Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Baby! why are you doing this to me?
Sweetheart! are those your eyes staring straight back at me?
Angel! I see your smile everywhere!
Darling! Stop!
Night falls and I'm running in circles
I'm being chased by my imagination
Tell me I'm forgiven say you'll always be mine
Say that everything is over, tell me I'm fine...
No one deserves to live like this
(2x)
I touch your lips and stare in your eyes
You smile and it makes me fly
You are the reason my heart beats
Tonight it's just you and me...
Night as dark as my thoughts sets the scene for my return
Lightning nips at my heels as I race home
Wearily I stagger towards the song of her pale voice
Demons jeer my attempt to be free
Tell me I'm forgiven say you'll always be mine
Say that everything is over, tell me I'm fine...
No one deserves to live like this
(2x)
I touch your lips and stare in your eyes
You smile and it makes me fly
You are the reason my heart beats
Tonight it's just you and me...
Windows cast her gentle reflection
Her somber silhouette dances for me
Dear God, it's her
Look at you, you miserable fool
Get off your knees, your prayers fall upon deaf ears
Gods turned his back on you, heavens gates are shut
And now you're knocking on the devil's door
I've been expecting you for some time, sir
Allow me to introduce myself
I'm the one who pulls on all the strings, son
You're lucky I don't kill you where you stand
This can't be real
Tonight I raise my glass
There's nothing left
For I know it's time to move on
All hope has failed
My patience will not last
I've lost my soul
Tomorrow I will be gone

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
You guys who say its about Poe are neither right nor wrong. Alesana wrote the entire basis of the album in a storybook format. They had always wanted to do a true concept album and this was the product. When you buy the Cd, for those who actually still do that, it comes with two booklets, one containing lyrics, the other contains the story titled The Emptiness. The story itself is not about Poe's "Annabel Lee," more like the way Alesana themselves would have done it.
this is true, but shawn milke and dennis lee have said that they were influenced by Edgar and some other famous poets. It is noted clearly in their lyrics.
@Despize yeah, they actually did say they read it, and if you listen to the last album (in 2015 i mean) you will see that it is influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's poem, majorly. even noting, "The author lost his way again and he forgot to write the end", which means closely resembles what happened with Edgar Allen Poe's album. he usually wrote what influenced, are started his poems, with this one, he died before he could. The way he died has not actually, to this day, been properly noted. Which means it could have been any form of death. Suicide, assassination, etc.
"As the sun sets, the Artist cannot seem to escape his own imagination. Completely lost in self-indulgence, he begins to see Annabel's face everywhere. The visions of her usher his wandering, delusional thoughts back to the day when he first fell in love with her. He soon becomes obsessed with the fantasy that she could possibly still be alive. The Artist scrambles home in a hastened fury only to be stopped dead in his tracks at his front porch by a man who introduces himself as the Thespian--the man who killed Annabel." -Alesana
The central character of the story, a sketch artist known simply as "The Artist" wakes up one day to find his lover, Annabel, dead, lying next to him. Heartbroken and terrified, he buries her in his basement and flees. He wanders aimlessly until he comes to a tavern, where he hears the sounds of merriment and laughter. He decides that if he can't be happy no one can and slaughters everyone in the tavern. After wandering through many places and finding Annabel's killer, "The Thespian", at the end of the story The Artist finally comes face to face with him to fight to the death. He is stabbed in his side with a dagger and finds himself in a room with Annabel holding a dagger in hand. From here on the story's point of view switches from The Artist to Annabel where she explains that The Artist had slowly been sinking into madness all this while, as he became more and more withdrawn and his sketches more and more violent. Though she loved him, in the end she had to take his life in the attempt to defend herself from him.
first comment!(: okaay so I absolutly love this song.
I think its about a relationship between a guy and a girl, I think she's dead? and he keeps seeing her everywhere. I think he killed her andd is asking her for forgivenss. but she wants to get him back. I think that part that says "look at you, you miserable fool." is her speaking to him saying he will never be forgiven. and he can't bare it so he ends up killing himself. -pearl(:
alesana said that this chapter in the album tells about the protagonist crossing paths with the antagonist... maybe the antagonist was the one who killed the girl and the protagonist did not even have the chance to save her, so he begs for her forgiveness.. and then he met THE MURDERER ( another song in the album ). Finally he realizes that she's not coming back so he tries to forget her..?

as far as I can see, the album's concept is based on Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee, where the narrator is the protagonist/ lover, the angels were the antagonist, the ones who killed Annabel because of jealousy.

Album Tracklist:
I think its about in the story there is the Artist telling the story and a guy loved the girl Annabel and another guy killed her and now he wants revenge and this is a confrontation between them and the guy in love with Annabel is talking to the murderer in the speaking part
Really?! Do you not realize that the murderer and lover are one in the same person? If you look into the sub-text of Poe's Annabel Lee you realize that... Annabel's lover is Annabel's killer... take some time to actually read the lyrics and understand them, then it will all make sense to you... it's not a cliche love story, it's an intricate story of love and insanity
where did you find all these quotes?
he got it on the alesana interview in this link

altpress.com/features/txt_alesana.htm
thanks =]
im listening to it and i followed the words cause online biology is that boring and these lyrics are wrong...
how can these lyrics be wrong? These are the ones written on the lyrics booklet.
they arent now:) they were when i posted that.
so as i see it, hes haunted by a demon and that demon is himself.its kinda like multiple personality disorder...and he kills her.in the poem anabelle lee she dies of sickness so id ont know exactly how that relates...unless im wrong whichis quite possible.
I don't like that definition so lets try this again shall we: It's about the love of his life Annabel. He killed her and he can't stop seeing her everywhere and it's driving him insane(er). He begs her for forgiveness and she pretty much tells him to fuck off(I think by calling her a somber sillhouette they're saying she's a ghost). He murdered her because...well it says in another song. The whole album tells her story. They say it's based on Annabel Lee form an Edgar Allan Poe poem where his wife Annabel and him live by the sea and love like no one ever has before. But the angels are jealous and send a chill down so she will die of sickness. He misses her dearly and goes to her sepulchre(mausoleum)by the sea to lay beside her in her tomb.
Alright, so I was watching the video and it resembled Edgar Allen Poe and his life a lot in my opinion. He mentions the name Annabel, like "Annabel Lee", in both the song and poem she died, and he can't see to live without her. "Wearily I stagger towards the song of her pale voice | Demons jeer my attempt to be free" I think it symbolizes how Edgar Allen Poe was drinking a lot after his wife died. I think this song is about About Edgar Allen Poe and his life after his wife died. Anyone agree?
hmmmm... the story is somewhat related to that story anyway. :D
by the way, I got freaked out on the vid. it looked kind of weird, somewhat exaggerated the story, but it's still good :)) not as good as Ambrosia's IMO though
I loved the vid, but this vid tops ambrosia in my opinion. I think it executed the story to make it like, perfectly clear, but I'm glad someone agrees with me about what the song itself is about, somewhat.(:
if you read the story you find out in the end that Annabel is still alive and the artist has gone crazy
Spoiler Alert.
