In some way, shape, or form, she communicated that she didn't care as much as he did. This hurt him more than anything because it proved that she did not value their relationship as he had. She "refused to fight" for their love.<br /> Just like you said, 'what he really wants is for her to stay with him and "fight" through the battles and obstacles of the relationship - to make it work no matter how hard it might be'.<br /> <br /> <br /> This interpretation leads to a twist in translation for the next line as well.<br /> "So save your breath, I will not hear. I think It made it very clear."<br /> I didn't know what to think of this line until I read a little further: "You sold me out to save yourself, And I won't listen to your shame, You ran away - you're all the same"<br /> That suggests that maybe things were getting to hard in their relationship - as could be imagined if one partner is coming to the relationship that their love is not enough to keep the relationship healthy - and she got scared. As discussed already, she more or less just left and didn't put up much of a fight. Now she's trying to either justify herself to him or just smooth things over. Either way, he's had enough now that he's seen her true colors, and she can just save her breath.

"Bury all your secrets in my skin<br /> Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins"<br /> I think this line could also mean that she looks like the innocent one in the end, and he's the one left looking wrong bad, left with the sins because she "came away with innocence." He knows she's not all great because he knows her secrets, but that's not quite how it looks to everyone else. <br /> <br /> "So if you love me, let me go. And run away before I know.<br /> My heart is just too dark to care. I can't destroy what isn't there."<br /> I think he is conflicted between love and hate for her. That could explain the constant repetition of "love" and "hate" in the lyrics. He wants her to leave him for both his and her own good. But he doesn't want to be there when she runs away. "...run away before I know." The hate within him is telling him that he doesn't care, while he obviously does care because he doesn't want to "destroy" her. <br /> <br /> "I only wish you weren't my friend. Then I could hurt you in the end." <br /> I think this line is saying that because he cares for her, he can't hurt her. Even though he wants to hurt her, so she will hate him and leave him, he doesn't, because he cares for her.<br /> <br /> "It took the Death of Hope to let you go"<br /> I think he is saying here that he lost hope in his life, so because he lost hope, he could actually go through with trying to leave her. <br /> <br /> "If you still care dont ever let me know."<br /> He doesn't want to change his mind. He wants to remember her- only the good. "I still press your letters to my lips and cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss." But he doesn't want her to care because he doesn't want either of them to get hurt. He also doesn't want to know if she cares because he doesn't want it to inspire thoughts of her, which would make him feel love for her again- which would bring him rage. "And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again"<br /> <br /> "Deliver me into my Fate - If I'm alone I cannot hate<br /> I don't deserve to have you<br /> My smile was taken long ago / If I can change I hope I never know"<br /> He is obviously punishing himself for his misdoings. He believes that because of things he has done, although he cares for her, it is his fate to be alone. He doesn't want his smile to return because he doesn't feel he deserves it. He is punishing himself by purging his life of all hopes at happiness.

I completely agree with your opinion about love/hate; they are intense emotions but are what bonds two people. I think it is indifference toward his significant other that he is talking about...at one point there was hope that their relationship would eventually work out, but once that hope was extinguished, he "can't destroy what isn't there" (love/hate). He wishes he could at least hate her so that he could walk away and not care the pain it would cause. However, like a platonic friend, he doesn't want to hurt her...not that seeing her suffer would affect him, just out of human decency.<br /> <br /> I get the feeling that through the course of the relationship she was actually the one who was indifferent and never truly cared for him and now that the roles are reversed, she is the "angel" who is granted the ability to twist the past to fit her current stanse...she get's to "sell him out." Geez there are so many hidden meanings in this song it would take forever to cover it all, but I agree a lot with DreamersDisease. <br /> <br /> About the death of hope and love and the wish that the other walks away because you are tired of being the bad guy.
