let's pretend that we can still pretend
let's pretend that we are young again
i am only looking for a friend
let's pretend that we are young again

i drink for all the secrets that you seek
i drink for all the memories you keep
i drink for all the dreams you'll never dream
i drink for all the planets in between

believe me when i say i love you dear
believe me when i tell you not to fear
that autumn morning everything was clear
believe me when i tell you not to fear

a dollar for the country that i knew
a dollar for an afternoon with you
i know i've seen my best days, you've seen them too
a dollar for the country that i knew

Quite obvious from the title, but it's just reminiscing after someone's died.

He remembers how things used to be when they were young and together and he feels a desperate desire to go back. Then he moves to despair at thinking about all the things the dead person will never do. He doesn't want them to be afraid, but at the same time he's afraid himself because this person is gone and so his "best days" are over.

The idea of "the country that I knew" as being before 9/11 is interesting and puts the whole song on a greater scale. Personally I prefer to think of it as being simply one person thinking about a friend who's died. I just see it as his wish that things were different - he'd pay to go back. To him it seems like the entire country's changed because the world feels so different without this one person in it.

I just thought about 9/11 cause I think you can hear a plane in the song in the part between "believe me when i tell you not to fear".... and ... "a dollar for the country that i knew"?! Right or wrong?

    My Interpretation

I believe (and this is just a personal interpretation from watching too many romance movies) that this person is talking towards a person that he loved that had died tragically and was not defended by our country's justice sytem (a dollar for the country that I knew) Since the words "that autumn morning everything was clear" stand out as not at all like the others in that stanza, I think they carry a deeper meaning for the songwriter than any others. This makes me think (again, based on an overdose of romance) that the artist planned to propose to the person the morning that she died... yeah this is probably very wrong, but I think this might be it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
