The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
We're uneasy, two tigers in a cage,
We're pacing on our pads, in waiting,
For the time to come in reverie.
Our lazy bones ache for our dowry.
You can't hold on to the thrill.
So I hope you find your will to follow through.
What we invented, I am now ending.
Hold on to who you love.
We are dry and blown like dust since we were young.
What we invented, I am now ending.
The closest thing we had to royalty,
A chance to break our parents' patterns.
We chose to keep our teenage tragedy,
In lieu of a romantic palace.
Play tender like a new born baby would.
Play tender 'til the night is over.
I'm leaving you to nurture cherished wounds,
And care for it just like your lover, yeah.
You can't hold on to the thrill.
So I hope you find your will to follow through.
What we invented, I am now ending.
Hold on to who you love.
We are dry and blown like dust since we were young.
What we invented, I am now ending.
Can't hold on to the thrill.
So I hope you find your will to follow through.
What we invented, I am now ending.
Hold on to who you love.
We are dry and blown like dust since we were young.
The morning's over, the day is in full swing.
I know you're busy,
But please won't you come visit me?
You are an aimless ghost,
You haunt you bag of bones.
The wolf messed with your vision.
He is sitting in your kitchen,
While you sleep tonight.
You will eat your young,
And you will act surprised.
You can't hold on to the thrill.
So I hope you find your will to follow through.
What we invented, I am now ending.
Hold on to who you love.
We are dry and blown like dust since we were young.
What we invented, I am now ending.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

"Reverie" is most definitely a word...a word with very strong Latin and Christian roots-the Chrisitan connotations being the main point of importance. The entire concept of the last album was Jesse's struggle with his faith, and considering that this song was initially meant to be one of the more emotionally touching tracks on the album, one can assume that it's heavily laden with Christian concepts. Reverie describes a feeling of awe brought about by righteousness and holyness. In essence, that entire verse is talking about the wait for Christ's second coming:
We'll take it easy, tigers in the cage, Pacing on our pads, and waiting, For the time to come in reverie. Our lazy bones ache for our dowry.
Basically, it's saying that the "tigers in the cage" (people stuck in the sorrow of this realm of reality) need to just be patient and wait for the coming of Christ (the time to come in reverie) and then their souls will be wed to the one that they were promised to (Christ is obviously the one to whom the souls of Chrisitans belong, and while wed probabaly isn't the best word here, it is the proper context because of the reference to dowry).
Oh, and luckykr3w... It's not "royalty" it's... The closest thing we had to loyalty.
Actually, it is "royalty," it coincides with the lyric a few lines later, "In lieu of their romantic palace." (i know, i know, a lot of people think it's "palette" but i assure you that it's palace, get some really good quality speakers and listen close)

Rated 0
""We'll take it easy, tigers in a cage We're pacing on our pads, and waiting For the time to come in reverie Our lazy bones ache for our dowry"" this whole phrase is talking about the second coming of christ as someone stated earlier it makes the most sense out of anything i have heard.

""You can't hold on to the thrill So I hope you find your will to follow through What we invented, I am now ending Hold on to who you love We are dry and blown like dust since we were young What we invented, I am now ending"" Hes basically saying you cant hold on to anything forever in life it will pass so hes hoping everyone will have the will to follow through and believe in christ jesus. When he says what we invented i am now ending hes saying watever comfort hes created for himself on this earth he is now ending it to follow god. Then he says hold on to who you love we are dry and blown like dust since we were young. In other words hes saying help the ones you love stay with Jesus because were all being blown away from him since the day we were born.

""The closest thing we had to royalty A chance to break our parents' pattern We chose to keep our teenage tragedy In lieu of their romantic palette Play tender like a newborn baby would Play tender 'til the night is over I'm leaving you to nurture cherished wounds And care for it just like your lover, yeah"" In this line he changes the subject to a girl he loved assuming its the girl who cheated on him with TBS singer. He saying the only thing they had was a chance to break all there parents patters of losing the ones they loved and staying with them forever but they chose to not get over what happened wen they were younger. and then to avoid this line of mistakes he decides to stay tender and peacfull and forget everything be mindless maby by taking drugs drinking ect. Then he says play tender till the night is over hes saying keep himself in this mindless state till night is over and he has peace. then he says im leaving you to nurture cherished wounds. Hes saying hes doing this cuz he wants to get her out of his head completely and he will care to his wounds just like his ex lover cared for hers.

