Make you up, take you out
Play it up to bring you down
Take the time to make this last

Spin the wheel, watch it crash
Turn the dress to broken glass
Strike a pose and hold the flash

I'm not the only one who's bleeding
Before the past is done repeating
Gets underneath my skin, it won't die
This time if I can't win

Then I won't try to carry on
I'll play it satirical
Tonight won't be so long
I'll pray for a miracle

Wake you up, pull you out
Talk you up to calm you down
Turn it up and scream and shout

Make you tired, wear you out
Shut you up and turn you off
Clean you up and take you home

I'm not the only one who's bleeding
Before the past is done repeating
Gets underneath my skin, it won't die
This time if I can't win

Then I won't try to carry on
I'll play it satirical
Tonight won't be so long
I'll pray for a miracle

I think this song is about self image issues. I've heard this kind of thing is genetic, so that could be why this song is titled "Science."

The girl has her highs and lows. When she feels good about herself, her self esteem is so high that she wants to go out and experience life ("make you up, take you out"). However, when she feels bad about her appearance, she really suffers ("spin the wheel, watch it crash"). Her dress has transformed into rags, she's not the fairest one of all ("turn the dress to broken glass"). Because her feelings are up and down so often, she really savors the moments when she is confident and tries to reaffirm herself by examining her face for long periods of time or taking pictures ("take the time to make this last ... strike a pose and hold the flash"). Once again, genetics. She tries to convince herself that this is all "science" and she shouldn't be feeling this way ("I'm not the only one who's bleeding before the past is done repeating"). These frequent thoughts of her looks have even caused her to consider suicide or self harming ("gets underneath my skin, it won't die, this time if I can't win then I won't try to carry on"). She doesn't do it, but she does spend a long time being depressed but eventually she feels good about herself again, only to repeat the process ("tonight won't be so long, I'll pray for a miracle"). In the morning she wakes up feeling a bit better. She pulls herself out of bed and takes a look at herself in the mirror and forces herself to accept what she sees ("wake you up, pull you out, talk you up to calm you down"). But eventually, she's feeling bad about herself again ("turn it up to scream and shout").

... That's pretty much the gist of my thoughts. Phew.

I believe this is about a relationship that is falling apart. Both are aware, and know that the other is miserable as well, but they can't let go. Even though one starts most of the fighting, he or she feels that the other person is causing a lot of the problems/pain as well (though not in such a manipulative way). There are hopes that one or the other person will end the relationship (hence the miracle).

Are there any songs of theirs that see relationships/romance in a positive light?? I love their music and without looking too much into the lyrics i can get really into a song, but the meaning behind some songs is frustrating when i realise it's about a failing relationship, not about an awesome connection had with someone.. their songs have such a positive uplifting feel, if only some of the lyrics did as well.

I get the feeling the song is about someone making mistakes all the time and not learning from them. Ruining all the good things in life by repeatedly screwing them up. The inability to cope with the mistakes the person has made leads him/her to depression over the memories.

The frustration goes on to the point where if it happens once more, the person will end their life. Unless a miracle happens and they finally get it right.

To me it sounds like, your making yourself up to looking nice for someone but they don't pay attention to you. They'll about to give up, and leave. They finally get there attention though after attempting to kill themself. And they'll trying to talk them out of trying again. But he/she doesn't want to live if that person they love doesn't return there feelings. They've been lonely and they had a chance at love, but the other person isn't showing any affection. But the other person also has problems of there own and think that they'd only just hurt them. So they both want to see each other but don't think there good enough.

    That's what I think... I'm probably wrong.

I'm not entirely sure of the meaning, but it reminds me a lot of how writers like me treat our characters when we're making our stories...

i think this song is about someone who can't seem to stop playing around with their partners feelings. theu just kinda pull at all the strings for fun, and then it becomes an addiction.

and then they wish they didn't feel like they had to anymore, and possible want to change.

    Song Meaning

I think this song is about a girl who is addicted to drugs, and is trying to find a way out. " Play it up to bring you down", to me, is talking about the high, only to bring you back down again too soon for her. " Im not the only one bleeding before the past is done repeating" is her in rehad and shes still using, but shes wants to quit, but shes starting to loose faith in herself, " This time if I cant win then I wont carry on."

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
