This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
It's that ancient love
That you won't outgrow
It's the fee you pay
It's the debt you owe
Is that subtle way
That you throw me down
I am inches above
The dust on the ground
I await your call
I await your crown
Lets change our roads
And chase them all around
Is that subtle way
You throw me down
I am inches above
The dust on the ground
And all is quiet
All is quiet now
And all is silent
All is silent now
Now I don't hide it
I don't hide it now
It's that ancient love
That just moves along
And there's an itch so slight
Even when you're gone
Well I met you right
But I kept your wrong
And I must wait until I've found the ground that you are walking on
And all is quiet
All is quiet now
And all is silent
All is silent now
Now I don't hide it
I don't hide it now
Now I don't hide it
I don't hide it now
That you won't outgrow
It's the fee you pay
It's the debt you owe
Is that subtle way
That you throw me down
I am inches above
The dust on the ground
I await your call
I await your crown
Lets change our roads
And chase them all around
Is that subtle way
You throw me down
I am inches above
The dust on the ground
And all is quiet
All is quiet now
And all is silent
All is silent now
Now I don't hide it
I don't hide it now
It's that ancient love
That just moves along
And there's an itch so slight
Even when you're gone
Well I met you right
But I kept your wrong
And I must wait until I've found the ground that you are walking on
And all is quiet
All is quiet now
And all is silent
All is silent now
Now I don't hide it
I don't hide it now
Now I don't hide it
I don't hide it now

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I was listening to this song, and it just made me so sad, and I cried.
I feel like it's about someone that he never got over.
"It's always quiet now" Putting it that way implies that it wasn't always like this. They stopped talking. story of my life.
I don't know why it made me so sad, but it's just a really great song.
