"Oceanographer" as written by John Robert Cardwell, Philip Abram Dickey and William Lincoln Knauer....
the oceanographer
he talks to other girls
the map topographer
he's in his own world
the court stenographer
he copies everything
the news photographer
he's not listening

you're into me
you'll always be
way in too deep
he'll only be

the oceanographer
he can't really swim
yeah, it's personal
don't know where you think you fit it
the court stenographer
he don't love any more
the news photographer
he's done all this before

I capsized
serene eyes
we're in too deep
he'll only be

the oceanographer
he talks to other girls
the map topographer
he's in his own world
the court stenographer
he copies everything
the news photographer
he's not listening

General CommentIt sounds to me like the singer has feelings for a girl who's into someone else. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th verses are implying that this guy seems to hold some position of importance, or at least seems to look good on the outside, but the reality is that he's not as great as he's cracked up to be, and he'll never be able to have the same feelings for this girl as the singer does.
