her own most of time she is in jail and working the escort papers to pay for speed. With a hunger for money Watch her wrap her legs around this world. A girl sad over her brother dying while she was in Jail So you think that you could save him And we know that someone died Oh, an unkindness of ravens And we know that Mary lied the mother of the 4 kids so many lies... So dare she speak out Samantha you swore You never turned that trick before Keep waiting for a war You'll never win You'll lose again So dare she speak out And if you were on fire I would just throw kerosene Cause I love so much I hate And I hate what you have seen in me Lets not for get the 4th a boy in jail always in jail not much to speak of... After reading the lyrics a few times I actually wondered if "Samantha" was written about Courtney's difficult relationship with Frances. It's no secret that Frances has stated on her social media stuff that her and Courtney have tough relationship, and that she has felt Kurt's mom was more of her mother due Courtney's lifestyle. In fact Frances stated in her 2015 Rolling Stone interview that after watching "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" with Courtney, that her mom actually apologized to her about her childhood. And lastly, Frances also emancipated herself from Courtney when she was 17, at which this song was written. I get the feeling some Courtney's hurt over her daughter leaving her but also angry for leaving her alone.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