""I know you're busy, but please won't you come visit me? You are an aimless ghost, you haunt your bag of bones The wolf messed with your vision, he is sitting in your kitchen while you sleep tonight He will eat your young and you will act surprised"" In this ending line hes pointing out how she needs to turn to christ and raise her kids in the lord or theyll get pulled away too. basically when he says I know your busy but please come visit me hes saying even though shes busy she should take the time to listen to what he has to say. then he says you are an aimless ghost you haunt your bag of bones. in other words the way she is living now has no meaning at all and by saying you haunt your bag of bones hes saying bag of bones "when she dies" shes just haunting it by pulling away from god either by longer purgatory or just straightup hell either one which Jesse believes in.Then finally the llast part ""The wolf messed with your vision"" first off the wolf is referring to the devil the devil was mentioned in the bible as a wolf who is crafty and decieving, so the devil messed with her whole vision on life and how to go through it then ""he is sitting in your kitchen while you sleep tonight He will eat your young and you will act surprised"" this is basically saying you've know aloud satin into your houshold and when your guard is down hes gonna go after your children and ruin there perspective on life like he did to her and she will know why her kids ended up like this but is still gonna be surprised knowing that jesse was right.

This is the true perspective of the song it really does make since seeing as how there last cd was about Jesse faith right her hes pronouncing he believes in God. Hope this helps some people who may have questions.
To "lay down the fork and knife" means to give up, or quit trying. It is sometimes used when talking about death, used much in the same way as terms such as, "kick the bucket."
But as much as I like the "laying down the fork and knife" theory, I'm pretty sure takeiteasytigers is right, it's the name of a restaurant on Long Island.
Hell, maybe he means both. I wouldn't put it past the greatest lyricist of our time.
To me, this song is about two people who have a very exciting relationship, because it's new. After a while, the 'thrill' wears off, and they have to decide whether they actually love each other... if they've been in the relationship for the feeling, or because they really do love one another.
actually, thedefinition of reverie is "lost in thought" or "to daydream"
Yes.
That is what I was about to say.
i agree with xstickxorex...it is most defenitly ROYALTY...theres no way thats an 'L' sound... anyway...this is just my interpretation: "We'll take it easy, tigers in the cage, Pacing on our pads, and waiting, For the town to come in revelry Our lazy bones ache for our dowry." revelry is sort of like partying...or "merrymaking"...and if the 'town' were to come in revelry...well...that makes sense. everyone else having the time of their lives while the 'tigers' are locked up waiting for their time to be let loose and join in on the fun! i dk thats just what i think...but it could be just as much right as it is wrong
I agree. This song, at least the bridge, seems to me like the girl the guy loved went for another guy who was only using her, and she knew it but refused to see it.
It's most definately "nurse your" not "nurture". I don't really care, they both mean the same thing, but if you listen closely. mmm, I just love listening to this song so much. Beautiful
mildeto...what use is a fork without a knife or a knife without a fork? sometimes u can use them on your own...but not really...they were invented to be used together.
they're probably in parenthesis because it probably doesn't have any literal correlation to the song...
perfectly explained.

while this song might have christian references, to me it seems like he's talking about what was a perfect match being thrown away.

after all, TDAG was all about his relationship falling apart after his engagement.
"And you will act surprised. " This line he sings just gives this whole song a whole new demension; i just love it.
Good connection with the title. I can't believe I didn't realize that. I also think it might just be a reference to how easy it is for this wolf character to get what he wants out of the other person the song is talking about. The title was revealed on a setlist when they played the show live, and that version did include the added bridge, so it doesn't surprise me at all.
Maybe I'm reading too much into the song, but it puzzles me as to why the lyrics are "He will eat your young and you will ACT surprised," rather than, "...you will BE surprised." Is there a significance to him saying act - maybe he is insinuating that the person already knew their young would be eaten, rather than be surprised that they were. I hope that made sense. Any thoughts?
